The mechanical behavior of microfibrilar composites (MFC), consisting of a matrix of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and reinforcement of polyamide 6 (PA6) fibrils, with and without compatibilization, was studied. The composites were produced by conventional processing techniques with various shape and arrangement of the PA6 reinforcing entities: long, unidirectional, or crossed bundles of fibrils (UDP and CPC, respectively), middle-length, randomly oriented bristles (MRB), or non-oriented micrometric PA6 spheres (NOM). The tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the MFC materials (UDP, CPC, and MRB) were determined as a function of the PA6 reinforcement shape, alignment and content, and compared with those of NOM, the non-fibrous composite. It was concluded that the in-situ MFC materials based on HDPE/PA6 blends display improvements in the mechanical behavior when compared with the neat HDPE matrix, e.g., up to 33% for the Young modulus, up to 119% for the ultimate tensile strength, and up to 80% for the flexural stiffness. An unusual application of hydrological understanding to a police search is described. The lacustrine search for a missing person provided reports of bottom-water currents in the lake and contradictory indications from cadaver dogs. A hydrological model of the area was developed using pre-existing information from side scan sonar, a desktop hydrogeological study and deployment of water penetrating radar (WPR). These provided a hydrological theory for the initial search involving subaqueous groundwater flow, focused on an area of bedrock surrounded by sediment, on the lake floor. The work shows the value a hydrological explanation has to a police search operation (equally to search and rescue). With hindsight, the desktop study should have preceded the search, allowing better understanding of water conditions. The ultimate reason for lacustrine flow in this location is still not proven, but the hydrological model explained the problems encountered in the initial search.

Are anarchy and the law antithetical? Not so, as for more than 350 years international law has governed a legal order based on anarchy; wherein no central authority exists and law functions not on the basis of coercion but on cooperation whereby States must agree to each specific laws before it is bound by its obligations. This article contemplates two manners in which an anarchist might consider international law interesting: first, as a legal system which governs an anarchical society as described by Hedley Bull in line with the English School of International Relations; and second, as a manifestation of a State system which, though illegitimate can be utilized, as Noam Chomsky does, for tactical reasons to demonstrate its inconsistencies and thus weakening the system with the ultimate aim being its implosion

Thin, oxidised Al films grown an one face of fused silica prisms are exposed. tinder ambient conditions, to single shots from an excimer laser operating at wavelength 248 nm. Preliminary characterisation of the films using attenuated total reflection yields optical and thickness data for the Al and Al oxide layers; this step facilitates the subsequent, accurate tuning of the excimer laser pulse to the: surface plasmon resonance at the Al/(oxide)/air interface and the calculation of the fluence actually absorbed by the thin film system. Ablation damage is characterised using scanning electron, and atomic force microscopy. When the laser pulse is incident, through the prism on the sample at less than critical angle, the damage features are molten in nature with small islands of sub-micrometer dimension much in evidence, a mechanism of film melt-through and subsegment blow-off due to the build up of vapour pressure at the substrate/film interface is appropriate. By contrast, when the optical input is surface plasmon mediated, predominately mechanical damage results with the film fragmenting into large flakes of dimensions on the order of 10 mu m. It is suggested that the ability of surface plasmons to transport energy leads to enhanced, preferential absorption of energy at defect sites causing stress throughout the film which exceeds the ultimate tensile stress for the film: this in turn leads to film break-up before melting can onset. Improvements in the structural performance of glulam timber beams by the inclusion of reinforcing materials can increase both the service performance and ultimate capacity. This paper describes a series of four-point bending tests conducted, under service loads and to failure, on unreinforced, reinforced and post-tensioned glulam timber beams, where the reinforcing tendon used is 12 mm dia. basalt fibre-reinforced polymer. The research is designed to evaluate the benefits offered by including an active reinforcement in contrast to the passive reinforcement typically used within timber strengthening works, in addition to establishing the effect that bonding the reinforcing tendon has on the material's performance. Further experimental tests have also been developed to investigate the long-term implications of this research, with emphasis placed upon creep and loss of post-tensioning; however, this is ongoing and is not presented in this paper. The laboratory investigations establish that the flexural strength and stiffness increase for both the unbonded and bonded post-tensioned timbers compared to the unreinforced and reinforced beams. Timber that is post-tensioned with an unbonded basalt fibre-reinforced polymer tendon shows a flexural strength increase of 2ṡ8% and an increase in stiffness of 8ṡ7%. Post-tensioned beams with a bonded basalt fibre-reinforced polymer tendon show increases in flexural strength and stiffness of 15ṡ4% and 11ṡ5% respectively.

