We demonstrate a combined magneto-optical trap and imaging system that is suitable for the investigation of cold atoms near surfaces. In particular, we are able to trap atoms close to optically scattering surfaces and to image them with an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. We also demonstrate a simple magneto-optical atom cloud launching method. We anticipate that this system will be useful for a range of experimental studies of novel atom-surface interactions and atom trap miniaturization.

BACKGROUND: The evolutionarily conserved septin family of genes encode GTP binding proteins involved in a variety of cellular functions including cytokinesis, apoptosis, membrane dynamics and vesicle trafficking. Septin proteins can form hetero-oligomeric complexes and interact with other proteins including actin and tubulin. The human SEPT9 gene on chromosome 17q25.3 has a complex genomic architecture with 18 different transcripts that can encode 15 distinct polypeptides. Two distinct transcripts with unique 5' ends (SEPT9_v4 and SEPT9_v4*) encode the same protein. In tumours the ratio of these transcripts changes with elevated levels of SEPT9_v4* mRNA, a transcript that is translated with enhanced efficiency leading to increased SEPT9_i4 protein.
METHODS: We have examined the effect of over-expression of SEPT9_i4 on the dynamics of microtubule polymer mass in cultured cells.
RESULTS: We show that the microtubule network in SEPT9_i4 over-expressing cells resists disruption by paclitaxel or cold incubation but also repolymerises tubulin more slowly after microtubule depolymerisation. Finally we show that SEPT9_i4 over-expressing cells have enhanced survival in the presence of clinically relevant microtubule acting drugs but not after treatment with DNAinteracting agents.
CONCLUSIONS: Given that SEPT9 over-expression is seen in diverse tumours and in particular ovarian and breast cancer, such data indicate that SEPT9_v4 expression may be clinically relevant and contribute to some forms of drug resistance.

The effect of applied magnetic fields on the collective nonequilibrium dynamics of a strongly interacting Fe-C nanoparticle system has been investigated. It is experimentally shown that the magnetic aging diminishes to finally disappear for fields of moderate strength. The field needed to remove the observable aging behavior increases with decreasing temperature. The same qualitative behavior is observed in an amorphous metallic spin glass (Fe0.15Ni0.85)(75)P16B6Al3.

We report on the absolute calibration of a microchannel plate (MCP) detector, used in conjunction with a Thomson parabola spectrometer. The calibration delivers the relation between a registered count numbers in the CCD camera (on which the MCP phosphor screen is imaged) and the number of ions incident on MCP. The particle response of the MCP is evaluated for positive, negative, and neutral particles at energies below 1 MeV. As the response of MCP depends on the energy and the species of the ions, the calibration is fundamental for the correct interpretation of the experimental results. The calibration method and arrangement exploits the unique emission symmetry of a specific source of fast ions and atoms driven by a high power laser.

This Letter reports in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic data on thermal TiO films fabricated by heating titanium plates in air at 475, 700 and 800 °C. The films were studied in the dark and under UV-irradiation in aqueous 0.1MNaClO in the presence and absence of 0.1 M Na(OOC) and at 10, 25 and 50 °C. The film fabricated at 800 °C showed a broad feature near 1580cm under UV-irradiation that was not observed in the dark, whilst the films fabricated at lower temperatures, 475 and 700 °C, showed no such feature. This feature appears to be associated with the accumulation of surface-mobile holes at the complex, porous film-electrolyte interface and the capacity of such holes to enhance the absorption cross-section of optical phonons characteristic of the rutile crystal form at and near the surface of the TiO/electrolyte interface. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

