We report here the characterization of the catalytic component (ISPNAR) of a new naphthalene dioxygenase from Rhodococcus sp. strain NCIMB12038. The genes encoding the two subunits of ISPNAR are not homologous to their previously characterized counterparts in Pseudomonas. The deduced amino acid sequences have only 33 and 29% identity with the corresponding subunits in Pseudomonas putida NCIB 9816-4, for which the tertiary structure has been reported.

Aims: To examine whether job strain (ie, excessive demands combined with low control) is related to smoking cessation.
Methods: Prospective cohort study of 4928 Finnish employees who were baseline smokers. In addition to individual scores, coworker-assessed work unit level scores were calculated. A multilevel logistic regression analysis, with work units at the second level, was performed.
Results: At follow-up, 21% of baseline smokers had quit smoking. After adjustment for sex, age, employer and marital status, elevated odds ratios (ORs) for smoking cessation were found for the lowest vs the highest quartile of work unit level job strain (OR 1.43, 95% CI 1.17 to 1.75) and for the highest vs the lowest quartile of work unit level job control (OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.31 to 1.96). After additional adjustment for health behaviours and trait anxiety, similar results were observed. Further adjustment for socioeconomic position slightly attenuated these associations, but an additional adjustment for individual strain/control had little effect on the results. The association between job strain and smoking cessation was slightly stronger in light than in moderate/heavy smokers. The results for individual job strain and job control were in the same direction as the work unit models, although these relationships became insignificant after adjustment for socioeconomic position. Job demands were not associated with smoking cessation.
Conclusions: Smoking cessation may be less likely in workplaces with high strain and low control. Policies and programs addressing employee job strain and control might also contribute to the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions.

Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the association between job strain and the co-occurrence of adverse health behaviors, smoking; heavy drinking; obesity, and physical inactivity. Methods. The authors studied cross-sectional data of 34,058 female and 8154 male public sector employees. Results: Multinomial logistic regression models adjusted for sex, age, basic education, marital status, and type of job contract showed that high job strain and passive jobs were associated with 1.3 to 1.4 times higher odds of having >= 3 (vs 0) adverse health behaviors. Among men, low job control was associated with a 1.3 fold likelihood and amon women active jobs were associated with a 1.2 fold likelihood of having >= 3 (vs 0) adverse behaviors. High demands were associated with a higher likelihood of co-occurrence of one to two (vs 0) adverse behav irs among women. Conclusions. b strain conditions may be associated with the co-occurrence of adverse health behaviors that contribute to preventable chronic diseases. Clinical Significance. Adversejob conditions may increase the likelihood of co-occurring health risk behaviors. Reducing work stress by increasingl ob control and decreasing psychologic demands might help efforts to promote healthy 1 festyles.

The regulation of naphthalene and 1-naphthol metabolism in a Rhodococcus sp. (NCIMB 12038) has been investigated. The microorganism utilizes separate pathways for the degradation of these compounds, and they are regulated independently, Naphthalene metabolism was inducible, but not by salicylate, and 1-naphthol metabolism, although constitutive, was also repressed during growth on salicylate. The biochemistry of naphthalene degradation in this strain was otherwise identical to that found in Pseudomonas putida, with salicylate as a central metabolite and naphthalene initially being oxidized via a naphthalene dioxygenase enzyme to cis-(1R,2S)-1,2-dihydroxy-1,2-dihydronaphtalene (naphthalene cis-diol). A dioxygenase enzyme was not expressed under growth conditions which facilitate 1-naphthol degradation, However, biotransformations with indene as a substrate suggested that a monooxygenase enzyme may be involved in the degradation of this compound, Indole was transformed to indigo by both naphthalene-grown NCIMB 12038 and by cells grown in the absence of an inducer, Therefore, the presence of a naphthalene dioxygenase enzyme activity was not necessary for this reaction. Thus, the biotransformation of indole to indigo may be facilitated by another type of enzyme (possibly a monooxygenase) in this organism.

For the potential influence produced by the reinforcement/matrix interphase in particle reinforced metal matrix composites (PMMCs), a unit cell model with transition interphase was proposed. Uniaxial tensile loading was simulated and the stress/strain behavior was predicted. The results show that a transition interphase with both appropriate strength and thickness could affect the failure mode, reduce the stress concentration, and enhance the maximum strain value of the composite.

