The ductility of concrete made with commercially available steel and synthetic fibres has been investigated. Flexural stress–deflection relationships have been used to determine: flexural strength, flexural toughness, equivalent flexural strength, and equivalent flexural strength ratio. The flexural toughness of concrete was found to increase considerably when steel and synthetic fibres were used. However, equal dosages of different fibres did not result in specimens with the same flexural toughness. Flexural toughness differences of almost 35 J existed even at the same fibre dosage. This also resulted in considerable differences in the minimum required ground supported slab thickness.

There has been an increasing highlight of supply chain collaboration in UK construction. However, few studies have provided evidence for the current status. Based on the analysis of over 100 questionnaire responses in this research, it is found that the UK construction industry as a whole is experiencing an important change and moving towards supply chain collaboration. On the other hand, an unbalance is found for the change movement. In addition to the questionnaire survey, a series of expert interviews help to explore the specific characteristics of supply chain collaboration in construction and provide practical implications for collaboration strategy implementation.

The objective of this research was to optimise the rheological parameters, hardened properties, and setting times of cement grouts containing metakaolin (MTK), viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) and superplasticiser (SP). All mixes were made with water-to-binder ratio (W/B) of 0.40. The replacement of cement by MTK was varied from 6% to 20% (by mass), and dosages of SP and VMA were varied from 0.3% to 1.4%, and 0.01% and 0.06% (by mass of binder), respectively. Increased SP led to an increase in fluidity, reduction in flow time, plate cohesion, rheological parameters, and an increase in the setting times. Increased VMA demonstrated a reduction in fluidity, an increase in Marsh cone time, plate cohesion, yield stress, and plastic viscosity. Results indicate that the use of MTK increased yield stress, plastic viscosity, cohesion plate, and flow time due to the higher surface area associated with an increase in the water demand. MTK reduced mini-slump and setting times, and improved compressive strength.

Milton’s Elegiarum Liber, the first half of his Poemata published in Poems of Mr John Milton Both English and Latin (1645), concludes with a series of eight Latin epigrams: five bitterly anti-Catholic pieces on the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, followed by three encomiastic poems hymning the praises of an Italian soprano, Leonora Baroni, singing in Catholic Rome. The disparity in terms of subject matter and tone is self-evident yet surprising in an epigrammatic series that runs sequentially. Whereas the gunpowder epigrams denigrate Rome, the Leonora epigrams present the city as a cultured hub of inclusivity, the welcome host of a Neapolitan soprano. In providing the setting for a human song that both enthrals its audience and attests to the presence of a divine power, Rome now epitomizes something other than brute idolatry, clerical habit or doctrine. And for the poet this facilitates an interrogation of theological (especially Catholic) doctrines. Coelum non animum muto, dum trans mare curro wrote the homeward-bound Milton in the autograph book of Camillo Cardoini at Geneva on 10 June 1639. But that this was an animus that could indeed acclimatize to religious and cultural difference is suggested by the Latin poems which Milton “patch [ed] up” in the course of his Italian journey. Central to that acclimatisation, as this chapter argues, is Milton’s quasi-Catholic self-fashioning. Thus Mansus offers a poetic autobiography of sorts, a self-inscribed vita coloured by intertextually kaleidoscopic links with two Catholic poets of Renaissance Italy and their patron; Ad Leonoram 1 both invokes and interrogates Catholic doctrine before a Catholic audience only to view the whole through the lens of a neo-Platonic hermeticism that may refreshingly transcend religious difference. Finally, Epitaphium Damonis, composed upon Milton’s return home, seems to highlight the potential interconnectedness of Protestant England and Catholic Italy, through the Anglo-Italian identity of its deceased subject, and through a pseudo-monasticism suggested by the poem’s possible engagement with the hagiography of a Catholic Saint. Perhaps continental travel and the physical encounter with the symbols, personages and institutions of the other have engendered in the Milton of the Italian journey a tolerance or, more accurately, the manipulation of a seeming tolerance to serve poetic and cultural ends.

First reviewer:
Haan: a fine piece by the senior neo-Latinist in Milton studies.

Second reviewer:
Chapter 7 is ... a high-spot of the collection. Its argument that in his Latin poetry Milton’s is a ‘quasi-Catholic self-fashioning’ stressing ‘the potential interconnectedness of Protestant England and Catholic Italy’ is striking and is advanced with learning, clarity and insight. Its sensitive exploration of the paradox of Milton’s coupling of humanistically complimentary and tolerant address to Roman Catholic friends with fiercely Protestant partisanship demonstrates that there is much greater complexity to his poetic persona than the self-construction and self-presentation of the later works would suggest. The essay is always adroit and sure-footed, often critically acute and illuminating (as, for example, in its discussion of the adjective and adverb mollis and molliter in Mansus, or in the identification in n. 99 of hitherto unnoticed Virgilian echoes). It has the added merits of being very well written, precise and apt in its citation of evidence, and absolutely central to the concerns of the volume.

This paper examines the applicability of a digital manufacturing framework to the implementation of a Value Driven Design (VDD) approach for the development of a stiffened composite panel. It presents a means by which environmental considerations can be integrated with conventional product and process design drivers within a customized, digital environment. A composite forming process is used as an exemplar for the work which creates a collaborative environment for the integration of more traditional design drivers with parameters related to manufacturability as well as more sustainable processes and products. The environmental stakeholder is introduced to the VDD process through a customized product/process/resource (PPR) environment where application specific power consumption and material waste data has been measured and characterised in the process design interface. This allows the manufacturing planner to consider power consumption as a concurrent design driver and the inclusion of energy as a parameter in a VDD approach to the development of efficiently manufactured, sustainable transport systems.

