We here analyse the observational SO and CS data presented in Nilsson ct al. (2000). The SO/CS integrated intensity ratio maps are presented for 19 molecular clouds, together with tables of relevant ratios at strategic positions, where we have also observed (SO)-S-34 and/or (CS)-S-34. The SO/CS abundance ratio as calculated from an LTE analysis is highly varying within and between the sources. Our isotopomer observations and Monte Carlo simulations verify that this is not an artifact due to optical depth problems. The variation of the maximum SO/CS abundance ratio between the clouds is 0.2-7. The largest variations within a cloud are found for the most nearby objects, possibly indicating resolution effects. We have also performed time dependent chemical simulations. We compare the simulations with our observed SO/CS abundance ratios and suggest a varying oxygen to carbon initial abundance, differing temporal evolution, density differences and X-ray sources associated with young stellar objects as possible explanations to the variations. In particular, the observed variation of the maximum SO/CS abundance ratio between the clouds can be explained by using initial O/C+ abundance ratios in the range 1.3-2.5. We finally derive a relationship between the SO/CS and O-2/CO abundance ratios, which may be used as a guide to find the most promising interstellar O-2 search targets.

We discuss how common problems arising with multi/many core distributed architectures can he effectively handled through co-design of parallel/distributed programming abstractions and of autonomic management of non-functional concerns. In particular, we demonstrate how restricted patterns (or skeletons) may be efficiently managed by rule-based autonomic managers. We discuss the basic principles underlying pattern+manager co-design, current implementations inspired by this approach and some result achieved with proof-or-concept, prototype.

The structure of tris-chloro[2,6-bis(2'-pyridyl)-4-(2'-pyridinium)-1,3,5-triazine]cobalt(II) monohydrate, [Co(C18H13N6)Cl-3]center dot H2O (C2/c (No. 15), a = 7.783(11), b = 22.42(3), c = 11.001(15) angstrom, beta = 90.05(2)degrees), crystallized from the open air reaction of CoCl2 and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine in the ionic liquid, N-butyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide is reported. The structure consists of six coordinate cobalt in an octahedral geometry bonded to the tridentate tptz ligand and three chlorines. The non-coordinating pyridyl group in the tptz ligand is protonated (with the protonated nitrogen crystallographically disordered over two possible sites), providing overall charge neutrality for the complex.

Incorporation of 1-alkylcarbonyloxymethylprodrugs of 5FU into poly(lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles using nanoprecipitation methods gave increased loading efficiencies over that obtained using the parent drug substance. SEM studies revealed spherical nanoparticles of around 200 nm in diameter, corresponding well with measurements made using photon correlation spectroscopy. The C-7 prodrug gave the best mean loading of 47.23%, which compared favourably to 3.68% loading achieved with 5FU. Loading efficiency was seen to follow the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance in the homologue series, where increases in lipophilicities alone were not good predictors of loading. Drug release, in terms of resultant 5FU concentration, was monitored using a flow-through dissolution apparatus. Cumulative drug release from nanoparticles loaded with the C-5 prodrug was linear over 6h, with approximately 14% of the total available 5FU dose released and with no evidence of a burst effect. The flux profile of the C-5-loaded nanoparticles showed an initial peak in flux in the first sampling interval, but became linear for the remainder of the release phase. C-7-loaded nanoparticles released considerably less (4% in 6 h) with a similar flux pattern to that seen with the C-5 prodrug. The C-9-loaded nanoparticles released less than 1% of the available 5FU over 6 h, with a similar zero-order profile. The C7 prodrug was deemed to be the prodrug of choice, achieving the highest loadings and releasing 5FU, following hydrolysis, in a zero-order fashion over a period of at least 6 h. Given the lack of burst effect and steady-state flux conditions, this nanoparticulate formulation offers a better dosing strategy for sustained intravenous use when compared to that arising from nanoparticles made by direct incorporation of 5FU. Chironomid-inferred Late-Glacial Summer Air Temperatures From Lough Nadourcan, Co. Donegal, Ireland.

Western Ireland, located adjacent to the North Atlantic, and with a strongly oceanic climate, is potentially sensitive to rapid and extreme climate change. We present the first high-resolution chironomid-inferred mean July temperature reconstruction for Ireland, spanning the late-glacial and early Holocene (LGIT, 15-10 ka BP). The reconstruction suggests an initial rapid warming followed by a short cool phase early in the interstadial. During the interstadial there are oscillations in the inferred temperatures which may relate to Greenland Interstadial events GI-1a-e. The temperature decrease into the stadial occurs in two stages. This two-stage drop can also be seen in other late-glacial chironomid-inferred temperature records from the British Isles. A stepped rise in temperatures into the Holocene, consistent with present-day temperatures in Donegal, is inferred. The results show strong similarities with previously published LGIT chironomid-inferred temperature reconstructions, and with the NGRIP oxygen-isotope curve, which indicates that the oscillations observed in the NGRIP record are of hemispherical significance. The results also highlight the influence of the North Atlantic on the Irish climate throughout the LGIT.