We demonstrate genuine three-mode nonlocality based on phase-space formalism. A Svetlichny-type Bell inequality is formulated in terms of the s-parametrized quasiprobability function. We test such a tool using exemplary forms of three-mode entangled states, identifying the ideal measurement settings required for each state. We thus verify the presence of genuine three-mode nonlocality that cannot be reproduced by local or nonlocal hidden variable models between any two out of three modes. In our results, GHZ- and W-type nonlocality can be fully discriminated. We also study the behavior of genuine tripartite nonlocality under the effects of detection inefficiency and dissipation induced by local thermal environments. Our formalism can be useful to test the sharing of genuine multipartite quantum correlations among the elements of some interesting physical settings, including arrays of trapped ions and intracavity ultracold atoms. We unravel the complex chemistry in both the neutral and ionic systems of a radio-frequency-driven atmospheric-pressure plasma in a helium-oxygen mixture (He-0.5% O) with air impurity levels from 0 to 500 ppm of relative humidity from 0% to 100% using a zero-dimensional, time-dependent global model. Effects of humid air impurity on absolute densities and the dominant production and destruction pathways of biologically relevant reactive neutral species are clarified. A few hundred ppm of air impurity crucially changes the plasma from a simple oxygen-dependent plasma to a complex oxygen-nitrogen-hydrogen plasma. The density of reactive oxygen species decreases from 10 to 10 cm, which in turn results in a decrease in the overall chemical reactivity. Reactive nitrogen species (10 cm ), atomic hydrogen and hydroxyl radicals (10-10 cm) are generated in the plasma. With 500 ppm of humid air impurity, the densities of positively charged ions and negatively charged ions slightly increase and the electron density slightly decreases (to the order of 10 cm). The electronegativity increases up to 2.3 compared with 1.5 without air admixture. Atomic hydrogen, hydroxyl radicals and oxygen ions significantly contribute to the production and destruction of reactive oxygen and reactive nitrogen species. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

We propose a general framework to effectively `open' a high-Q resonator, that is, to release the quantum state initially prepared in it in the form of a traveling electromagnetic wave. This is achieved by employing a mediating mode that scatters coherently the radiation from the resonator into a one-dimensional continuum of modes such as a waveguide. The same mechanism may be used to `feed' a desired quantum field to an initially empty cavity. Switching between an `open' and `closed' resonator may then be obtained by controlling either the detuning of the scatterer or the amount of time it spends in the resonator. First, we introduce the model in its general form, identifying (i) the traveling mode that optimally retains the full quantum information of the resonator field and (ii) a suitable figure of merit that we study analytically in terms of the system parameters. Then, we discuss two feasible implementations based on ensembles of two-level atoms interacting with cavity fields. In addition, we discuss how to integrate traditional cavity QED in our proposal using three-level atoms.

The relativistic R-matrix method is used to calculate elastic and inelastic cross sections for electrons incident on caesium atoms with energies from 0-3 eV. These cross sections reveal a wealth of resonance structure in this energy range. The differential cross sections as well as the spin polarisation function S( theta ) and the left-right asymmetry function S( theta ) are calculated and enable conclusions to be drawn on the importance of spin-dependent interactions.
An investigation of the ((3p)(4s) ) resonances in the elastic scattering of electrons by argon atoms
Resumo:
Initial results are presented on the elastic scattering of electrons by argon atoms in the neighbourhood of the well known ((3p) (4s)) resonances. An R-matrix calculation is employed to investigate how the resonance characteristics change as the spin-orbit interaction is switched on.

The R-matrix method describing the scattering of low-energy electrons by complex atoms and ions is extended to include terms of the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian. An application is made to the astrophysically important 1s 2s S-1s 2s2p P transition in Fe XXIII, where in the most accurate calculations carried out all terms of the 1s 2s, 1s2s2p and 1s2p configurations are included in the expansion describing the collision. This gives up to 28 coupled channels for each total angular momentum and parity which are solved on a CRAY-1. The collision strengths are increased by more than a factor of two from their non-relativistic values at all energies considered.

The relativistic R-matrix method is used to calculate elastic and inelastic cross sections for electrons incident on caesium atoms with energies from 0-3 eV. In addition to the total cross sections, results are presented on the differential cross sections, sigma , and the spin polarisation, P, of the scattered electrons as a function of energy at the scattering angles 10 degrees , 50 degrees , 90 degrees and 150 degrees . The calculation reveals a wealth of resonances around the P and P thresholds. The resonances are analysed in detail and their role in the scattering process is discussed.

Phaseshifts, differential, total and momentum transfer cross sections are calculated using an R-matrix approach for the elastic scattering of electrons by argon atoms in the impact energy range 0-19 eV. The coupled-state calculation is based upon a single-configuration atomic ground-state wavefunction coupled to a P pseudostate. A critical assessment of earlier theoretical and experimental data is made and the conclusion is reached that the present results are the most satisfactory over the entire energy range considered.
