Populations of many freshwater species are becoming increasingly threatened as a result of a wide range of anthropogenically mediated factors. In the present study, we wanted to assess levels and patterns of genetic diversity in Ireland's sole population of the River water crowfoot (Ranunculus fluitans), which is restricted to a 12 km stretch of a single river, to assist the formation of conservation strategies. Analysis using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) indicated comparable levels of genetic diversity to those exhibited by a more extensive population of the species in England, and revealed no evidence of clonal reproduction. Allele-specific PCR analysis of five nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) indicated no evidence of hybridization with its more abundant congener Ranunculus penicillatus, despite previous anecdotal reports of the occurrence of hybrids. Although the population currently exhibits healthy levels of genetic diversity and is not at risk of genetic assimilation via hybridization with R. penicillatus, it still remains vulnerable to other factors such as stochastic events and invasive species. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Polypropylene sheets have been stretched at 160 °C to a state of large biaxial strain of extension ratio 3, and the stresses then allowed to relax at constant strain. The state of strain is reached via a path consisting of two sequential planar extensions, the second perpendicular to the first, under plane stress conditions with zero stress acting normal to the sheet. This strain path is highly relevant to solid phase deformation processes such as stretch blow moulding and thermoforming, and also reveals fundamental aspects of the flow rule required in the constitutive behaviour of the material. The rate of decay of stress is rapid, and such as to be highly significant in the modelling of processes that include stages of constant strain. A constitutive equation is developed that includes Eyring processes to model both the stress relaxation and strain rate dependence of the stress. The axial and transverse stresses observed during loading show that the use of a conventional Levy-Mises flow rule is ineffective, and instead a flow rule is used that takes account of the anisotropic state of the material via a power law function of the principal extension ratios. Finally the constitutive model is demonstrated to give quantitatively useful representation of the stresses both in loading and in stress relaxation.

The purpose of this study was to examine the behavioural responses of infants to pain stimuli across different developmental ages. Eighty infants were included in this cross-sectional design. Four subsamples of 20 infants each included: (1) premature infants between 32 and 34 weeks gestational age undergoing heel-stick procedure; (2) full-term infants receiving intramuscular vitamin K injection; (3) 2-month-old infants receiving subcutaneous injection for immunisation against DPT; and (4) 4-month-old infants receiving subcutaneous injection for immunisation against DPT. Audio and video recordings were made for 15 sec from stimulus. Cry analysis was conducted on the first full expiratory cry by FFT with time and frequency measures. Facial action was coded using the Neonatal Facial Action Coding System (NFCS). Results from multivariate analysis showed that premature infants were different from older infants, that full-term newborns were different from others, but that 2- and 4-month-olds were similar. The specific variables contributing to the significance were higher pitched cries and more horizontal mouth stretch in the premature group and more taut tongue in the full-term newborns. The results imply that the premature infant has the basis for communicating pain via facial actions but that these are not well developed. The full-term newborn is better equipped to interact with his caretakers and express his distress through specific facial actions. The cries of the premature infant, however, have more of the characteristics that are arousing to the listener which serve to alert the caregiver of the state of distress from pain.

We demonstrate a novel way to actively tune surface plasmons by fabricating plasmonic nanostructures on stretchable elastomeric films. This allows reversible modification of the metal geometry on the nanometer scale. Using 100 nm scale Au nanoparticle dimers whose spacing is stretch-tuned reveals radically different spectral tuning than previously reported for sub-10-nm nanoparticles, but which can be explained by a revised interpretation of existing models. Tuning plasmons in this way offers a much more robust way than lithography to interrogate the physics of localized plasmons and has applications in optimized surface-enhanced luminescence and Raman scattering.

