The aqueous phase reforming (APR) of xylitol was studied in a continuous fixed bed reactor over three catalysts: Pt/Al2O3, Pt/TiO2 and Pt-Re/TiO2. The data obtained in the case of the monometallic Pt catalysts was compared to the bimetallic Pt-Re sample. The effect of Re addition on the catalyst stability, activity, product formation and selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was studied. The bimetallic catalyst demonstrated a higher selectivity to alkanes compared to the monometallic samples. The monometallic catalyst was more selective toward hydrogen formation. A plausible reaction scheme explaining differences in selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was proposed and discussed.

This laboratory experiment systematically examines arsenic, iron, and phosphorus solubilities in soil suspensions as affected by addition of phosphorus fertilizer under different redox potential (Eh) and pH conditions. Under aerobic conditions, As solubility was low, however, under moderately reducing conditions (0, -150 mV), As solubility significantly increased due to dissolution of iron oxy-hydroxides. Upon reduction to -250 mV, As solubility was controlled by the formation of insoluble sulfides, and as a result soluble As contents significantly decreased. Soluble Fe concentration increased from moderate to highly anaerobic conditions; however, it decreased under aerobic conditions likely due to formation of insoluble oxy-hydroxides. A low pH, 5.5, led to increased soluble concentrations of As, Fe, and P. Finally, addition of P-fertilizers resulted in higher soluble P and As, even though the concentration of As did not increased after an addition rate of 600 mg P kg(-1) soil. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. Uses of plants extracts are found to be more advantageous over chemical, physical and microbial (bacterial, fungal, algal) methods for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesis. In phytonanosynthesis, biochemical diversity of plant extract, non-pathogenicity, low cost and flexibility in reaction parameters are accounted for high rate of AgNPs production with different shape, size and applications. At the same time, care has to be taken to select suitable phytofactory for AgNPs synthesis based on certain parameters such as easy availability, large-scale nanosynthesis potential and non-toxic nature of plant extract. This review focuses on synthesis of AgNPs with particular emphasis on biological synthesis using plant extracts. Some points have been given on selection of plant extract for AgNPs synthesis and case studies on AgNPs synthesis using different plant extracts. Reaction parameters contributing to higher yield of nanoparticles are presented here. Synthesis mechanisms and overview of present and future applications of plant-extract-synthesized AgNPs are also discussed here. Limitations associated with use of AgNPs are summarised in the present review.

