Aims: Nodal expression of the carcinoembryonic antigen ( CEA), cytokeratin 20 ( CK20), and guanylyl cyclase C ( GCC) genes was measured in tandem in patients with colorectal cancer ( CRC) to assess whether there would be sufficient agreement between these markers in their ability to detect micrometastasis to qualify one of them as a universal marker, and whether frozen and paraffin wax embedded tissues would yield similar results.

Injection-molded short- and long-glass fiber/polyamide 6,6 composites were subjected to tensile tests. To measure the effectiveness of the fibers in reinforcing the composites, a computational approach was employed to compute the fiberâ matrix ISS, orientation factor, reinforcement efficiency, tensile-, and fiber length-related properties. Although the LFCs showed great improvement in fiber characteristics compared to the SFCs, enhancement in tensile properties was small, which is believed to be due to the larger fiber diameter. KellyâTyson model provides good approximation for the computation of ISS and tensile-related properties.

Behavioral effects of a novel anti-inflammatory SEN1176 were investigated. This pyrrolo[3,2-e][1,2,4]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine suppresses amyloid-ß (Aß)1-42-induced macrophage production of nitric oxide, TNF-a, IL-1ß, and IL-6 in a dose-dependent fashion, an activity profile consistent with SEN1176 being a neuroinflammation inhibitor. Using male Sprague-Dawley rats, SEN1176 was examined relative to detrimental behavioral effects induced following bilateral intrahippocampal (IH) injections of aggregated Aß1-42. The rats were trained to respond under an alternating-lever cyclic-ratio (ALCR) schedule of food reinforcement, enabling measurement of parameters of operant performance that reflect aspects of learning and memory. Under the ALCR schedule, orally administered SEN1176 at 5, 20, or 30 mg/kg was effective in reducing the behavioral deficit caused by bilateral IH aggregated Aß1-42 injections in a dose-related manner over a 90-day treatment period. SEN1176 at 20 and 30 mg/kg significantly reduced lever switching errors and, at doses of 5, 10, and 30 mg/kg, significantly reduced incorrect lever perseverations, indicating a reduction of the behavioral deficit induced as a result of inflammation following IH Aß1-42 injections. When treatment with SEN1176 was instigated 30 days after IH Aß1-42 injections, it resulted in progressive protection, and withdrawal of SEN1176 treatment 60 days after IH Aß1-42 injections revealed partial retention of the protective effect. SEN1176 also significantly reduced numbers of activated astrocytes adjacent to the aggregated Aß1-42 injection sites. These results indicate the potential of SEN1176 for alleviating chronic neuroinflammatory processes related to brain Aß deposition that affect learning and memory in Alzheimer's disease.

A novel Class-E power amplifier (PA) topology with transmission-line load network is presented in this brief. When compared with the classic Class-E topology, the new circuit can increase the maximum operating frequency up to 50% higher without trading the other Class-E figures of merit. Neither quarterwave line/massive radio-frequency choke for collector/drain biasing nor additional fundamental-frequency output matching circuit are needed in the proposed PA, thus resulting in a compact design. Closed-form formulations are derived and verified by simulations with practical design limitations carefully taken into consideration and good agreement achieved.