A comparative study of CO electrooxidation on different catalysts using in situ FTIR spectroscopy is presented. As electrode materials, polycrystalline Pt and Ru and a PtRu (50:50) alloy are used. The latter is one of the well-known active alloys for CO oxidation. The potential dependence of the band frequencies for the CO stretch indicates the formation of relatively compact islands at pure Pt and Ru, and a loose adlayer structure at the alloy. This loose structure has a positive effect on the rate of oxidative desorption. CO submonolayer coverages are obtained by integrating the absorption bands for CO produced upon oxidation of adsorbed CO. The band intensities measured at Pt, Ru, and PtRu indicate an influence of the substrate on the absorption coefficient of the CO stretch. It is shown that for a correct description of the catalyst properties toward CO electrooxidation, it must be distinguished between bulk and adsorbed CO. In contrast to the statement of most of the recent papers that a PtRu alloy (50:50) is the material with the highest activity for CO oxidation, it is demonstrated and rationalized in the present paper that for bulk CO oxidation pure Ru is the best catalyst. © 1999 American Chemical Society.

Background: Barrett's oesophagus (BO) is a well recognized precursor of the majority of cases of oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC). Endoscopic surveillance of BO patients is frequently undertaken in an attempt to detect early OAC, high grade dysplasia (HGD) or low grade dysplasia (LGD). However histological interpretation and grading of dysplasia is subjective and poorly reproducible. The alternative flow cytometry and cytology-preparation image cytometry techniques require large amounts of tissue and specialist expertise which are not widely available for frontline health care.
Methods: This study has combined whole slide imaging with DNA image cytometry, to provide a novel method for the detection and quantification of abnormal DNA contents. 20 cases were evaluated, including 8 Barrett's specialised intestinal metaplasia (SIM), 6 LGD and 6 HGD. Feulgen stained oesophageal sections (1µm thickness) were digitally scanned in their entirety and evaluated to select regions of interests and abnormalities. Barrett’s mucosa was then interactively chosen for automatic nuclei segmentation where irrelevant cell types are ignored. The combined DNA content histogram for all selected image regions was then obtained. In addition, histogram measurements, including 5c exceeding ratio (xER-5C), 2c deviation index (2cDI) and DNA grade of malignancy (DNA-MG), were computed.
Results: The histogram measurements, xER-5C, 2cDI and DNA-MG, were shown to be effective in differentiating SIM from HGD, SIM from LGD, and LGD from HGD. All three measurements discriminated SIM from HGD cases successfully with statistical significance (pxER-5C=0.0041, p2cDI=0.0151 and pDNA-MG=0.0057). Statistical significance is also achieved differentiating SIM from LGD samples with pxER-5C=0.0019, p2cDI=0.0023 and pDNA-MG=0.0030. Furthermore the differences between LGD and HGD cases are statistical significant (pxER-5C=0.0289, p2cDI=0.0486 and pDNA-MG=0.0384).
Conclusion: Whole slide image cytometry is a novel and effective method for the detection and quantification of abnormal DNA content in BO. Compared to manual histological review, this proposed method is more objective and reproducible. Compared to flow cytometry and cytology-preparation image cytometry, the current method is low cost, simple to use and only requires a single 1µm tissue section. Whole slide image cytometry could assist the routine clinical diagnosis of dysplasia in BO, which is relevant for future progression risk to OAC.

A practical machine-vision-based system is developed for fast detection of defects occurring on the surface of bottle caps. This system can be used to extract the circular region as the region of interests (ROI) from the surface of a bottle cap, and then use the circular region projection histogram (CRPH) as the matching features. We establish two dictionaries for the template and possible defect, respectively. Due to the requirements of high-speed production as well as detecting quality, a fast algorithm based on a sparse representation is proposed to speed up the searching. In the sparse representation, non-zero elements in the sparse factors indicate the defect's size and position. Experimental results in industrial trials show that the proposed method outperforms the orientation code method (OCM) and is able to produce promising results for detecting defects on the surface of bottle caps.

We consider the problem of self-healing in reconfigurable networks e.g., peer-to-peer and wireless mesh networks. For such networks under repeated attack by an omniscient adversary, we propose a fully distributed algorithm, Xheal, that maintains good expansion and spectral properties of the network, while keeping the network connected. Moreover, Xheal does this while allowing only low stretch and degree increase per node. The algorithm heals global properties like expansion and stretch while only doing local changes and using only local information. We also provide bounds on the second smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian which captures key properties such as mixing time, conductance, congestion in routing etc. Xheal has low amortized latency and bandwidth requirements. Our work improves over the self-healing algorithms Forgiving tree [PODC 2008] andForgiving graph [PODC 2009] in that we are able to give guarantees on degree and stretch, while at the same time preserving the expansion and spectral properties of the network.