In order to combine the mechanical properties of yttria-stabilised zirconia (ZrO2-3 mol% Y2O3; code Y-ZrO2) with the bioactivity of titania (TiO2), Y-ZrO2-TiO2, green compacts with 0-40vol.% TiO2 were sintered at 1300, 1400, and 1500degreesC for 4h, respectively. The microstructural features such as grains, pores, and phases were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). The mechanical properties such as hardness and toughness were also determined using the methods of Vickers indentation and Knoop indentation. All the composites showed the major tetragonal Y-ZrO2 phase regardless of the content of the added TiO2. However, rutile TiO2 phase was obtained at 1300degreesC, whereas zirconium titanate (ZrTi04) phase was found at 1400 and 1500degreesC. The Y-ZrO2-ZrTiO4 Composites sintered at 1500degreesC showed relatively high hardness (860-1000 kg/mm(2)) and toughness (4.0-4.5 MPa m(0.5)), whereas the Y-ZrO2-TiO2 composites sintered at 1300degreesC had slightly lower hardness (720-950kg/mm(2)) and fracture toughness (3.1-3.3 MPa m(0.5)). Tunnel construction planning requires careful consideration of the spoil management part, as this involves environmental, economic and legal requirements. In this paper a methodological approach that considers the interaction between technical and geological factors in determining the features of the resulting muck is proposed. This gives indications about the required treatments as well as laboratory and field characterisation tests to be performed to assess muck recovery alternatives. While this reuse is an opportunity for excavations in good quality homogeneous grounds (e.g. granitic mass), it is critical for complex formation. This approach has been validated, at present, for three different geo-materials resulting from a tunnel excavation carried out with a large diameter Earth Pressure Balance Shield (EPB) through a complex geological succession. Physical parameters and technological features of the three materials have been assessed, according to their valorisation potential, for defining re-utilisation patterns. The methodology proved to be effective and the laboratory tests carried out on the three materials allowed the suitability and treatment effectiveness for each muck recovery strategy to be defined. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Background: Following progress of the dapivirine (DPV)-releasing silicone elastomer (SE) vaginal ring (VR) into Phase III clinical studies, there is now interest in developing next-generation rings that additionally provide contraception. Levonorgestrel (LNG) is a safe and effective progestin that is being widely considered for use as a hormonal contraceptive agent in future multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) products. Although LNG has previously been incorporated into various controlled release SE devices, minimal attention has focused on its propensity to irreversibly react with addition cure SE systems. Here, for the first time, we investigate this LNG binding phenomenon and outline strategies for overcoming it.
Methods: VRs containing various loadings of DPV and LNG were manufactured and in vitro release assessed. Different LNG-only SE samples were also prepared to assess the following parameters: (i) addition cure vs. condensation cure SEs; (ii) different types of addition cure SEs; (iii) mixing time, (iv) cure temperature, (v) cure time; and (vi) LNG particle size. After manufacture, the LNG-only samples were assayed for total drug content using a solvent extraction method. The SE curing reaction and the LNG binding reaction was probed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Results:
Under certain drug/formulation/processing conditions, LNG was not recoverable from VRs. Further studies using non-ring samples showed that: (a) the phenomenon was only observed with addition cure SEs (and not condensation cure SEs); (b) the extent of binding was dependent upon the type of addition cure SE; (c) micronised LNG showed significantly greater binding than non-micronised LNG; (d) the extent of binding correlated with increased mixing time, cure time and cure temperature.
Conclusions: Careful control of the API characteristics, the SE composition, and the manufacturing conditions will be necessary to establish a practical VR formulation for controlled release of LNG.

A prism coupling arrangement is used to excite surface plasmons at the surface of a thin silver aim and a photon scanning tunnelling microscope is used to detect the evanescent field above the silver surface. Excitation of the silver/ air mode of interest is performed at lambda(1) = 632 . 8 nm using a tightly focused beam, while the control of the tip is effected by exciting a counter-propagating surface plasmon field at a different wavelength. lambda(2) = 543 . 5 nm, using an unfocused beam covering a macroscopic area. Propagation of the red surface plasmon is evidenced by an exponential tail extending away from the launch site, but this feature is abruptly truncated if the surface plasmon encounters the edge of the silver film - there is no specularly reflected 'beam'. Importantly, the radiative decay of the surface mode at the film edge is observable only at larger tip-sample separations, emphasizing the importance of accessing the mesoscopic regime.

The spectroscopic capability of the photon scanning tunneling microscope is exploited to study directly the launch and propagation of surface plasmons on thin silver films. Two input beams, of different wavelength, are incident through the prism in a prism-Ag film-air-fibre tip system. Both excite surface plasmons at the Ag-air interface and light of both wavelengths is coupled into the fibre probe via the respective surface plasmon evanescent fields. One laser beam is used for instrument control. The second, or probe beam is tightly focused on the sample, within the area of the unfocused or control beam, giving a well-defined and symmetrical, confined surface plasmon launch site. However, the image at the probe wavelength is highly asymmetrical in section with an exponential tail extending beyond one side of the launch site. This demonstrates in a very direct fashion;the propagation of surface plasmons; a propagation length of similar to 11.7 mu m is measured at a probe wavelength of 543.5 nm. On rough Ag films the excitation of localised scattering centres is also observed in addition to the launch of delocalised surface plasmons.