The article highlights new insights into production of thin titania films widely used as catalyst support in many modern reactors including capillary microreactors, microstructured fixed-bed reactors and falling film microreactors. Dip-coating of a Mania sol onto a Si substrate has been studied in the range of the sol viscosities of 1.5-2.5 mPa s and the sol withdrawal rates of 0.2-18 mm/s. Different viscosities of sols were created by addition of desired amounts of nitric acid to the synthesis mixture of titanium isopropoxide and Plutonic F127 in ethanol which allowed to control the rate of the condensation reactions. Uniform inesoporous titania coatings were obtained at the solvent withdrawal rates below 10 mm/s at sol viscosities in the range from 1.6 mPa s to 2.5 mPa s. There exists a limiting withdrawal rate corresponding to a capillary number of ca. 0.01 beyond which uniform titania films cannot be obtained. Below the limiting withdrawal rate, the coating thickness is a power function of the sol viscosity and withdrawal rate, both with an exponent of 2/3. The limiting withdrawal rate increases as the solvent evaporation rate increases and it decreases as the sol viscosity increases. Crown Copyright (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V. A radioreceptor assay was developed for the determination of the p-blocker carazolol in porcine muscle and kidney. The method involves a simple alkaline extraction procedure using diethyl ether followed by a competitive assay between carazolol residues and [H-3]-dihydroalprenolol ([H-3]-DHA) using solubilised beta2-adrenoceptors isolated from a transfected cell line. The limit of detection (LOD) was determined using 20 reference blank samples of pig kidney and pig muscle. LODs for muscle (0.93 mug kg(-1)) and kidney (1.47 mug kg(-1)) were well below their respective European community maximum residue limits, (MRLs 5 and 25 mug kg(-1), respectively). The assay was used to investigate if carazolol residues persisted in pig tissues for up to 30 h post-intramuscular injection at the recommended dose rate (10 mug carazolol/kg body weight). The highest mean +/- S.D. concentrations were detected at 1 h post-injection in kidney (10.84 +/- 1.3 mug kg(-1)) and muscle (3.59 +/- 0.2 mug kg(-1)) which were less than the respective MRLs. It is concluded that this method offers a robust and rapid alternative to other methods for the screening of carazolol residues in pig meat. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A rapid imununoassay using an optical biosensor (BIAcore(TM)) for determining the presence of sulphadiazine (SDZ) residues in pig bile was developed. SDZ,cas immobilised onto the surface of a dextran-coated silicon chip and a solution containing SDZ antibody, sample and buffer was injected over the chip surface. The level of antibody binding to the chip was determined after 20 s and the surface of the chip was then regenerated over a 1-min period prior to another sample injection taking place. Standard curves were constructed to allow quantification of SDZ presence in sample. Concentrations ranging from 0 to 10.64 mu g ml(-1) SDZ were detected in bile samples taken from experimentally fed pigs and randomly selected pigs taken from a local slaughterhouse. These results were compared to the concentrations of SDZ detected by high-performance liquid chromatography: in associated tissues. When concentrations in bile exceeded 0.6 mu g ml(-1) SDZ, the corresponding edible tissue was above the maximum residue level (MRL), i.e. 0.1 mu g g(-1) in 13 out of 14 cases. Wizen the bile concentration was less than 0.6 mu ml(-1) the associated tissue concentrations never exceeded rite MRL. This experiment has indicated that biosensor analysis of bile is a highly effective method for detecting violative SDZ residues in meat.

The possibility of using high-intensity laser-produced plasmas as a source of energetic ions for heavy ion accelerators is addressed. Experiments have shown that neon ions greater than 6 MeV can be produced from gas jet plasmas, and well-collimated proton beams greater than 20 MeV have been produced from high-intensity Laser solid interactions. The proton beams from the back of thin targets appear to be more collimated and reproducible than are high-energy ions generated in the ablated plasma at the front of the target and may be more suitable for ion injection applications. Lead ions have been produced at energies up to 430 MeV.

This output is a collection of compositions which explore issues of ensemble improvisation, ensemble management and orchestration, real-time and distributed scoring, multi-nodal inputs and outputs, and animated and graphic notation. Compositions include: Activities I; tutti, duet, trio, solo, quartet; Lewitt Notations I; Webwork I; and Sometimes I feel the space between people (voices) in terms of tempos. These compositions are presented in computer animated scores which are synchronized through the network and subject to real-time modification and control. They can be performed by ensembles distributed over large physical spaces connected by the network. The scores for these compositions include software which displays the animations to the performers, software to structure and disseminate score events, and triggering software that allows the control of a performance to be distributed. Scores can also include live electronics which are coordinated with graphic events.

A combined geomorphologicalâphysical model approach is used to generate three-dimensional reconstructions of glaciers in Pacific Far NE Russia during the global Last glacial Maximum (gLGM). The horizontal dimensions of these ice masses are delineated by moraines, their surface elevations are estimated using an iterative flowline model and temporal constraints upon their margins are derived from published age estimates. The equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) of these ice masses are estimated, and gLGM climate is reconstructed using a simple degreeâday melt model. The results indicate that, during the gLGM, ice masses occupying the Pekulney, Kankaren and Sredinny mountains of Pacific Far NE Russia were of valley glacier and ice field type. These glaciers were
between 7 and 80 km in length, and were considerably less extensive than during pre-LGM phases of advance. gLGM ice masses in these regions had ELAs of between 575± 22m and 1035±41m (above sea level) â corresponding to an ELA depression of 350â740 m, relative to present. Data indicate that, in the Pekulney Mountains, this ELA depression occurred because of a 6.48°C reduction
in mean July temperature, and 200mm a¯¹ reduction in precipitation, relative to present. Thus reconstructions support a restricted view of gLGM glaciation in Pacific Far NE Russia and indicate that the regionâs aridity precluded the development of large continental ice sheets.