Healing algorithms play a crucial part in distributed peer-to-peer networks where failures occur continuously and frequently. Whereas there are approaches for robustness that rely largely on built-in redundancy, we adopt a responsive approach that is more akin to that of biological networks e.g. the brain. The general goal of self-healing distributed graphs is to maintain certain network properties while recovering from failure quickly and making bounded alterations locally. Several self-healing algorithms have been suggested in the recent literature [IPDPS'08, PODC'08, PODC'09, PODC'11]; they heal various network properties while fulfilling competing requirements such as having low degree increase while maintaining connectivity, expansion and low stretch of the network. In this work, we augment the previous algorithms by adding the notion of edge-preserving self-healing which requires the healing algorithm to not delete any edges originally present or adversarialy inserted. This reflects the cost of adding additional edges but more importantly it immediately follows that edge preservation helps maintain any subgraph induced property that is monotonic, in particular important properties such as graph and subgraph densities. Density is an important network property and in certain distributed networks, maintaining it preserves high connectivity among certain subgraphs and backbones. We introduce a general model of self-healing, and introduce xheal+, an edge-preserving version of xheal[PODC'11]. © 2012 IEEE.

Russia has very high mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD), with evidence that heavy drinking may play a role. To throw further light on this association we have studied the association of alcohol with predictors of CVD risk including B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). Levels of BNP increase primarily in response to abnormal cardiac chamber wall stretch which can occur both as a result of atherosclerosis as well as due to other types of damage to the myocardium. No previous population-based studies have investigated the association with alcohol. We analysed cross-sectional data on drinking behaviour in 993 men aged 25-60 years from the Izhevsk Family Study 2 (IFS2), conducted in the Russian city of Izhevsk in 2008-2009. Relative to non-drinkers, men who drank hazardously had an odds ratio (OR) of being in the top 20 % of the BNP distribution of 4.66 (95 % CI 2.13, 10.19) adjusted for age, obesity, waist-hip ratio, and smoking. Further adjustment for class of hypertension resulted in only slight attenuation of the effect, suggesting that this effect was not secondary to the influence of alcohol on blood pressure. In contrast hazardous drinking was associated with markedly raised ApoA1 and HDL cholesterol levels, but had little impact on levels of ApoB and LDL cholesterol. Similar but less pronounced associations were found in the Belfast (UK) component of the PRIME study conducted in 1991. These findings suggest that the association of heavy drinking with increased risk of cardiovascular disease may be partly due to alcohol-induced non-atherosclerotic damage to the myocardium.

Rice (Oryza sativa) cultivar Azucena--belonging to the Japonica subspecies--exudes high strigolactone (SL) levels and induces high germination of the root parasitic plant Striga hermonthica. Consistent with the fact that SLs also inhibit shoot branching, Azucena is a low-tillering variety. In contrast, Bala, an Indica cultivar, is a low-SL producer, stimulates less Striga germination, and is highly tillered. Using a Bala × Azucena F6 population, a major quantitative trait loci--qSLB1.1--for the exudation of SL, tillering, and induction of Striga germination was detected on chromosome 1. Sequence analysis of the corresponding locus revealed a rearrangement of a 51- to 59-kbp stretch between 28.9 and 29 Mbp in the Bala genome, resulting in the deletion of two cytochrome P450 genes--SLB1 and SLB2--with high homology to the Arabidopsis SL biosynthesis gene, MAX1. Both rice genes rescue the Arabidopsis max1-1 highly branched mutant phenotype and increase the production of the SL, ent-2'-epi-5-deoxystrigol, when overexpressed in Bala. Furthermore, analysis of this region in 367 cultivars of the publicly available Rice Diversity Panel population shows that the rearrangement at this locus is a recurrent natural trait associated with the Indica/Japonica divide in rice.