Increasing energy consumption has exerted great pressure on natural resources; this has led to a move towards sustainable energy resources to improve security of supply and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the rush to the cure may have been made in haste. Biofuels in particular, have a bad press both in terms of competition with good agricultural land for food, and also in terms of the associated energy balance with the whole life cycle analysis of the biofuel system. The emphasis is now very much on sustainable biofuel production; biofuels from wastes and lignocellulosic material are now seen as good sustainable biofuels that affect significantly better greenhouse gas balances as compared with first generation biofuels. Ireland has a significant resource of organic waste that could be a potential source of energy through anaerobic digestion. Ireland has 8% of the cattle population of the EU with less than 1% of the human population; as a result 91% of agricultural land in Ireland is under grass. Residues such as slurries and slaughter waste together with energy crops such as grass have an excellent potential to produce biogas that may be upgraded to biomethane. This biomethane may be used as a natural gas substitute; bio-compressed natural gas may then be an avenue for a biofuel strategy. It is estimated that a maximum potential of 33% of natural gas may be substituted by 2020 with a practical obtainable level of 7.5% estimated. Together with biodiesel from residues the practical obtainable level of this strategy may effect greater than a 5% substitution by energy of transport. The residues considered in this strategy to produce biofuel (excluding grass) have the potential to save 93,000 ha of agricultural land (23% of Irish arable land) when compared to a rapeseed biodiesel strategy. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Nabile Farès is a key author within postcolonial studies, due in particular to his uniquely expressive writing style. This article discusses writing style in his 1982 text, L’état perdu: précédé du discours pratique de l’immigré. Throughout the mainly French text, different alphabets are woven, alluding to the complexity of Algerian linguistic history and the importance of language in the construction and expression of identity. Meanwhile, the grammar and structure of the French language seems confused and at times illogical, raising further questions about use of a colonial language in a postcolonial context. Farès’s writing style is avant-garde in nature, and deliberate intertextuality with the Surrealists situates the text within an avant-garde tradition in the French language, developing new ideas surrounding the effect of this written genre in the aftermath of colonialism.

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on compressive strength of unfired compressed brick obtained with coal combustion residues (CCRs) produced by the Niger Coal Society. Preliminary physical and optical (XRD and SEM) characterisation of coal slag, including lixiviation tests, have been carried out. Cement powder, lateritic clayey soil and sand have been chosen as stabilizing agents for bricks. 12 dosages have been tested and about 300 bricks have been produced with a hand-operated press. Results show uniaxial compressive strengths (UCSs) ranging from 4 MPa to 27 MPa for the highest cement stabilisation ratio. UCS higher than 7.5 MPa have been observed for stabilisation with 20% of laterite +10% cement after 45 days of curing. Obtained bricks showed good mechanical resistance and low weight. No health threat has been detected for the obtained samples. Study developments are oriented towards the analysis of Pozzolanic properties of CCRs, properties of hydrated lime stabilisation, thermal properties and durability assessment.© 2012 Elsevier Ltd. While on site measurement of air permeability provides a useful approach for assessing the likely long term durability of concrete structures, no existing test method is capable of effectively determining the relative permeability of high performance concrete (HPC). Lack of instrument sensitivity and the influence of concrete moisture are proposed as two key reasons for this phenomenon. With limited systematic research carried out in this area to date, the aim if this study was to investigate the influence of instrument sensitivity and moisture condition on air permeability measurements for both normal concrete and HPC. To achieve a range of moisture conditions, samples were dried initially for between one and 5 weeks and then sealed in polythene sheeting and stored in an oven at 50 C to internally distribute moisture evenly. Moisture distribution was determined throughout using relative humidity probe and electrical resistance measurements. Concrete air permeability was subsequently measured using standardised air permeability (Autoclam) and water penetration (BS EN: 12390-8) tests to assess differences between the HPCs tested in this study. It was found that for both normal and high performance concrete, the influence of moisture on Autoclam air permeability results could be eliminated by pre-drying (50 ± 1 C, RH 35%) specimens for 3 weeks. While drying for 5 weeks alone was found not to result in uniform internal moisture distributions, this state was achieved by exposing specimens to a further 3 weeks of sealed pre-conditioning at 50 ± 1 C. While the Autoclam test was not able to accurately identify relative HPC quality due to low sensitivity at associated performance levels, an effective preconditioning procedure to obtain reliable air permeability of HPC concretes was identified. © 2013 The Authors

This paper reports on a longitudinal study that examines how a national reform introduced in England in the field of adult literacy, language, and numeracy is affecting teachers. The paper focuses on the use of a mixed methodology to explore teachers' attitudes to the reform and how these change over time. The quantitative strand includes the construction and use of a Likert-type instrument for measuring the attitudes of a panel of 1,500 teachers. The qualitative strand builds on the quantitative results and includes focus groups and in-depth interviews with a subsample of teachers in the panel. As the study is still in its initial phase, the purpose is not to present findings, but to discuss how quantitative and qualitative evidence can be combined in evaluation research.
