Light emitted from metal/oxide/metal tunnel junctions can originate from the slow-mode surface plasmon polariton supported in the oxide interface region. The effective radiative decay of this mode is constrained by competition with heavy intrinsic damping and by the need to scatter from very small scale surface roughness; the latter requirement arises from the mode's low phase velocity and the usual momentum conservation condition in the scattering process. Computational analysis of conventional devices shows that the desirable goals of decreased intrinsic damping and increased phase velocity are influenced, in order of priority, by the thickness and dielectric function of the oxide layer, the type of metal chosen for each conducting electrode, and temperature. Realizable devices supporting an optimized slow-mode plasmon polariton are suggested. Essentially these consist of thin metal electrodes separated by a dielectric layer which acts as a very thin (a few nm) electron tunneling barrier but a relatively thick (several 10's of nm) optically lossless region. A new type of active frequency selective surface (AFSS) is proposed to realise a voltage controlled bi-state (transparent and reflecting) response at the specified frequencies. The bi-state switching is achieved by combining a passive array of interleaved spiral slots in conducting screens and active dipole arrays with integrated pin diodes at the opposite sides of a thin dielectric substrate. Simulation results show that such active surfaces have high isolation between the transparency and reflection states, while retaining the merits of substantially sub-wavelength response of the unit cell and large fractional bandwidths (FBWs) inherent to the original passive interwoven spiral arrays. Potential applications include reconfigurable and controllable electromagnetic architecture of buildings.

A high impedance metasurface (HIMS) composed of the arrays of intertwined planar spirals on thin (~0.1λ) ferrite-dielectric substrate is proposed. The HIMS exhibits fractional bandwidth in excess of 10% and excellent angular and polarisation stability of the circular polarised waves at oblique incidence.

This paper examines instances of recent musical and artistic works and asks to what extent it makes sense to regard certain practices and technologies as gendered. It looks at a number of strategies for making, suggesting that male gender stereotypes are as prevalent and unhelpful (to practitioners) as female ones. It looks at aspects of the working environments of practitioners to determine whether changes in such conditions might alleviate the gender mismatch in enrolment in higher education courses featuring ubiquitous technologies. The paper identifies historical precedents for technology gendering in which readings of such gendering have shifted radically, suggesting they offer scope for optimism in our longer-term reading of the gendered-ness of current practices. The paper also touches on the extent to which a ‘research’ ethos––the foregrounding of the essential human attributes of inquisitiveness and empathy––may contribute to our capacity to tell better, less binary stories of otherness in all its forms.

Epitaxial BaTiO3 films and epitaxial BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers were grown by pulsed laser deposition on vicinal surfaces of (001)-oriented Nb-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Nb) single-crystal substrates. Atomic force microscopy was used to investigate the surface topography of the deposited films. The morphology of the films, of the BaTiO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, and of the column boundaries was investigated by cross-sectional high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Measurements of the dielectric properties were performed by comparing BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers of different numbers of individual layers, but equal overall thickness. The dielectric loss saturates for a thickness above 300 nm and linearly decreases with decreasing film thickness below a thickness of 75 nm. At the same thickness of 75 nm, the thickness dependence of the dielectric constant also exhibits a change in the linear slope both for BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers. This behaviour is explained by the change observed in the grain morphology at a thickness of 75 nm. For the thickness dependence of the dielectric constant, two phenomenological models are considered, viz. a 'series-capacitor' model and a 'dead-layer' model.

Epitaxial BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers were grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on (001)-oriented Nb-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:Nb) substrates. Measurements of the dielectric properties were performed comparing BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers of different number of individual layers, but equal overall thickness. The dielectric loss saturates for a thickness above 300 nm, and linearly decreases with decreasing film thickness below a thickness of 75 nm, and it is independent on the number of multilayers, pointing to some interface effect. The thickness dependence of the dielectric constant of BaTiO3 films and BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers; exhibits a change in the linear slope at a thickness of 75 nm. This behavior is explained by the change observed in the morphology at a thickness of 75 nm. In order to explain the thickness dependence of the dielectric constant, two approaches are considered in this paper, viz. a "series capacitor" model and a "dead layer" model.

This chapter introduces the concept of intersectionality in its relevance for anti-discrimination law. It illustrates the use (or non-use) of this concept by the Court of Justice, and provides examples of case law ignoring intersectional inequalities. Finally, it proposes to re-frame and re-focus EU anti-discrimination law around nodes of inequalities as a way to better address intersectional inequalities.

Doubly periodic arrays of strip conductors printed on a composite ferrite-dielectric substrate have been investigated at oblique incidence of linear polarized plane waves. The simulation results revealed strong non-reciprocity of wave reflectance and transmittance at positive and negative angles of incidence. It is also shown that the non-reciprocity is further enhanced by the strip conductor pattern.

The paper reports on the mm-wave characterization of a low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrate. A substrate integrated resonator (SIW) method is presented for robust extraction of both permittivity and loss tangent of the substrate. The data obtained allow full characterization of the substrate in the 71 GHz – 95 GHz frequency range suitable for accurate modelling of E-and W-band printed circuits.

The paper is a reflection on the use of photographs in multiple case study research. It explores the crossovers between interpreting visual artefacts, the qualitative approach to case study research in organisations, and the move from cases to theory guided by the grounded theory tenets. The paper proposes an additional use of photographs as a visual method to those in the literature, as a device for data analysis. Photograph-based analysis techniques are explored, using e sequence of individual images and photo collages on case data, moving from interpretation of single to multiple case themes. This makes the case of using photograph analysis as an interpretation device for case research to illuminate theory development.