Article 4(2) TEU requires that the European Union (EU) respect the Member States’ national identities, creating a legal obligation enforceable before the CJEU and valuable in political negotiations. However, the concept of national identities is unclear, leaving open questions about the scope or parameters of the provision and its applicability. The CJEU appears likely to take a relatively flexible approach in light of Article 4(2) TEU’s relationship with national constitutional courts’ reserves. This flexible approach would enable Member States to rely upon a range of aspects as part of their national identity, including ones that were previously unidentified. This is a crucial feature if one considers that national identities may evolve gradually or even dramatically, including where Member States purposefully attempt to develop their national identities further. This possibility of an evolved national identity is exemplified by the French Charte de l’Environnement. It may thereby be possible for Member States to stretch the scope and application of Article 4(2) TEU through reference to these evolving national identities. This potential raises significant challenges for the EU regarding the management of Article 4(2) TEU, which it will need to address if it wishes to ensure harmonisation and uniformity in the relevant areas.

AIMS: To determine the incidence and predictive factors of rib fracture and chest wall pain after lung stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were treated with lung SABR of 48-60 Gy in four to five fractions. The treatment plan and follow-up computed tomography scans of 289 tumours in 239 patients were reviewed. Dose-volume histogram (DVH) metrics and clinical factors were evaluated as potential predictors of chest wall toxicity.
RESULTS: The median follow-up was 21.0 months (range 6.2-52.1). Seventeen per cent (50/289) developed a rib fracture, 44% (22/50) were symptomatic; the median time to fracture was 16.4 months. On univariate analysis, female gender, osteoporosis, tumours adjacent (within 5 mm) to the chest wall and all of the chest wall DVH metrics predicted for rib fracture, but only tumour location adjacent to the chest wall remained significant on the multivariate model (P < 0.01). The 2 year fracture-free probability for those adjacent to the chest wall was 65.6%. Among those tumours adjacent to the chest wall, only osteoporosis (P = 0.02) predicted for fracture, whereas none of the chest wall DVH metrics were predictive. Eight per cent (24/289) experienced chest wall pain without fracture.
CONCLUSIONS: None of the chest wall DVH metrics independently predicted for SABR-induced rib fracture when tumour location is taken into account. Patients with tumours adjacent (within 5 mm) to the chest wall are at greater risk of rib fracture after lung SABR, and among these, an additional risk was observed in osteoporotic patients.

AIMS: Modern radiotherapy uses techniques to reliably identify tumour and reduce target volume margins. However, this can potentially lead to an increased risk of geographic miss. One source of error is the accuracy of target volume delineation (TVD). Colleague peer review (CPR) of all curative-intent lung cancer plans has been mandatory in our institution since May 2013. At least two clinical oncologists review plans, checking treatment paradigm, TVD, prescription dose tumour and critical organ tolerances. We report the impact of CPR in our institution.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Radiotherapy treatment plans of all patients receiving radical radiotherapy were presented at weekly CPR meetings after their target volumes were reviewed and signed off by the treating consultant. All cases and any resultant change to TVD (including organs at risk) or treatment intent were recorded in our prospective CPR database. The impact of CPR over a 13 month period from May 2013 to June 2014 is reported.
RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-two patients (63% non-small cell lung carcinoma, 17% small cell lung carcinoma and 20% 'clinical diagnosis') were analysed. On average, 3.2 cases were discussed per meeting (range 1-8). CPR resulted in a change in treatment paradigm in 3% (one patient proceeded to induction chemotherapy, two patients had high-dose palliative radiotherapy). Twenty-one (17%) had a change in TVD and one (1%) patient had a change in dose prescription. In total, 6% of patients had plan adjustment after review of dose volume histogram.
CONCLUSION: The introduction of CPR in our centre has resulted in a change in a component of the treatment plan for 27% of patients receiving curative-intent lung radiotherapy. We recommend CPR as a mandatory quality assurance step in the planning process of all radical lung plans.
