The objective of this work was to study the influence of changing the cation of the ionic liquid (IL) on gas solubility. For this purpose, the low-pressure solubility of carbon dioxide and of ethane in three ILs based on the bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide anion ([NTf2](-)) was determined experimentally. Solubility data is reported for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C(1)C(2)Im](+)), 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium ([C(1)C(4)pyrr](+)) and propylcholinium ([N1132-OH](+)) bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide ILs between 300 and 345 K. These data are precise to within +/- 1% and accurate to within +/- 5%. In these ILs, carbon dioxide (mole fraction solubility between 1 and 3 x 10(-2), molarity between 0.03 and 0.1 mol L-1) is one order of magnitude more soluble than ethane. The effect of changing the cation is small but significant. Changing the cation has a similar effect on both gases even if the differences are more pronounced in the case of ethane with the order of solubility [C(1)C(4)pyrr][NTf2] > [C(1)C(2)Im][NTf2] > [N1132-OH][NTf2]. For all the systems, the solubility decreases with temperature corresponding to exothermic processes of solvation and negative enthalpies and entropies of solvation were calculated. The properties of solvation of the two gases in [C(1)C(4)pyrr][NTf2] do not vary significantly with temperature while important variations are depicted for both gases in [C(1)C(2)Im][NTf2]. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation is the keystone for molecular dynamics simulations of radiation damage processes; however, actual materials response involves nonadiabatic energy exchange between nuclei and electrons. In this work, time dependent density functional theory is used to calculate the electronic excitations produced by energetic protons in Al. We study the influence of these electronic excitations on the interatomic forces and find that they differ substantially from the adiabatic case, revealing a nontrivial connection between electronic and nuclear stopping that is absent in the adiabatic case. These results unveil new effects in the early stages of radiation damage cascades.

Q methodology was used to enable the identification of discourses among stakeholders to the environmental and resource dimensions of sustainability policies and to gain an understanding of the usefulness of Q methodology in informing sustainability policy development. The application of Q methodology has been useful in identifying shared discourses between different stakeholder groups, and providing insights into how stakeholders frame or understand policy issues; and recommendations are made for ongoing research priorities. These insights, in turn, informed the choice of scenarios for an in parallel process of policy evaluation using Ecological and Carbon Footprinting.

A high performance VLSI architecture to perform combined multiply-accumulate, divide, and square root operations is proposed. The circuit is highly regular, requires only minimal control, and can be pipelined right down to the bit level. The system can also be reconfigured on every cycle to perform one or more of these operations. The throughput rate for each operation is the same and is wordlength independent. This is achieved using redundant arithmetic. With current CMOS technology, throughput rates in excess of 80 million operations per second are expected.

The long-term success of arterial bypass grafting with autologous saphenous veins is limited by neointimal hyperplasia (NIH), which seemingly develops preferentially at sites where hydrodynamic wall shear is low. Placement of a loose-fitting, porous stent around end-to-end, or end-to-side, autologous saphenous vein grafts on the porcine common carotid artery has been found significantly to reduce NIH, but the mechanism is unclear. In a preliminary study, we implanted autologous saphenous vein grafts bilaterally on the common carotid arteries of pigs, placing a stent around one graft and leaving the contralateral graft unstented. At sacrifice 1 month post implantation, the grafts were pressure fixed in situ and resin casts were made. Unstented graft geometry was highly irregular, with non-uniform dilatation, substantial axial lengthening, curvature, kinking, and possible long-pitch helical distortion. In contrast, stented grafts showed no major dilatation, lengthening or curvature, but there was commonly fine corrugation, occasional slight kinking or narrowing of segments, and possible long-pitch helical distortion. Axial growth of grafts against effectively tethered anastomoses could account for these changes. CFD studies are planned, using 3D MR reconstructions, on the effects of graft geometry on the flow. Abnormality of the flow could favour the development of vascular pathology, including NIH.

Pretensioned concrete members are designed and manufactured by using at least two materials: concrete and prestressing reinforcement. Also, two main stages must be considered: prestress transfer and member loading. Hence, the behavior of these members depends strongly on the reinforcement-to-concrete bond performance and prestress losses. In this paper, a testing technique to measure the specific parameters related with the involved phenomena is presented. The testing technique is based on the analysis of series of specimens varying in embedment length to simulate several cross sections at only one end of a pretensioned concrete member. Each specimen is characterized by means of the sequential release of the prestress transfer (detensioning) and the pull-out (loading) operation. The test provides data on prestressing force, transmission length (initial and long-term), anchorage length (without and with slip), reinforcement slips, bond stresses, longitudinal concrete strains, concrete modulus of elasticity, and prestress losses (instantaneous and time-dependent).

We examine the impact of primary and secondary interference on opportunistic relaying in cognitive spectrum sharing networks. In particular, new closed-form exact and asymptotic expressions for the outage probability of cognitive opportunistic relaying are derived over Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading channels. Our analysis presents revealing insights into the diversity and array gains, diversity-multiplexing tradeoff, impact of primary transceivers' positions, and the optimal position of relays. We highlight that cognitive opportunistic relaying achieves the full diversity gain which is a product of the number of relays and the minimum Nakagami-m fading parameter in the secondary network. Furthermore, we confirm that the diversity gain reduces to zero when the peak interference constraint in the secondary network is proportional to the interference power from the primary network.