Background: Male infertility is a common cause of reproductive failure in humans. In mice, targeted deletions of the genes coding for FKBP6 or FKBP52, members of the FK506 binding protein family, can result in male infertility. In the case of FKBP52, this reflects an important role in potentiating Androgen Receptor (AR) signalling in the prostate and accessory glands, but not the testis. In infertile men, no mutations of FKBP52 or FKBP6 have been found so far, but the gene for FKBP-like (FKBPL) maps to chromosome 6p21.3, an area linked to azoospermia in a group of Japanese patients.

Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) has many favourable attributes for tissue engineering scaffold applications. A major drawback, however, is its slow degradation rate, typically greater than 3 years. In this study PCL was melt blended with a small percentage of poly(aspartic acid-co-lactide) (PAL) and the degradation behaviour was evaluated in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at 37 degrees C. The addition of PAL was found to significantly enhance the degradation profile of PCL. Subsequent degradation behaviour was investigated in terms of the polymer's mechanical properties, Molecular weight (M-w), mass changes and thermal characteristics. The results indicate that the addition of PAL accelerates the degradation of PCL, with 20% mass loss recorded after just 7 months in vitro for samples containing 8 wt% PAL. The corresponding pure PCL samples exhibited no mass loss over the same time period. In vitro assessment of PCL and PCL/PAL composites in tissue Culture medium in the absence of cells revealed stable pH readings with time. SEM studies of cell/biomaterial interactions demonstrated biocompatibility of C3H10T1/2 cells with PCL and PCL/PAL composites at all concentrations of PAL additive. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The degradation of resorbable polymeric devices often takes months to years. Accelerated testing at elevated temperatures is an attractive but controversial technique. The purposes of this paper include: (a) to provide a summary of the mathematical models required to analyse accelerated degradation data and to indicate the pitfalls of using these models; (b) to improve the model previously developed by Han and Pan; (c) to provide a simple version of the model of Han and Pan with an analytical solution that is convenient to use; (d) to demonstrate the application of the improved model in two different poly(lactic acid) systems. It is shown that the simple analytical relations between molecular weight and degradation time widely used in the literature can lead to inadequate conclusions. In more general situations the rate equations are only part of a complete degradation model. Together with previous works in the literature, our study calls for care in using the accelerated testing technique.

The motivation for this paper is to present procedures for automatically creating idealised finite element models from the 3D CAD solid geometry of a component. The procedures produce an accurate and efficient analysis model with little effort on the part of the user. The technique is applicable to thin walled components with local complex features and automatically creates analysis models where 3D elements representing the complex regions in the component are embedded in an efficient shell mesh representing the mid-faces of the thin sheet regions. As the resulting models contain elements of more than one dimension, they are referred to as mixed dimensional models. Although these models are computationally more expensive than some of the idealisation techniques currently employed in industry, they do allow the structural behaviour of the model to be analysed more accurately, which is essential if appropriate design decisions are to be made. Also, using these procedures, analysis models can be created automatically whereas the current idealisation techniques are mostly manual, have long preparation times, and are based on engineering judgement. In the paper the idealisation approach is first applied to 2D models that are used to approximate axisymmetric components for analysis. For these models 2D elements representing the complex regions are embedded in a 1D mesh representing the midline of the cross section of the thin sheet regions. Also discussed is the coupling, which is necessary to link the elements of different dimensionality together. Analysis results from a 3D mixed dimensional model created using the techniques in this paper are compared to those from a stiffened shell model and a 3D solid model to demonstrate the improved accuracy of the new approach. At the end of the paper a quantitative analysis of the reduction in computational cost due to shell meshing thin sheet regions demonstrates that the reduction in degrees of freedom is proportional to the square of the aspect ratio of the region, and for long slender solids, the reduction can be proportional to the aspect ratio of the region if appropriate meshing algorithms are used.

Computer simulations of (i) a [C(12)mim][Tf2N] film of nanometric thickness squeezed at kbar pressure by a piecewise parabolic confining potential reveal a mesoscopic in-plane density and composition modulation reminiscent of mesophases seen in 3D samples of the same room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL). Near 2D confinement, enforced by a high normal load, as well as relatively long aliphatic chains are strictly required for the mesophase formation, as confirmed by computations for two related systems made of (ii) the same [C(12)mim][Tf2N] adsorbed at a neutral solid surface and (iii) a shorter-chain RTIL ([C(4)mim][Tf2N]) trapped in the potential well of part i. No in-plane modulation is seen for ii and iii. In case ii, the optimal arrangement of charge and neutral tails is achieved by layering parallel to the surface, while, in case iii, weaker dispersion and packing interactions are unable to bring aliphatic tails together into mesoscopic islands, against overwhelming entropy and Coulomb forces. The onset of in-plane mesophases could greatly affect the properties of long-chain RTILs used as lubricants.