In recent years research focusing on the addition of fibre reinforced polymers to strengthen members has yielded positive results. However, the FRP material is still a relatively expensive material and its full potential has not been realised in combination with structural timber. This paper describes a series of four-point bending tests that were conducted, under service and ultimate loads, on post-tensioned glulam timber beams where the reinforcing tendon used was 12 mm diameter Basalt Fibre Reinforced Polymer (BFRP). The research was designed to evaluate the additional benefits of including an active type of reinforcement, by post-tensioning the BFRP tendon, as opposed to the passive approach of simply reinforcing the timber beam.
From the laboratory investigations, it was established that there was a 16% increase in load carrying capacity, in addition to a 14% reduction in deflection under service loads when members containing the post-tensioned BFRP composite are compared with control timber specimens. Additionally a more favourable ductile failure mode was witnessed compared to the brittle failure of an unreinforced timber beam. The results support the assumption that by initially stressing the embedded FRP tendon the structural benefits experienced by the timber member increase in a number of ways, indicating that there is significant scope for this approach in practical applications.

The laboratory investigations established that the flexural strength and stiffness increased for both the unbonded and bonded post-tensioned timbers compared to the unreinforced beams. Timber that was post-tensioned with an unbonded BFRP tendon showed a flexural strength increase of 2.8% and an increase in stiffness of 8.7%. Post-tensioned beams with a bonded BFRP tendon showed increases in flexural strength and stiffness of 16.6% and 11.5% respectively.

Titanium has good biocompatibility and so its alloys are used as implant materials, but they suffer from having poor wear resistance. This research aims to improve the wear resistance and the tensile strength of titanium alloys potentially for implant applications. Titanium alloys Ti–6Al–4V and Ti–6Al–7Nb were subjected to shotpeening process to study the wear and tensile behavior. An improvement in the wear resistance has been achieved due to surface hardening of these alloys by the process of shotpeening. Surface microhardness of shotpeened Ti–6Al–4V and Ti–6Al–7Nb alloys has increased by 113 and 58 HV(0.5), respectively. After shotpeening, ultimate tensile strength of Ti–6Al–4V increased from 1000 MPa to 1150 MPa, higher than improvement obtained for heat treated titanium specimens. The results confirm that shotpeening pre-treatment improved tensile and sliding wear behavior of Ti–6Al–4V and Ti–6Al–7Nb alloys. In addition, shotpeening increased surface roughness.

Microbial interactions depend on a range of biotic and environmental variables, and are both dynamic and unpredictable. For some purposes, and under defined conditions, it is nevertheless imperative to evaluate the inhibitory efficacy of microbes, such as those with potential as biocontrol agents. We selected six, phylogenetically diverse microbes to determine their ability to inhibit the ascomycete Fusarium
coeruleum, a soil-dwelling pathogen of potato tubers that causes the storage disease dry rot. Interaction assays, where colony development was quantified (for both fungal pathogen and potential control agents), were therefore carried out on solid media. The key parameters that contributed to, and were indicative of, inhibitory efficacy were identified as: fungal growth-rates (i) prior to contact with the biocontrol
agent and (ii) if/once contact with the biocontrol agent was established (i.e. in the zone of mixed
culture), and (iii) the ultimate distance traveled by the fungal mycelium. It was clear that there was no correlation between zones of fungal inhibition and the overall reduction in the extent of fungal colony development. An inhibition coefficient was devised which incorporated the potential contributions of distal inhibition of fungal growth-rate; prevention of mycelium development in the vicinity of the biocontrol
agent; and ability to inhibit plant-pathogen growth-rate in the zone of mixed culture (in a ratio of 2:2:1). The values derived were 84.2 for Bacillus subtilis (QST 713), 74.0 for Bacillus sp. (JC12GB42), 30.7 for Pichia anomala (J121), 19.3 for Pantoea agglomerans (JC12GB34), 13.9 for Pantoea sp. (S09:T:12), and
21.9 (indicating a promotion of fungal growth) for bacterial strain (JC12GB54). This inhibition coefficient, with a theoretical maximum of 100, was consistent with the extent of F. coeruleum-colony development (i.e. area, in cm2) and assays of these biocontrol agents carried out previously against Fusarium
spp., and other fungi. These findings are discussed in relation to the dynamics and inherent complexity of natural ecosystems, and the need to adapt models for use under specific sets of conditions.

