The pH-dependent fluorescence behavior of two regioisomeric 'receptor(1)-spacer(1)-fluorophore-spacer(2)-receptor(2)' systems 1 and 2 in micellar solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate show that photoinduced electron transfer (PET) only occurs from the amine group connected to the 4-amino position of the aminonaphthalimide fluorophore in both cases. This demonstrates the directing influence of the photogenerated electric field within the aminonaphthalimide excited state on the electron transfer process. Since path-selectivity of PET is also known within the membrane-bound photosynthetic reaction center in bacteria, its origins may be illuminated by the simple experiments described here. For a better understanding of the adsorption behavior of alkylcarbonate-based electrolytes on graphite electrodes and Celgard separator for Li-ion batteries applications, the interface parameters are determined by contact angle and surface tension measurements. The correlation between these parameters and chemical compositions made of alkyl carbonate with a varying nature of lithium salts (LiPF6 and LiTFSI) and volume fractions of binary and ternary mixtures containing propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC), and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is investigated. From the obtained contact angle and surface tension (?L) values for each liquid, the dispersive and polar components of the surface tension (?Ld and ?Lp) of the electrolyte and interfacial free energy between the solid and liquid (?SL) were then calculated using the Young’s equation. The variation of contact angle (?) and the surface tension, as well as the work of adhesion (WA) of binary PC/DMC mixtures on PP, PE, and PET model surfaces were also measured and commented as function of volume fraction of PC in DMC. Finally, the Zisman’s critical surface tension (?C) for studied surfaces was then obtained showing positives slopes of cos ? versus ?L. This behavior is explained by a relative higher adsorption of alkylcarbonates to the hydrogenated supports or graphite. These results are decisive to understand the performance of electrolyte/electrode material/separator interfaces in lithium-ion battery devices.

This paper presents a new algorithm for learning the structure of a special type of Bayesian network. The conditional phase-type (C-Ph) distribution is a Bayesian network that models the probabilistic causal relationships between a skewed continuous variable, modelled by the Coxian phase-type distribution, a special type of Markov model, and a set of interacting discrete variables. The algorithm takes a dataset as input and produces the structure, parameters and graphical representations of the fit of the C-Ph distribution as output. The algorithm, which uses a greedy-search technique and has been implemented in MATLAB, is evaluated using a simulated data set consisting of 20,000 cases. The results show that the original C-Ph distribution is recaptured and the fit of the network to the data is discussed.

Hopanoids are pentacyclic triterpenoids that are thought to be bacterial surrogates for eukaryotic sterols, such as cholesterol, acting to stabilize membranes and to regulate their fluidity and permeability. To date, very few studies have evaluated the role of hopanoids in bacterial physiology. The synthesis of hopanoids depends on the enzyme squalene-hopene cyclase (Shc), which converts the linear squalene into the basic hopene structure. Deletion of the 2 genes encoding Shc enzymes in Burkholderia cenocepacia K56-2, BCAM2831 and BCAS0167, resulted in a strain that was unable to produce hopanoids, as demonstrated by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Complementation of the Delta shc mutant with only BCAM2831 was sufficient to restore hopanoid production to wild-type levels, while introducing a copy of BCAS0167 alone into the Delta shc mutant produced only very small amounts of the hopanoid peak. The Delta shc mutant grew as well as the wild type in medium buffered to pH 7 and demonstrated no defect in its ability to survive and replicate within macrophages, despite transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealing defects in the organization of the cell envelope. The Delta shc mutant displayed increased sensitivity to low pH, detergent, and various antibiotics, including polymyxin B and erythromycin. Loss of hopanoid production also resulted in severe defects in both swimming and swarming motility. This suggests that hopanoid production plays an important role in the physiology of B. cenocepacia.

Conditional Gaussian (CG) distributions allow the inclusion of both discrete and continuous variables in a model assuming that the continuous variable is normally distributed. However, the CG distributions have proved to be unsuitable for survival data which tends to be highly skewed. A new method of analysis is required to take into account continuous variables which are not normally distributed. The aim of this paper is to introduce the more appropriate conditional phase-type (C-Ph) distribution for representing a continuous non-normal variable while also incorporating the causal information in the form of a Bayesian network.

Twenty-four-hour pH monitoring is the 'gold standard' investigation of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. It has been suggested that results may be influenced by lifestyle alteration during the study. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of lifestyle alteration and anxiety on outcome in pH monitoring.
