Audio scrambling can be employed to ensure confidentiality in audio distribution. We first describe scrambling for raw audio using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) first and then focus on MP3 audio scrambling. We perform scrambling based on a set of keys which allows for a set of audio outputs having different qualities. During descrambling, the number of keys provided and the number of rounds of descrambling performed will decide the audio output quality. We also perform scrambling by using multiple keys on the MP3 audio format. With a subset of keys, we can descramble to obtain a low quality audio. However, we can obtain the original quality audio by using all of the keys. Our experiments show that the proposed algorithms are effective, fast, simple to implement while providing flexible control over the progressive quality of the audio output. The security level provided by the scheme is sufficient for protecting MP3 music content.

We present a multimodal detection and tracking algorithm for sensors composed of a camera mounted between two microphones. Target localization is performed on color-based change detection in the video modality and on time difference of arrival (TDOA) estimation between the two microphones in the audio modality. The TDOA is computed by multiband generalized cross correlation (GCC) analysis. The estimated directions of arrival are then postprocessed using a Riccati Kalman filter. The visual and audio estimates are finally integrated, at the likelihood level, into a particle filter (PF) that uses a zero-order motion model, and a weighted probabilistic data association (WPDA) scheme. We demonstrate that the Kalman filtering (KF) improves the accuracy of the audio source localization and that the WPDA helps to enhance the tracking performance of sensor fusion in reverberant scenarios. The combination of multiband GCC, KF, and WPDA within the particle filtering framework improves the performance of the algorithm in noisy scenarios. We also show how the proposed audiovisual tracker summarizes the observed scene by generating metadata that can be transmitted to other network nodes instead of transmitting the raw images and can be used for very low bit rate communication. Moreover, the generated metadata can also be used to detect and monitor events of interest.

A scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) based mean shift algorithm is presented for object tracking in real scenarios. SIFT features are used to correspond the region of interests across frames. Meanwhile, mean shift is applied to conduct similarity search via color histograms. The probability distributions from these two measurements are evaluated in an expectation–maximization scheme so as to achieve maximum likelihood estimation of similar regions. This mutual support mechanism can lead to consistent tracking performance if one of the two measurements becomes unstable. Experimental work demonstrates that the proposed mean shift/SIFT strategy improves the tracking performance of the classical mean shift and SIFT tracking algorithms in complicated real scenarios.

This letter proposes an efficient extension of the set partitioning embedded block (SPECK) algorithm to lossless multispectral image coding. Such a wavelet-based coder is widely referred to in the literature, especially for lossless image coding, and is considered to be one of the most efficient techniques exhibiting very low computational complexity when compared with other state-of-the-art coders. The modification proposed in this letter is simple and provides significant improvement over the conventional SPECK. The key idea is to join each group of two consecutive wavelet-transformed spectral bands during the SPECK coding since they show high similarities with respect to insignificant sets at the same locations. Simulation results, carried out on a number of test images, demonstrate that this grouping procedure considerably saves on the bit budget for encoding the multispectral images.

The coefficients of an echo canceller with a near-end section and a far-end section are usually updated with the same updating scheme, such as the LMS algorithm. A novel scheme is proposed for echo cancellation that is based on the minimisation of two different cost functions, i.e. one for the near-end section and a different one for the far-end section. The approach considered leads to a substantial improvement in performance over the LMS algorithm when it is applied to both sections of the echo canceller. The convergence properties of the algorithm are derived. The proposed scheme is also shown to be robust to noise variations. Simulation results confirm the superior performance of the new algorithm.

A family of stochastic gradient algorithms and their behaviour in the data echo cancellation work platform are presented. The cost function adaptation algorithms use an error exponent update strategy based on an absolute error mapping, which is updated at every iteration. The quadratic and nonquadratic cost functions are special cases of the new family. Several possible realisations are introduced using these approaches. The noisy error problem is discussed and the digital recursive filter estimator is proposed. The simulation outcomes confirm the effectiveness of the proposed family of algorithms.

This letter investigates the optimum decision delay and tap-length of the finite-length decision feedback equalizer. First we show that, if the feedback filter (FBF) length N-b is equal to or larger than the channel memory upsilon and the decision delay Delta is smaller than the feedforward filter (FFF) length N-f, then only the first Delta + 1 elements of the FFF can be nonzero. Based on this result we prove that the maximum effective FBF length is equal to the channel memory upsilon, and if N-b greater than or equal to upsilon and N-f is long enough, the optimum decision delay that minimizes the MMSE is N-f - 1.

A spectrally efficient cooperative protocol for uplink wireless transmission in a centralised communication system is proposed, where each of the N users play the relaying and source roles simultaneously by using superposition (SP) modulation. The probability density function of the mutual information between SP-modulated transmitted and received signals of the cooperative uplink channels is derived. Using the high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) approximation of this density function, the outage probability formula of the system as well as its easily computable tight upper and lower bounds are obtained and these formulas are evaluated numerically. Numerical results show that the proposed strategy can achieve around 3 dB performance gain over comparable schemes. Furthermore, the multiplexing and diversity tradeoff formula is derived to illustrate the optimal performance of the proposed protocol, which also confirms that the SP relaying transmission does not cause any loss of data rate. Moreover, performance characterisation in terms of ergodic and outage capacities are studied and numerical results show that the proposed scheme can achieve significantly larger outage capacity than direct transmission, which is similar to other cooperative schemes. The superiority of the proposed strategy is demonstrated by the fact that it can maintain almost the same ergodic capacity as the direct transmission, whereas the ergodic capacity of other cooperative schemes would be much worse.

The least-mean-fourth (LMF) algorithm is known for its fast convergence and lower steady state error, especially in sub-Gaussian noise environments. Recent work on normalised versions of the LMF algorithm has further enhanced its stability and performance in both Gaussian and sub-Gaussian noise environments. For example, the recently developed normalised LMF (XE-NLMF) algorithm is normalised by the mixed signal and error powers, and weighted by a fixed mixed-power parameter. Unfortunately, this algorithm depends on the selection of this mixing parameter. In this work, a time-varying mixed-power parameter technique is introduced to overcome this dependency. A convergence analysis, transient analysis, and steady-state behaviour of the proposed algorithm are derived and verified through simulations. An enhancement in performance is obtained through the use of this technique in two different scenarios. Moreover, the tracking analysis of the proposed algorithm is carried out in the presence of two sources of nonstationarities: (1) carrier frequency offset between transmitter and receiver and (2) random variations in the environment. Close agreement between analysis and simulation results is obtained. The results show that, unlike in the stationary case, the steady-state excess mean-square error is not a monotonically increasing function of the step size. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. The authors propose a three-node full diversity cooperative protocol, which allows the retransmission of all symbols. By allowing multiple nodes to transmit simultaneously, relaying transmission only consumes limited bandwidth resource. To facilitate the performance analysis of the proposed cooperative protocol, the lower and upper bounds of the outage probability are first developed, and then the high signal-to-noise ratio behaviour is studied. Our analytical results show that the proposed strategy can achieve full diversity. To achieve the performance gain promised by the cooperative diversity, at the relays decode-and-forward strategy is adopted and an iterative soft-interference-cancellation minimum mean-squared error equaliser is developed. The simulation results compare the bit-error-rate performance of the proposed protocol with the non-cooperative scheme and the scheme presented by Azarian et al. ( 2005).