Many organic molecules have strong absorption bands which can be accessed by ultraviolet short pulse lasers to produce efficient ionization. This resonant multiphoton ionization scheme has already been exploited as an ionization source in time-of-flight mass spectrometers used for environmental trace analysis. In the present work we quantify the ultimate potential of this technique by measuring absolute ion yields produced from the interaction of 267 nm femtosecond laser pulses with the organic molecules indole and toluene, and gases Xe, N2 and O2. Using multiphoton ionization cross sections extracted from these results, we show that the laser pulse parameters required for real-time detection of aromatic molecules at concentrations of one part per trillion in air and a limit of detection of a few attomoles are achievable with presently available commercial laser systems. The potential applications for the analysis of human breath, blood and tissue samples are discussed.

Male suicide rates are high in Western countries including the US and Canada. Underpinned by men’s resistance to health help-seeking and challenges diagnosing mental illness including male depression, suicide ends the lives of many men amid inflicting pain and grief on the family and friends who are left behind. Fuelled by the discordant relationship between men’s low rates of depression and high rates of suicide we embarked on a unique and novel photovoice study title Man-Up Against Suicide. Specifically, men who have contemplated suicide in the past, and individuals (men and women) who have lost a male partner, family member or friend to suicide were invited to take photographs representing their experiences with men’s suicide with the ultimate goal of messaging ‘at risk’ men that there are alternatives to taking one’s life. Participants subsequently completed semi-structured individual interviews narrating the photographs and providing captions to accompany their selected images. In this presentation we share the preliminary study findings along with some participant photographs and narratives as a means to discussing; 1) men’s experiences of suicidal behaviours and their management strategies; and, 2) how men’s and women’s experiences of losing a male to suicide can de-stigmatize men’s mental illness and raise public awareness about male suicide.

From 1989 to 1994 a series of papers outlined evidence for a brief episode of climate change from arid to humid, and then back to arid, during the Carnian Stage of the late Triassic. This time of climate change was compared to marine and terrestrial biotic changes, mainly extinction and then radiation of flora and fauna. Subsequently termed, albeit incorrectly, the Carnian Pluvial Event (CPE) by successive authors, interest in this episode of climatic change has increased steadily, with new evidence being published as well as several challenges to the theory. The exact nature of this humid episode, whether reflecting widespread precipitation or more local effects, as well as its ultimate cause remains equivocal. Bed-by-bed sampling of the Carnian in the Southern Alps (Dolomites), shows the episode began with a negative carbon isotope excursion that lasted for only part of one ammonoid zone (A. austriacum). However, that the Carnian Humid Episode represents a significantly longer period, both environmentally and biotically, is irrefutable. The evidence is strongest in the European, Middle East, Himalayan, North American and Japanese successions, but not always so clear in South America, Antarctica and Australia. The eruption of the Wrangellia Large Igneous Province and global warming (causing increased evaporation in the Tethyan and Panthalassic oceans) are suggested as causes for the humid episode.

This paper describes a stressed-skin diaphragm approach to the optimal design of the internal frame of a cold-formed steel portal framing system, in conjunction with the effect of semi-rigid joints. Both ultimate and serviceability limit states are considered. Wind load combinations are included. The designs are optimized using a real-coded niching genetic algorithm, in which both discrete and continuous decision variables are processed. For a building with two internal frames, it is shown that the material cost of the internal frame can be reduced by as much as 53%, compared with a design that ignores stressed-skin action.

This paper presents details of a project to support the transition from school to university for engineering students in the UK. The initial phases have already been disseminated by the project collaborators. The background, rationale, objectives and outcomes of this latter phase of the project are presented and specific data from a web-based transition diagnostic is discussed which verifies specific learning issues amongst engineering students enrolling in their first year of study. This prompted further investigations into these specific learning issues, which produced relevant data pertinent to enhancing learning through curriculum reform with the ultimate goal of accommodating the transition from school to university, improving the learning experience and increasing retention.

This paper considers the optimal design of fabricated steel beams for long-span portal frames. The design optimisation takes into account ultimate as well as serviceability limit states, adopting deflection limits recommended by the Steel Construction Institute (SCI). Results for three benchmark frames demonstrate the efficiency of the optimisation methodology. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimise the dimensions of the plates used for the columns, rafters and haunches. Discrete decision variables were adopted for the thickness of the steel plates and continuous variables for the breadth and depth of the plates. Strategies were developed to enhance the performance of the GA including solution space reduction and a hybrid initial population half of which is derived using Latin hypercube sampling. The results show that the proposed GA-based optimisation model generates optimal and near-optimal solutions consistently. A parametric study is then conducted on frames of different spans. A significant variation in weight between fabricated and conventional hot-rolled steel portal frames is shown; for a 50 m span frame, a 14–19% saving in weight was achieved. Furthermore, since Universal Beam sections in the UK come from a discrete section library, the results could also provide overall dimensions of other beams that could be more efficient for portal frames. Eurocode 3 was used for illustrative purposes; any alternative code of practice may be used.
