A catalyst preparation by design is one of the ultimate goals in chemistry. The first step towards this goal is to understand the origin of reaction barriers. In this study, we have investigated several catalytic reactions on some transition metal surfaces, using density functional theory. All the reaction barriers have been determined. By detailed analyses we obtain some insight into the reaction barrier. Each barrier is related to (i) the potential energy surface of reactants on the surface, (ii) the total chemisorption energy of reactants, and (iii) the metal d orbital occupancy and the reactant valency. This paper explores the historical development of POE in order to provide a contextual backdrop to current discussions. This review provides a much needed discussion on the benefits and barriers facing POE which should enable designers, facility managers and building users to appreciate the value and purpose of this important building evaluation process. The paper will encourage architects and building owners to conduct POEs to benefit all stakeholders and future designs. This is an international peer reviewed journal.

Across the UK recent policy developments have focused on improved information sharing and inter-agency cooperation. Professional non-reporting of child maltreatment concerns has been consistently highlighted as a problem in a range of countries and the research literature indicates that this can happen for a variety of reasons. Characteristics such as the type of abuse and the threshold of evidence available are key factors, as are concerns that reporting will damage the professional-client relationship. Professional discipline can also impact on willingness to report, as can personal beliefs about abuse, attitudes towards child protection services and experiences of court processes. Research examining the role of organisational factors in information sharing and reporting emphasises the importance of training and there are some positive indications that training can increase professional awareness of reporting processes and requirements and help to increase knowledge of child abuse and its symptoms. Nonetheless, this is a complex issue and the need for training to go beyond simple awareness raising is recognised. In order to tackle non-reporting in a meaningful way, childcare professionals need access to on-going multidisciplinary training which is specifically tailored to address the range of different factors which impact on reporting attitudes and behaviours.

Environments that are hostile to life are characterized by reduced microbial activity which results in poor soil- and plant-health, low biomass and biodiversity, and feeble ecosystem development. Whereas the functional biosphere may primarily be constrained by water activity (a w) the mechanism(s) by which this occurs have not been fully elucidated. Remarkably we found that, for diverse species of xerophilic fungi at a w values of = 0.72, water activity per se did not limit cellular function. We provide evidence that chaotropic activity determined their biotic window, and obtained mycelial growth at water activities as low as 0.647 (below that recorded for any microbial species) by addition of compounds that reduced the net chaotropicity. Unexpectedly we found that some fungi grew optimally under chaotropic conditions, providing evidence for a previously uncharacterized class of extremophilic microbes. Further studies to elucidate the way in which solute activities interact to determine the limits of life may lead to enhanced biotechnological processes, and increased productivity of agricultural and natural ecosystems in arid and semiarid regions.