The reactivity of four different monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) with populations of Bacteroides fragilis NCTC 9343, enriched by density gradient centrifugation for a large capsule, small capsule and electron-dense layer (EDL) only visible by electronmicroscopy, was examined. The MAbs reacted strongly with polysaccharides present in both the large capsule- and EDL-enriched populations but not in the small capsule-enriched populations. The pattern of labelling was determined by immunoblotting, immunofluorescence and immuno-electronmicroscopy, and flow cytometry. The MAbs labelled cell membrane-associated epitopes in the large capsule- and EDL-enriched populations and cell-free material in the EDL population. By immunoblotting, ladders of repeating polysaccharide subunits were evident in the EDL population but not in the large capsule population. The proportion of cells labelled within each population was determined by flow cytometry. The reactivity of another MAb with the small capsule population was confirmed by flow cytometry. A qualitative indication of epitope expression was obtained by examination of the flow cytometric profiles. Differential expression of the same saccharide epitope was observed both between and within structurally distinct B. fragilis populations. The MAbs were species-specific and cross-reacted with several recent clinical isolates. These polysaccharides may be relevant to the virulence of B. fragilis.

Propionibacterium acnes, a non-spore-forming, anaerobic Gram-positive bacterium, is most notably recognized for its association with acne vulgaris (I. Kurokawa et al., Exp. Dermatol. 18:821–832, 2009). We now present the draft genome sequence of an antibiotic-resistantP. acnesstrain, PRP-38, isolated from an acne patient in the United Kingdom and belonging to the novel type IC cluster. This paper presents an innovative sensor system, created specifically for new civil engineering structural monitoring applications, allowing specially packaged fiber grating-based sensors to be used in harsh, in-the-field measurement conditions for accurate strain measurement with full temperature compensation. The sensor consists of two fiber Bragg gratings that are protected within a polypropylene package, with one of the fiber gratings isolated from the influence of strain and thus responding only to temperature variations, while the other is sensitive to both strain and temperature. To achieve this, the temperature-monitoring fiber grating is slightly bent and enclosed in a metal envelope to isolate it effectively from the strain. Through an appropriate calibration process, both the strain and temperature coefficients of each individual grating component when incorporated in the sensor system can be thus obtained. By using these calibrated coefficients in the operation of the sensor, both strain and temperature can be accurately determined. The specific application for which these sensors have been designed is seen when installed on an innovative small-scale flexi-arch bridge where they are used for real-time strain measurements during the critical installation stage (lifting) and loading. These sensors have demonstrated enhanced resilience when embedded in or surface-mounted on such concrete structures, providing accurate and consistent strain measurements not only during installation but subsequently during use. This offers an inexpensive and highly effective monitoring system tailored for the new, rapid method of the installation of small-scale bridges for a variety of civil engineering applications.

The influence of both compressive and tensile epitaxial strain along with the electrical boundary conditions on the ferroelastic and ferroelectric domain patterns of bismuth ferrite films was studied. BiFeO3 films were grown on SrTiO3(001), DyScO3(110), GdScO3(110), and SmScO3(110) substrates to investigate the effect of room temperature in-plane strain ranging from -1.4% to +0.75%. Piezoresponse force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction measurements, and ferroelectric polarization measurements were performed to study the properties of the films. We show that BiFeO3 films with and without SrRuO3 bottom electrode have different growth mechanisms and that in both cases reduction of the domain variants is possible. Without SrRuO3, stripe domains with reduced variants are formed on all rare earth scandate substrates because of their monoclinic symmetry. In addition, tensile strained films exhibit a rotation of the unit cell with increasing film thickness. On the other side, the presence of SrRuO3 promotes step flow growth of BiFeO3. In case of vicinal SrTiO3 and DyScO3 substrates with high quality SrRuO3 bottom electrode and a low miscut angle of approximate to 0.15 degrees we observed suppression of the formation of certain domain variants. The quite large in-plane misfit of SrRuO3 with GdScO3 and SmScO3 prevents the growth of high quality SrRuO3 films and subsequent domain variants reduction in BiFeO3 on these substrates, when SrRuO3 is used as a bottom electrode.
