Toluene dioxygenase-catalyzed dihydroxylation, in the carbocyclic rings of quinoline, 2-chloroquinoline, 2-methoxyquinoline, and 3-bromoquinoline, was found to yield the corresponding enantiopure cis-5,6- and -7,8-dihydrodiol metabolites using whole cells of Pseudomonas putida UV4. cis-Dihydroxylation at the 3,4-bond of 2-chloroquinoline, 2-methoxyquinoline, and 2-quinolone was also found to yield the heterocyclic cis-dihydrodiol metabolite, (+)-cis-(3S,4S)-3,4-dihydroxy-3,4-dihydro-2-quinolone. Heterocyclic cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, resulting from dihydroxylation at the 5,6- and 3,4-bonds of 1-methyl 2-pyridone, were isolated from bacteria containing toluene, naphthalene, and biphenyl dioxygenases. The enantiomeric excess (ee) values (>98%) and the absolute configurations of the carbocyclic cis-dihydrodiol metabolites of quinoline substrates (benzylic R) and of the heterocyclic cis-diols from quinoline, 2-quinolone, and 2-pyridone substrates (allylic S) were found to be in accord with earlier models for dioxygenase-catalyzed cis-dihydroxylation of carbocyclic arenes. Evidence favouring the dioxygenase-catalyzed cis-dihydroxylation of pyridine-ring systems is presented.

Background There is considerable interest in developing coitally indepen- dent, sustained release formulations for long-term administration of HIV microbicides. Vaginal ring devices are at the forefront of this formulation strategy. Methods Non-medicated silicone elastomer vaginal rings were prepared having a range of appropriate dimensions for testing vaginal ?t in pig- tailed and Chinese rhesus macaques. Cervicovaginal proin?ammatory markers were evaluated. Compression testing was performed to compare the relative ?exibility of various macaque and commercial human rings. Results All rings remained in place during the study period and no tissue irritation or signi?cant induction of cervicovaginal proin?ammatory mark- ers or signs of physical discomfort were observed during the 8-week study period. Conclusions Qualitative evaluation suggests that the 25 · 5-mm ring pro- vided optimal ?t in both macaque species. A novel 3rd-order compact E-plane ridge waveguide filter is presented. Miniaturization is achieved upon introducing a configuration of parallel-coupled E-plane ridge waveguide resonators. Furthermore, the proposed filter allows for transmission zeros at finite frequencies. Fabrication simplicity and mass producibility of standard E-plane filters is maintained. The numerical and experimental results are presented to validate the proposed configuration. A miniaturisation factor of 2 and very sharp upper cutoff are achieved. 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Novel periodically loaded E-plane waveguide resonators are presented in this paper. The proposed resonators make use of the slow-wave effect in order to achieve significantly increased loaded Q values for resonators of constant volume, as compared to their homogeneous counterparts, without introducing any complexity in the fabrication process. In this paper novel 3D periodic multilayer structures are investigated in MIC technology, and a periodically loaded multilayer waveguide resonant structure is proposed. This is a very compact structure and still maintains simple fabrication process. The resonator is designed at 10 and 28 GHz. The simulated results of this resonator, which is obtained from commercial FEM software package HFSS, are confirmed by experimental results. The experiments are based oil the same resonator structure, only at 10 GHz. By modifying the conventional waveguide resonator, with the proposed structure, a minimum 30% shorter resonator can be achieved, which is very important at filter applications. A series of metathesis polymers and copolymers have been formed and their structures were analysed by C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Noble metal and non-noble metal salt catalysts are distinguished by their behaviour in various solvents. Thus, in phenolic solvents, the former class produce alternating copolymers from cyclopentene and norbornene, while the latter are unaffected and produce random copolymers. In contrast, ether solvents have the effect of markedly increasing the cis content of polymers from the latter catalysts while the former are unaffected.

Ring-opened metathesis polymers and copolymers have been formed from norbornene, norbornadiene, a range of their derivatives, and cyclopentene using RuCl2(CHPh)(PCy3)(2), as catalyst. C-13 NMR analysis of the polymers illustrate a rather selective propagation reaction. The catalyst is highly regioselective, and the polymers are generally high trans with a strong isotactic bias. However, polymers from diene monomers tend to be less isotactic than those from the corresponding monoenes, and in the case of 7-methylnorbornadiene the polymer has an overall syndiotactic bias. A rate enhancing effect, noted previously, due to an oxygen atom proximate to the monomer double bond, is less pronounced than with other initiators. Catalyst activity, in the case of certain diene monomers, was shown to be monomer dependent and rate enhancements were also achieved using phenol as solvent. The results are interpreted in terms of the steric and electronic properties of both the catalyst and the monomers.
