We propose a simple and flexible framework for forecasting the joint density of asset returns. The multinormal distribution is augmented with a polynomial in (time-varying) non-central co-moments of assets. We estimate the coefficients of the polynomial via the Method of Moments for a carefully selected set of co-moments. In an extensive empirical study, we compare the proposed model with a range of other models widely used in the literature. Employing a recently proposed as well as standard techniques to evaluate multivariate forecasts, we conclude that the augmented joint density provides highly accurate forecasts of the “negative tail” of the joint distribution.

In this paper, we investigate the remanufacturing problem of pricing single-class used products (cores) in the face of random price-dependent returns and random demand. Specifically, we propose a dynamic pricing policy for the cores and then model the problem as a continuous-time Markov decision process. Our models are designed to address three objectives: finite horizon total cost minimization, infinite horizon discounted cost, and average cost minimization. Besides proving optimal policy uniqueness and establishing monotonicity results for the infinite horizon problem, we also characterize the structures of the optimal policies, which can greatly simplify the computational procedure. Finally, we use computational examples to assess the impacts of specific parameters on optimal price and reveal the benefits of a dynamic pricing policy. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The features of two popular models used to describe the observed response characteristics of typical oxygen optical sensors based on luminescence quenching are examined critically. The models are the 'two-site' and 'Gaussian distribution in natural lifetime, tau(o),' models. These models are used to characterise the response features of typical optical oxygen sensors; features which include: downward curving Stern-Volmer plots and increasingly non-first order luminescence decay kinetics with increasing partial pressures of oxygen, pO(2). Neither model appears able to unite these latter features, let alone the observed disparate array of response features exhibited by the myriad optical oxygen sensors reported in the literature, and still maintain any level of physical plausibility. A model based on a Gaussian distribution in quenching rate constant, k(q), is developed and, although flawed by a limited breadth in distribution, rho, does produce Stern-Volmer plots which would cover the range in curvature seen with real optical oxygen sensors. A new 'log-Gaussian distribution in tau(o) or k(q)' model is introduced which has the advantage over a Gaussian distribution model of placing no limitation on the value of rho. Work on a 'log-Gaussian distribution in tau(o)' model reveals that the Stern-Volmer quenching plots would show little degree in curvature, even at large rho values and the luminescence decays would become increasingly first order with increasing pO(2). In fact, with real optical oxygen sensors, the opposite is observed and thus the model appears of little value. In contrast, a 'log-Gaussian distribution in k(o)' model does produce the trends observed with real optical oxygen sensors; although it is technically restricted in use to those in which the kinetics of luminescence decay are good first order in the absence of oxygen. The latter model gives a good fit to the major response features of sensors which show the latter feature, most notably the [Ru(dpp)(3)(2+)(Ph4B-)(2)] in cellulose optical oxygen sensors. The scope of a log-Gaussian model for further expansion and, therefore, application to optical oxygen sensors, by combining both a log-Gaussian distribution in k(o) with one in tau(o) is briefly discussed.

In this paper we propose a statistical model for detection and tracking of human silhouette and the corresponding 3D skeletal structure in gait sequences. We follow a point distribution model (PDM) approach using a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The problem of non-lineal PCA is partially resolved by applying a different PDM depending of pose estimation; frontal, lateral and diagonal, estimated by Fisher's linear discriminant. Additionally, the fitting is carried out by selecting the closest allowable shape from the training set by means of a nearest neighbor classifier. To improve the performance of the model we develop a human gait analysis to take into account temporal dynamic to track the human body. The incorporation of temporal constraints on the model increase reliability and robustness.

The relationships among organisms and their surroundings can be of immense complexity. To describe and understand an ecosystem as a tangled bank, multiple ways of interaction and their effects have to be considered, such as predation, competition, mutualism and facilitation. Understanding the resulting interaction networks is a challenge in changing environments, e.g. to predict knock-on effects of invasive species and to understand how climate change impacts biodiversity. The elucidation of complex ecological systems with their interactions will benefit enormously from the development of new machine learning tools that aim to infer the structure of interaction networks from field data. In the present study, we propose a novel Bayesian regression and multiple changepoint model (BRAM) for reconstructing species interaction networks from observed species distributions. The model has been devised to allow robust inference in the presence of spatial autocorrelation and distributional heterogeneity. We have evaluated the model on simulated data that combines a trophic niche model with a stochastic population model on a 2-dimensional lattice, and we have compared the performance of our model with L1-penalized sparse regression (LASSO) and non-linear Bayesian networks with the BDe scoring scheme. In addition, we have applied our method to plant ground coverage data from the western shore of the Outer Hebrides with the objective to infer the ecological interactions. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Automatic gender classification has many security and commercial applications. Various modalities have been investigated for gender classification with face-based classification being the most popular. In some real-world scenarios the face may be partially occluded. In these circumstances a classification based on individual parts of the face known as local features must be adopted. We investigate gender classification using lip movements. We show for the first time that important gender specific information can be obtained from the way in which a person moves their lips during speech. Furthermore our study indicates that the lip dynamics during speech provide greater gender discriminative information than simply lip appearance. We also show that the lip dynamics and appearance contain complementary gender information such that a model which captures both traits gives the highest overall classification result. We use Discrete Cosine Transform based features and Gaussian Mixture Modelling to model lip appearance and dynamics and employ the XM2VTS database for our experiments. Our experiments show that a model which captures lip dynamics along with appearance can improve gender classification rates by between 16-21% compared to models of only lip appearance.

