Knight, David W.; Lewis, Neil; Share, Andrew C.; Haigh, David. Chemistry Department, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK. Journal of the Chemical Society, Perkin Transactions 1: Organic and Bio-Organic Chemistry (1998), (22), 3673-3684. Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry, CODEN: JCPRB4 ISSN: 0300-922X. Journal written in English. CAN 130:153545 AN 1998:715806 CAPLUS (Copyright (C) 2009 ACS on SciFinder (R)) Abstract Redn. of the piperidine keto esters, e.g., I, using fermenting bakers' yeast provides high yields of the corresponding hydroxy esters, e.g., II, exclusively as the cis-diastereoisomers and with good levels (?80%) of enantiomeric enrichment. The relative stereochemistries of the products were deduced from NMR data while the abs. configurations were detd. by degrdn. to known piperidinemethanol derivs. or, in the case of hydroxy ester III, by homologation to (R)-3-quinuclidinol IV.

Anomalous fluorinations of 3-aryl-2-hydroxypropanoic esters by diethylaminosulfur trifluoride (DAST). Haigh, David; Jefcott, Lee J.; Magee, Katherkine; McNab, Hamish. Dep. Med. chem., SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Epsom, UK. Journal of the Chemical Society, Perkin Transactions 1: Organic and Bio-Organic Chemistry (1996), (24), 2895-2900. Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry, CODEN: JCPRB4 ISSN: 0300-922X. Journal written in English. CAN 126:143928 AN 1997:56534 CAPLUS (Copyright (C) 2009 ACS on SciFinder (R)) Abstract Treatment of 3-aryl-2-hydroxypropanoic esters with diethylaminosulfur trifluoride (DAST) gives considerable amts. of rearranged 2-aryl-3-fluoropropanoic esters, together with the expected products. The extent of rearrangement is dependent on solvent and on the substitution pattern of the aryl ring; the mechanism of rearrangement probably involves anchimeric assistance by the aryl group in the SN1 component of the reaction pathway. Reaction of the isomeric 3-hydroxy-2-phenylpropanoic ester shows much less rearrangement under similar conditions, and an elimination product is also obtained.

CAN 122:105736 AN 1995:237497 CAPLUS (Copyright (C) 2009 ACS on SciFinder (R)) Abstract A novel biotransformation system for the redn. of carbon-carbon double bonds in 5-benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-diones to give the corresponding 5-benzylthiazolidine-1,4-diones, using whole cells of red yeasts, is described. These reduced compds., which are recovered in good yield, are of potential use in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The mild reaction conditions developed allow redn. of 5-benzylidenethiazolidine-2,4-diones contg. other functionalities which are not compatible with alternative redn. methods. The biocatalytic redn. is enantioselective and the synthesis of R-(+)-5-(4-{2-[methyl(2-pyridyl)amino]ethoxy}benzyl)thiazolidine-2,4-dione by Rhodotorula rubra CBS 6469 and structure confirmation by X-ray crystallog. is detailed. Optimization of reaction conditions (including immobilization) for these whole cell redn. system is described.

Quinoline derivatives are known to possess a range of bioactive and medicinal activities, which have been exploited in the design of antibacterial, antifungal and antimalarial compounds. In this study, we report on the microbiological toxicity of a series of 1-alkylquinolinium bromides against a range of clinically relevant microorganisms, in both planktonic and sessile (biofilm) cultures. A comparison of antimicrobial activity against planktonic bacteria and established biofilms is presented. In general, 1-alkylquinolinium ionic liquids possess excellent, broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against microorganisms grown in both the planktonic and sessile, or biofilm, mode of growth. Importantly, these compounds are potent against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, as well as fungi, with a clear dependency on length of the alkyl substituent for activity, with compounds containing twelve and fourteen carbons in the alkyl group exhibiting highest antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

A recently generalized theory of perceptual guidance (general tau theory) was used to analyse coordination in skilled movement. The theory posits that (i) guiding movement entails controlling closure of spatial and/or force gaps between effecters and goals, by sensing and regulating the tau s of the gaps (the time-to-closure at current closure rate), (ii) a principal way of coordinating movements is keeping the rs of different gaps in constant ratio (known as tau-coupling), and (iii) intrinsically paced movements are guided and coordinated by tau-coupling onto a tau-guide, tau(g), generated in the nervous system and described by the equation tau(g) = 0.5(t-T-2/t) where T is the duration of the body movement and t is the time from the start of the movement. Kinematic analysis of hand to mouth movements by human adults, with eyes open or closed, indicated that hand guidance was achieved by maintaining, during 80-85% of the movement, the tau-couplings tau(alpha)-tau(t) and tau(t)-tau(g), where tau(t) is tau of the hand-mouth gap, tau(alpha) is tau of the angular gap to be closed by steering the hand and tau(g) is an intrinsic tau-guide.

The seventh-century Patrician documents in the Book of Armagh, and other early sources such as Bethu Phátraic, contain references to the toponym Macha, which has been identified by the Dictionary of the Irish Language with either the ecclesiastical centre of Ard Macha or the ‘royal seat’ of Emain Macha. This article examines the evidence for the name in the sources and illustrates that Macha applies primarily to the plain in which both Ard Macha and Emain Macha are located. It is to be identified with Mag Macha ‘the plain of Macha’, familiar to us from the Dindshenchus, and further evidence of the organic potential of a given toponym is witnessed in later sources where the plain is referred to as Mag/Machaire na hE(a)mna ‘the plain of Emain’ and Machaire Aird/Arda Macha ‘the plain of Armagh’. The extent of Macha is difficult to establish with certainty, but it seems very likely that it stretched north to the River Blackwater as well as south towards Slíab Fúait.

A decade ago, perceiving emotion was generally equated with taking a sample (a still photograph or a few seconds of speech) that unquestionably signified an archetypal emotional state, and attaching the appropriate label. Computational research has shifted that paradigm in multiple ways. Concern with realism is key. Emotion generally colours ongoing action and interaction: describing that colouring is a different problem from categorizing brief episodes of relatively pure emotion. Multiple challenges flow from that. Describing emotional colouring is a challenge in itself. One approach is to use everyday categories describing states that are partly emotional and partly cognitive. Another approach is to use dimensions. Both approaches need ways to deal with gradual changes over time and mixed emotions. Attaching target descriptions to a sample poses problems of both procedure and validation. Cues are likely to be distributed both in time and across modalities, and key decisions may depend heavily on context. The usefulness of acted data is limited because it tends not to reproduce these features. By engaging with these challenging issues, research is not only achieving impressive results, but also offering a much deeper understanding of the problem.
