The band structure of CdI has been calculated using a modified semi-empirical tight-binding method and the results obtained have been compared with both angularly averaged and angularly resolved photoemission spectra. The theoretically computed density of states distribution is in excellent agreement with angularly averaged results and all the main features observed experimentally are reproduced in the theory. Angularly resolved spectra have been used to draw up energy band dispersion curves directly and agreement with calculated bands in both the Gamma M and Gamma K directions of the Brillouin zone is good.

The band structure of the intercalation complex of LiTiS has been computed using a semi-empirical tight-binding method and this is compared with the results of a revised TiS calculation. The results obtained confirm that changes in the basic electrical characteristics of TiS, which occur when it is intercalated with lithium, can be attributed to a rigid-band filling of its lowest unoccupied electron states as has previously been proposed. However, they also suggest that intercalation can act to alter the nature and the dispersion of some of the energy bands in the unintercalated crystal. The bands which are most affected by the process are those which derive from orbitals which have the same symmetry as the lithium 2s orbital, namely, the titanium 4s conduction level and the tightly bound sulphur 3s levels.

Emission line fluxes from cool stars are widely used to establish an apparent emission measure distribution, EmdApp(Te), between temperatures characteristic of the low transition region and the low corona. The true emission measure distribution, EmdTrue(Te), is determined by the energy balance and geometry adopted and, with a numerical model, can be used to predict EmdApp(Te), to guide further modelling. The scaling laws that exist between coronal parameters arise from the dimensions of the terms in the energy balance equation. Here, analytical approximations to numerical solutions for EmdTrue(Te) are presented, which show how the constants in the coronal scaling laws are determined. The apparent emission measure distributions show a minimum value at some T0 and a maximum at the mean coronal temperature Tc (although in some stars, emission from active regions can contribute). It is shown that, for the energy balance and geometry adopted, the analytical values of the emission measure and electron pressure at T0 and Tc depend on only three parameters: the stellar surface gravity and the values of T0 and Tc. The results are tested against full numerical solutions for e Eri (K2 V) and are applied to Procyon (a CMi, F5 IV/V). The analytical approximations can be used to restrict the required range of full numerical solutions, to check the assumed geometry and to show where the adopted energy balance may not be appropriate. © 2011 The Authors Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society © 2011 RAS.

We carry out the first multi-dimensional radiative transfer calculations to simultaneously compute synthetic spectra and light curves for models of supernovae driven by fast bipolar outflows. These allow us to make self-consistent predictions for the orientation dependence of both color evolution and spectral features. We compare models with different degrees of asphericity and metallicity and find significant observable consequences of both. In aspherical models, we find spectral and light curve features that vary systematically with observer orientation. In particular, we find that the early-phase light curves are brighter and bluer when viewed close to the polar axis but that the peak flux is highest for equatorial (off-axis) inclinations. Spectral line features also depend systematically on observer orientation, including the velocity of the Si II 6355 Å line. Consequently, our models predict a correlation between line velocity and color that could assist the identification of supernovae associated with off-axis jet-driven explosions. The amplitude and range of this correlation depends on the degree of asphericity, the metallicity, and the epoch of observation but we find that it is always present and acts in the same direction. © 2012. Objectives: Family caregivers play a vital role in maintaining the lives of individuals with advanced illness living in the community. However, the responsibility of caregiving for an end-of-life family member can have profound consequences on the psychological, physical and financial well-being of the caregiver. While the literature has identified caregiver stress or strain as a complex process with multiple contributing factors, few comprehensive studies exist. This study examined a wide range of theory-driven variables contributing to family caregiver stress. Method: Data variables from interviews with primary family caregivers were mapped onto the factors within the Stress Process Model theoretical framework. A hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the strongest predictors of caregiver strain as measured by a validated composite index, the Caregiver Strain Index. Results: The study included 132 family caregivers across south-central/western Ontario, Canada. About half of these caregivers experienced high strain, the extent of which was predicted by lower perceived program accessibility, lower functional social support, greater weekly amount of time caregivers committed to the care recipient, younger caregiver age and poorer caregiver self-perceived health. Conclusion: This study examined the influence of a multitude of factors in the Stress Process Model on family caregiver strain, finding stress to be a multidimensional construct. Perceived program accessibility was the strongest predictor of caregiver strain, more so than intensity of care, highlighting the importance of the availability of community resources to support the family caregiving role.

The recent synthesis of a new hydrogen binary hydrate with the sH structure has highlighted the potential storage capabilities of water clathrates [T. A. Strobel, C. A. Koh, and E. D. Sloan, J. Phys. Chem. B 112, 1885 (2008) and A. R. C. Duarte, A. Shariati, L. J. Rovetto, and C. J. Peters, J. Phys. Chem. B 112, 1888 (2008)]. In this work, the absorption of hydrogen and the promoters used in the experimental work are considered using a simplified model for the host-guest interaction, which allows one to understand the stabilizing effects of multiple help molecules. Two further hypothetical clathrates, which are isostructural with known zeolite structures, are also investigated. It is shown that the energy gained by absorbing adamantane into these two frameworks is far greater than that gained upon absorption of adamantane into the sH structure. Hence, a clathrate with the same topology as the DDR (Sigma 1) zeolite may be synthesizable with adamantane and hydrogen as guest molecules as, in the conditions explored here, this phase appears to be more stable than the sH structure.
