Aims: To investigate the ability of ischaemic preconditioning (IPC) to protect guinea-pig detrusor from damage caused by a subsequent more prolonged exposure to ischaemic conditions.

Materials and Methods: Smooth muscle strips were mounted for tension recording in small organ baths continuously superfused with Krebs' solution at 37 degrees C. Ischaemia was mimicked by removing oxygen and glucose from the superfusing solution. Contractile responses to electrical field stimulation (EFS) and carbachol were monitored. Three regimes of preconditioning were examined: 15, 10, and 5 min of ischaemic conditions followed by 15, 10, and 5 min of normal conditions, respectively.

Results: Without preconditioning, nerve-mediated responses were significantly and proportionally reduced by periods of ischaemic conditions lasting for 45, 60, and 90 min, but recovered fully after exposure to ischaemic conditions for 30 min. The recovery of the responses to EFS was significantly improved in preconditioned strips when the period of ischaemic conditions was 45 or 60 min. However, no significant differences were seen with preconditioning when the period of ischaemic conditions was 90 min. The recovery of responses to carbachol was much greater than for the responses to EFS, and no significant differences were found between control and preconditioned strips.

Conclusions: It is suggested that in vivo short periods of transient ischaemia may be able to protect the guinea-pig bladder from the impairment associated with longer periods of ischaemia and reperfusion, which might happen in obstructed micturition. Our results also indicate that the phenomenon affects mainly the intrinsic nerves, which are more susceptible to ischaemic damage than the smooth muscle.

For the first time, the development of paw preferences in the domestic cat, Felis silvestris catus, is explored. Twelve cats were tested at ages 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year on a challenge requiring them to use one of their paws to retrieve food. To control for repeated testing of the same cats at different ages, the subjects' paw preferences were compared with those of cats tested just once, at 6 months (n = 11) or 1 year (n = 14) of age. Analysis revealed a significant effect of age on the distribution of cats' paw preferences. Cats were significantly more likely to be ambilateral than paw preferent at 12 weeks and at 6 months but more likely to display a lateral bias in paw use at 1 year. There was a significant positive correlation between cats' paw preferences at 6 months and at 1 year. Lateralized behavior was strongly sex related. Females had a greater preference for using their right paw; males were significantly more inclined to adopt their left. Analysis revealed no significant difference in the direction or strength of paw preferences of cats tested longitudinally or cross-sectionally at 6 months or 1 year of age. Findings indicate that cats develop paw preferences by 1 year and hint at a relative stability in preferred paw use over time. The strong sex effect observed strengthens the case for the influence of a biological mechanism in the emergence of motor asymmetry in cats.

Inhaled recombinant Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibitor (rSLPI) has shown potential for treatment of inflammatory lung conditions. Rapid inactivation of rSLPI by cathepsin L (Cat L) and rapid clearance from the lungs have limited clinical efficacy. Encapsulation of rSLPI within 1,2-Dioleoyl-sn-Glycero-3-[Phospho-L-Serine]:Cholesterol liposomes (DOPS-rSLPI) protects rSLPI against Cat L inactivation in vitro. We aimed to determine the effect of liposomes on rSLPI pharmacokinetics and activity in vitro and after local delivery to the airways in vivo.

The films of Wes Anderson feature a peculiar attention to the representation of dwellings in relation to narrative development, filmic style and characters' identities. As is true of clothing, in Anderson's cinema homes with their architecture, furniture and objects strongly contribute to a nostalgic dislocation of the characters from contemporary time. Considering the house as the prime locus of identity and the core of the patriarchal family, the family home is often depicted by Anderson as the last physical trace left by the absent father; a utopian place that the characters aim to rebuild or to recall through its objectification. This paper aims to analyse the (re)construction of the family home in The Royal Tenenbaums, and will investigate its absence and surrogates in The Darjeeling Ltd.

On 21 July 2011 the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights issued its much awaited decision in the case of Jessica Lenahan (Gonzales) v United States. In a landmark decision the Commission found the United States of America to be in violation of the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man 1948 due to the failure of the state to protect a victim of domestic violence and her children. This paper analyses the Lenahan decision and its significance for the United States. In particular, the substantial influence of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights on the Commission’s reasoning is examined.

The production of stable homogeneous reference materials containing the antimicrobial agent sulphadimidine in pig tissue is described. These were commissioned by the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR), established by the Commission of the European Communities, to promote improvements in analytical accuracy and to ensure uniformity of results determined by member states. Sulphadimidine-containing tissue powders (400 vials each of muscle, liver and kidney) were prepared by orally dosing pigs with drug, producing lyophilized tissue powders and blending these with negative tissues from unmedicated animals to achieve target concentrations. Details of the production process, the stabilizing procedure developed and the analytical assessments of homogeneity and stability are given.