In this paper, we introduce an application of matrix factorization to produce corpus-derived, distributional
models of semantics that demonstrate cognitive plausibility. We find that word representations
learned by Non-Negative Sparse Embedding (NNSE), a variant of matrix factorization, are sparse,
effective, and highly interpretable. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach which
yields semantic representation of words satisfying these three desirable properties. Though extensive
experimental evaluations on multiple real-world tasks and datasets, we demonstrate the superiority
of semantic models learned by NNSE over other state-of-the-art baselines.

This paper introduces hybrid address spaces as a fundamental design methodology for implementing scalable runtime systems on many-core architectures without hardware support for cache coherence. We use hybrid address spaces for an implementation of MapReduce, a programming model for large-scale data processing, and the implementation of a remote memory access (RMA) model. Both implementations are available on the Intel SCC and are portable to similar architectures. We present the design and implementation of HyMR, a MapReduce runtime system whereby different stages and the synchronization operations between them alternate between a distributed memory address space and a shared memory address space, to improve performance and scalability. We compare HyMR to a reference implementation and we find that HyMR improves performance by a factor of 1.71× over a set of representative MapReduce benchmarks. We also compare HyMR with Phoenix++, a state-of-art implementation for systems with hardware-managed cache coherence in terms of scalability and sustained to peak data processing bandwidth, where HyMR demon- strates improvements of a factor of 3.1× and 3.2× respectively. We further evaluate our hybrid remote memory access (HyRMA) programming model and assess its performance to be superior of that of message passing.

Abstract—Power capping is an essential function for efficient power budgeting and cost management on modern server systems. Contemporary server processors operate under power caps by using dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). However, these processors are often deployed in non-uniform memory
access (NUMA) architectures, where thread allocation between cores may significantly affect performance and power consumption. This paper proposes a method which maximizes performance under power caps on NUMA systems by dynamically optimizing two knobs: DVFS and thread allocation. The method selects the optimal combination of the two knobs with models based on artificial neural network (ANN) that captures the nonlinear effect of thread allocation on performance. We implement
the proposed method as a runtime system and evaluate it with twelve multithreaded benchmarks on a real AMD Opteron based NUMA system. The evaluation results show that our method outperforms a naive technique optimizing only DVFS by up to
67.1%, under a power cap.

Plasma etch is a key process in modern semiconductor manufacturing facilities as it offers process simplification and yet greater dimensional tolerances compared to wet chemical etch technology. The main challenge of operating plasma etchers is to maintain a consistent etch rate spatially and temporally for a given wafer and for successive wafers processed in the same etch tool. Etch rate measurements require expensive metrology steps and therefore in general only limited sampling is performed. Furthermore, the results of measurements are not accessible in real-time, limiting the options for run-to-run control. This paper investigates a Virtual Metrology (VM) enabled Dynamic Sampling (DS) methodology as an alternative paradigm for balancing the need to reduce costly metrology with the need to measure more frequently and in a timely fashion to enable wafer-to-wafer control. Using a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) VM model for etch rate estimation of a plasma etch process, the proposed dynamic sampling methodology is demonstrated and evaluated for a number of different predictive dynamic sampling rules. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper the evolution of a time domain dynamic identification technique based on a statistical moment approach is presented. This technique can be used in the case of structures under base random excitations in the linear state and in the non linear one. By applying Itoˆ stochastic calculus, special algebraic equations can be obtained depending on the statistical moments of the response of the system to be identified. Such equations can be used for the dynamic identification of the mechanical parameters and of the input. The above equations, differently from many techniques in the literature, show the possibility of obtaining the identification of the dissipation characteristics independently from the input. Through the paper the first formulation of this technique, applicable to non linear systems, based on the use of a restricted class of the potential models, is presented. Further a second formulation of the technique in object, applicable to each kind of linear systems and based on the use of a class of linear models, characterized by a mass proportional damping matrix, is described.
