Thin (50-500 nm) films of TiO2 may be deposited on glass substrates by the atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) reaction of TiCl4 with ethyl acetate at 400600 C. The TiO2 films are exclusively in the form of anatase, as established by Raman microscopy and glancing angle X-ray diffraction. Phenotypic studies of mice lacking metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 7 (mGluR7) suggest that antagonists of this receptor may be promising for the treatment of central nervous system disorders such as anxiety and depression. Suzuki et al. (J Pharmacol Exp Ther 323: 147-156, 2007) recently reported the in vitro characterization of a novel mGluR7 antagonist called 6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-methyl-3-(4-pyridinyl)-isoxazolo[4,5-c]pyridin-4(5H)-one (MMPIP), which noncompetitively inhibited the activity of orthosteric and allosteric agonists at mGluR7. We describe that MMPIP acts as a noncompetitive antagonist in calcium mobilization assays in cells coexpressing mGluR7 and the promiscuous G protein G alpha(15). Assessment of the activity of a small library of MMPIP-derived compounds using this assay reveals that, despite similar potencies, compounds exhibit differences in negative co-operativity for agonist-mediated calcium mobilization. Examination of the inhibitory activity of MMPIP and analogs using endogenous G(i/o)-coupled assay readouts indicates that the pharmacology of these ligands seems to be context-dependent, and MMPIP exhibits differences in negative cooperativity in certain cellular backgrounds. Electrophysiological studies reveal that, in contrast to the orthosteric antagonist (2S)-2-amino-2-[(1S,2S)-2-carboxyclycloprop-1-yl]-3-(xanth-9-yl) propanoic acid (LY341495), MMPIP is unable to block agonist-mediated responses at the Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapse, a location at which neurotransmission has been shown to be modulated by mGluR7 activity. Thus, MMPIP and related compounds differentially inhibit coupling of mGluR7 in different cellular backgrounds and may not antagonize the coupling of this receptor to native G(i/o) signaling pathways in all cellular contexts. The pharmacology of this compound represents a striking example of the potential for context-dependent blockade of receptor responses by negative allosteric modulators.

Photoresonant excitation has been examined as a mechanism for enhancing the maximum gain achievable on a H-like recombination scheme. Modelling of the system, using the MED101/NIMP package, has shown that the photoresonant excitation of the 1s-3p (Ly(beta)) transition at 12.644 angstrom in a H-like fluorine plasma by a Be-like manganese transition at 12.643 angstrom offers the possibility of considerable gain enhancement on the 3d-2p Balmer alpha at 80.91 angstrom over the simple H-like system. Some experimental evidence for a transitory increase in intensity on the Balmer-alpha has been obtained for a fluorine-coated C-fiber system pumped by irradiating a manganese stripe in close proximity to the fiber.

The gain coefficient of the strongest 3p --> 3s, J = 2 --> 1 lasing transition at 23.6 nm in the Ne-like Ge collisional excitation scheme has been measured, using the fundamental wavelength from a Nd:glass laser (1.06-mu-m), for a range of incident intensities on massive stripe targets up to 2.2 cm in length. From a threshold incident laser intensity of approximately 6 x 10(12) W/cm2, the gain coefficient rises to approximately 4.5 cm-1 for an irradiation intensity of approximately 2.5 x 10(13) W/cm2, tending towards still higher gain coefficients at higher incident intensities. For targets of maximum length, a gain-length product gL almost-equal-to 10 was reached with a resultant output power at 23.6 nm estimated to be at the approximately kW level. The beam divergence decreased with length to a minimum of approximately 7 mrad but no significant trend in beam pointing with plasma length was observed. From the trend in the gain coefficient, it appears that for a fixed energy laser irradiating a approximately 100-mu-m wide slab targets, an incident intensity of I(i) approximately 1.2 x 10(13) W/cm2 represents an optimum working level, assuming that plasma length is not limited by refractive effects. In addition to the usual valence electron excited 3p --> 3s transitions, the gain coefficient for the core excited 1s(2)2s2p(6)3d --> 1s(2)2s2p(6)3p transition at 19.9 nm has been measured to be approximately 1.5 cm-1 for an incident irradiance of approximately 2.5 x 10(13) W/cm2.

Dielectronic recombination was investigated for He+, the simplest ion for which this process is possible. This work was done using the light-ion storage ring and electron cooler at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility. Resonant recombination yields resulting from 1s +e- --> nln'l' transitions were observed with sufficient resolution (about 1 eV in the center of mass) to isolate and obtain cross sections for the 2s 2p 3P0 and 2p2 1D terms. The measured cross sections, integrated over the DELTAn = 1 2ln'l' states, agree in magnitude with theoretical calculations. Additionally, DELTAn = 2 dielectronic recombination events associated with 3ln'l' intermediate states were observed.

Absolute doubly differential cross sections have been measured as a function of electron energy and angle of observation for electron emission in collisions of 3.5-MeV/u Fe17+ and Fe22+ ions with He and Ar gas targets under single-collision conditions. The measured electron emission cross sections are compared to theoretical and scaled cross sections based on the Born approximation. The results using intermediate-mass ions are discussed with reference to previously reported cross sections from collisions with highly charged lighter- and heavier-ion species at MeV/u projectile energies. Resonant transfer and excitation (RTE) is investigated for Fe(q+) ions (q=23, 24, and 25) colliding with H2. For each charge state, cross sections for RTE were obtained from measurements of K x rays, emitted from the doubly excited intermediate state, coincident with single-electron capture by the incident ion. Additionally, for Fe25+ cross sections were obtained from measurements of coincidences between the two K x rays emitted from the intermediate state. These latter measurements Provide information on the lifetimes of intermediate metastable states formed in the RTE process. In all cases, measured cross sections are in good agreement with calculations based on theoretical cross sections for dielectronic recombination (DR). Since RTE closely approximates DR, the results indicate that dielectronic-recombination cross sections involving K-shell excitation can be accurately predicted for highly charged iron ions. The results for Fe25+ show that metastable states are sufficiently short lived to be observable in the RTE (or DR) process for these hydrogenlike ions.
