The use of new mobile technologies is still in its infancy in many secondary schools and there is limited evidence of the educational and pedagogical benefits on pupilsâ learning in the formal school context. This qualitative study focuses on the use of handheld devices to teach a topic in geography to an examination class. Action research combined with pupil observations and focus group interviews are used to capture the pupilsâ experiences of using mediascapes. Activity Theory is used as a lens to structure the analysis of the data and to report on the cognitive and affective impact of m-learning on pupilsâ academic performance in the topic. Increased attainment and the development of wider skills for lifelong learning were identified in the study. The adaptability of the majority of pupils to the technology resulted in increased levels of willingness to learn in this novel context.

To examine the prevalence and pattern of specific areas of learning disability (LD) in neurologically normal children with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) (<or = 800 g) who have broadly average intelligence compared with full-term children with normal birth weight of comparable sociodemographic background, and to explore concurrent cognitive correlates of the specific LDs.

Purpose: To describe a new surgical approach in the management of pseudophakic malignant glaucoma. Design: Noncomparative case series. Participants: Five consecutive patients with pseudophakic malignant glaucoma. Methods: All patients underwent zonulo-hyaloido-vitrectomy. The procedure involves the performance of zonulectomy, hyaloidectomy, and anterior vitrectomy (zonulo-hyaloido-vitrectomy) through a peripheral iridectomy or iridotomy via the anterior chamber. Main Outcome Measures: Medications, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, and anterior and posterior segment findings were recorded before and after surgery. Results: Resolution of the malignant glaucoma was achieved in all cases. No recurrences were observed after a median follow-up of 5.5 months (range, 1-9 months). In one patient with extensive anterior synechiae, bleb failure occurred after the resolution of the malignant glaucoma. This patient was treated successfully with a guarded filtration procedure supplemented with 5-fluorouracil. No other complications were observed. Conclusions: Zonulo-hyaloido-vitrectomy via the anterior segment appears to be an alternative option in the treatment of patients with pseudophakic malignant glaucoma. © 2001 by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