The search for ideal biomaterials is still on-going for tissue regeneration. In this study, blends of Poly ε-caprolactone (PCL) with Poly l-lactic acid (PLLA), Nalidixic Acid (NA) and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) were prepared. Mechanical and thermal properties of the blends were investigated by tensile and flexural analysis, DSC, TGA, WXRD, MFI, BET, SEM and hot stage optical microscopy. Results showed that the loading of PLLA caused a significant decrease in tensile strength and almost total eradication of the elongation at break of PCL matrix, especially after PEG and NA addition. Increased stiffness was also noted with additional NA, PEG and PLLA, resulting in an increase in the flexural modulus of the blends.
Isothermal degradation indicated that bulk PCL, PLLA and the blends were thermally stable at 200°C for the duration of 2h making extrusion of the blends at this temperature viable. Morphological study showed that increasing the PLLA content and addition of the very low viscosity PEG and powder NA decreased the Melt Flow Indexer and increased the viscosity.
At the higher temperature the PLLA begins to soften and eventually melts allowing for increased flow and, coupling this with, the natural increase in MFI caused by temperature is enhanced further. The PEG and NA addition increased dramatically the pore volume which is important for cell growth and flow transport of nutrients and metabolic waste.

This paper describes the extraction of C5-C8 linear α-olefins from olefin/paraffin mixtures of the same carbon number using silver(I)/N,N-dimethylbenzamide bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N]) or silver(I)/propylamine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ag(PrNH2)2][Tf2N]) as the extracting agent. The separation performance of the system increased with increasing chain length. [Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N] appeared to outperform [Ag(PrNH2)2][Tf2N] in terms of both selectivity and distribution coefficient. The [Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N] system was successfully modeled using the universal quasi-chemical activity coefficient (UNIQUAC) model. These results support the potential future development of amine/amide-based ligands for producing soluble silver complexes useful for the separation of olefins from paraffins.

A catalyst system comprising 10 mol % (Pd(OAc) and 20 mol % PPh3 effects the cyclisation of aryl halides onto proximate alkenes via 5-, 6-, and 7-exo-trig, and 7-endo-trig processes giving a variety of bridged-ring carbo- and hetero-cycles in excellent yield. Double bond isomerisation in the product is rarely encountered and may be suppressed by the addition of Tl(1) salts. One example of diastereospecific bis-cyclisation is given and the crystal structure of 1-aza-2-sulphonyl-3,4-benzobicyclo[3.2.1]nona-6-ene is reported.

BARTON 1 has suggested that photoelectron interference patterns may be used directly as holograms to obtain atomic-resolution images of surface structures. Bulk structures have been obtained previously by this means from experimental patterns of high-energy Kikuchi(quasi-elastically scattered) and Auger electrons 2,3. Here we test the feasibility of this technique for determination of surface structures using Auger intensity patterns obtained 4,5 from iodine chemisorbed on a pseudomorphic silver monolayer on Pt{111}. By direct numerical holographic inversion, we obtain three-dimensional images which show that iodine adatoms are located in hollows of 3-fold symmetry on the surface. The images yield the site symmetry with good atomic resolution in the surface plane, but suffer from poor resolution along the Ag-I axis. We anticipate that data with better angular resolution obtained at low temperatures would improve the spatial resolution of such images.

Modification of citrate and hydroxylamine reduced Ag colloids with thiocholine bromide, a thiol functionalized quaternary ammonium salt, creates particles where the zeta potential is switched from the normal values of ca. -50 mV to ca. + 50 mV. These colloids are stable but can be aggregated with metal salts in much the same way as the parent colloids. They are excellent SERS substrates for detection of anionic targets since their positive zeta potentials promote adsorption of negatively charged ions. This is important because the vast majority of published SERS studies involve cationic or neutral targets. Moreover, the fact that the modifier is a quaternary ammonium ion means that the negative surface charge is maintained even at alkaline pH. The modified colloids can be used to detect compounds which cannot be detected using conventional negatively-charged citrate or hydroxylamine reduced metal nanoparticles, for example the detection limit was 5.0 x 10(-5) M for perchlorate and
