The occurrence of the fuel oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in the environment has received considerable scientific attention. The pollutant is frequently found in the groundwater due to leaking of underground storage tanks or pipelines. Concentrations of more than several mg/L MTBE were detected in groundwater at several places in the US and Germany in the last few years. In situ chemical oxidation is a promising treatment method for MTBE-contaminated plumes. This research investigated the reaction kinetics for the oxidation of MTBE by permanganate. Batch tests demonstrated that the oxidation of MTBE by permanganate is second order overall and first order individually with respect to permanganate and MTBE. The second-order rate constant was 1.426 x 10(-6) L/mg/h. The influence of pH on the reaction rate was demonstrated to have no significant effect. However, the rate of MTBE oxidation by potassium permanganate is 2-3 orders of magnitude lower than of other advanced oxidation processes. The slower rates of MTBE oxidation by permanganate limit the applicability of this process for rapid MTBE cleanup strategies. However, permanganate oxidation of MTBE has potential for passive oxidation risk management strategies. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
Softened C-H modes of adsorbed methyl and their implications for dehydrogenation: An ab initio study

To investigate the softening of CH vibrational frequencies and their implications for dehydrogenation of adsorbed hydrocarbons, an issue of scientific and technological importance, density functional theory calculations have been performed on the chemisorption and dehydrogenation of CH3 on Cu(111) and Pt(111) surfaces. By comparing these results with those of Ni(111) we find that the CH bonds of the adsorbate, when close enough, interact with metal atoms of the surface. It is this interaction and its associated lengthening and weakening of CH bonds that is the physical origin of mode softening. We rule out the possibility of a relationship between the mere presence of mode softening and dehydrogenation. We do show, however, that there is a clear relationship between the extent to which a surface can induce mode softening and the activation energy to dehydrogenation. In addition, periodic trends concerning the extent of mode softening are reproduced. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

A series of twelve benzoate esters was metabolised, by species of the Phellinus genus of wood-rotting fungi, to yield the corresponding benzyl alcohol derivatives and eight salicylates. The isolation of a stable oxepine metabolite, from methyl benzoate, allied to evidence of the migration and retention of a carbomethoxy group ( the NIH Shift), during enzyme-catalysed ortho-hydroxylation of alkyl benzoates to form salicylates, is consistent with a mechanism involving an initial arene epoxidation step. This mechanism was confirmed by the isolation of a remarkably stable, optically active, substituted benzene oxide metabolite of methyl 2-( trifluoromethyl) benzoate, which slowly converted into the racemic form. The arene oxide was found to undergo a cycloaddition reaction with 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione to yield a crystalline cycloadduct whose structure and racemic nature was established by X-ray crystallography. The metabolite was also found to undergo some novel benzene oxide reactions, including epoxidation to give an anti-diepoxide, base-catalysed hydrolysis to form a trans-dihydrodiol and acid-catalysed aromatisation to yield a salicylate derivative via the NIH Shift of a carbomethoxy group.

The influence of the poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) plasticizer content and molecular weight on the physicochemical properties of films cast from aqueous blends of poly(methyl vinyl ether-co-maleic acid) (PMVE/MA) was investigated with tensile mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and attenuated total reflectance/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Unplasticized films and those containing high copolymer contents were very difficult to handle and proved difficult to test. PEG with a molecular weight of 200 Da was the most efficient plasticizer. However, films cast from aqueous blends containing 10% (w/w) PMVE/MA and either PEG 1000 or PEG 10,000 when the copolymer/plasticizer ratio was 4 : 3 and those cast from aqueous blends containing 15% (w/w) PMVE/MA and either PEG 1000 or PEG 10,000 when the copolymer/plasticizer ratio was 2 : 1 possessed mechanical properties most closely mimicking those of a formulation we have used clinically in photodynamic therapy. Importantly, we found previously that films cast from aqueous blends containing 10% (w/w) PMVE/MA performed rather poorly in the clinical setting, where uptake of moisture from patients' skin led to reversion of the formulation to a thick gel. Consequently, we are now investigating films cast from aqueous blends containing 15% (w/w) PMVE/MA and either PEG 1000 or PEG 10,000, where the copolymer/plasticizer ratio is 2 : 1, as possible Food and Drug Administration approved replacements for our current formulation, which must currently be used only on a named patient basis as its plasticizer, tripropylene glycol methyl ether, is not currently available in pharmaceutical grade

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV) is the primary inactivator of glucoregulatory incretin hormones. This has lead to development of DPP IV inhibitors as a new class of agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Recent reports indicate that other antidiabetic drugs, such as metformin, may also have inhibitory effects on DPP IV activity. In this investigation we show that high concentrations of several antidiabetic drug classes, namely thiazolidinediones, sulphonylureas, meglitinides and morphilinoguanides can inhibit DPP IV The strongest inhibitor nateglinide, the insulin-releasing meglitinide was effective at low therapeutically relevant concentrations as low as 25 mu mol/l. Nateglinide also prevented the degradation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) by DPP IV in a time and concentration-dependent manner. In vitro nateglinide and GLP-1 effects on insulin release were additive. In vivo nateglinide improved the glucose-lowering and insulin-releasing activity of GLP-1 in obese-diabetic ob/ob mice. This was accompanied by significantly enhanced circulating concentrations of active GLP-1(7-36)amide and lower levels of DPP IV activity. Nateglinide similarly benefited the glucose and insulin responses to feeding in ob/ob mice and such actions were abolished by coadministration of exendin(9-39) and (Pro(3))GIP to block incretin hormone action. These data indicate that the use of nateglinide as a prandial insulin-releasing agent may partly rely on inhibition of GLP-1 degradation as well as beta-cell K-ATP channel inhibition. The mixing of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement has been studied to develop methods for preparing a consistently high quality cement. A novel droplet test experimental procedure was developed that characterised the wetting characteristics involved in bone cement mixing. Using this technique it was established that increased wetting occurred by mixing bone cement at a lower temperature (-28 degreesC) than normal mixing at room temperature.

The kinetics of the acid-catalysed hydrolysis of cellobiose in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [C(2)mim]Cl, was studied as a model for general lignocellulosic biomass hydrolysis in ionic liquid systems. The results show that the rate of the two competing reactions, polysaccharide hydrolysis and sugar decomposition, vary with acid strength, and that for acids with an aqueous pK(a) below approximately zero, the hydrolysis reaction is significantly faster than the degradation of glucose, thus allowing hydrolysis to be performed with a high selectivity in glucose. In tests with soluble cellulose, hemicellulose (xylan), and lignocellulosic biomass (Miscanthus grass), comparable hydrolysis rates were observed with bond scission occurring randomly along the biopolymer chains, in contrast to end-group hydrolysis observed with aqueous acids.

The structure consists of six coordinate cobalt in an octahedral geometry bonded to the tridentate tptz ligand and three chlorines. The non-coordinating pyridyl group in the tptz ligand is protonated (with the protonated nitrogen crystallographically disordered over two possible sites), providing overall charge neutrality for the complex.

The room temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [C(4)mim][PF6] was found to be an efficient plasticizer for poly( methyl methacrylate), prepared by in situ radical polymerization in the ionic liquid medium; the polymers have physical characteristics comparable with those containing traditional plasticizers and retain greater thermal stability.
