The interfacial tension of the liquid-liquid phase boundary of several 1,3-dialkyl imidazolium based ionic liquids, namely, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(1)mim][NTf2], 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazoliurn bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(2)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(4)mim][NTf2], 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(6)mim][NTf2], 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide [C(8)mim][NTf2], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate [C(4)mim][CF3SO3], and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoroacetate [C(4)mim][CF3COO] with water and with the n-alkanes, n-hexane, n-octane and n-decane, has been measured using the pendant drop method as a function of temperature from 293 to 323 K. The experimental interfacial tension data were correlated using the ionic liquid parachor estimation method and a mutual solubility model. The influence of the cation and anion of ionic liquids and also of alkyl chain length of n-alkanes on interfacial tension is discussed. It has also been demonstrated that the interfacial tension data estimated by the correlation methods are in good agreement with the experimental data. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A force field model of the Keating type supplemented by rules to break, form, and interchange bonds is applied to investigate thermodynamic and structural properties of the amorphous SiO2 surface. A simulated quench from the liquid phase has been carried out for a silica sample made of 3888 silicon and 7776 oxygen atoms arranged on a slab similar to 40 angstrom thick, periodically repeated along two directions. The quench results into an amorphous sample, exposing two parallel square surfaces of similar to 42 nm(2) area each. Thermal averages computed during the quench allow us to determine the surface thermodynamic properties as a function of temperature. The surface tension turns out to be gamma=310 +/- 20 erg/cm(2) at room temperature and gamma=270 +/- 30 at T=2000 K, in fair agreement with available experimental estimates. The entropy contribution Ts-s to the surface tension is relatively low at all temperatures, representing at most similar to 20% of the surface energy. Almost without exceptions, Si atoms are fourfold coordinated and oxygen atoms are twofold coordinated. Twofold and threefold rings appear only at low concentration and are preferentially found in proximity of the surface. Above the glass temperature T-g=1660 +/- 50 K, the mobility of surface atoms is, as expected, slightly higher than that of bulk atoms. The computation of the height-height correlation function shows that the silica surface is rough in the equilibrium and undercooled liquid phase, becoming smooth below the glass temperature T-g.

We present a first-principles molecular dynamics study of an excess electron in condensed phase models of solvated DNA bases. Calculations on increasingly large microsolvated clusters taken from liquid phase simulations show that adiabatic electron affinities increase systematically upon solvation, as for optimized gas-phase geometries. Dynamical simulations after vertical attachment indicate that the excess electron, which is initially found delocalized, localizes around the nucleobases within a 15 fs time scale. This transition requires small rearrangements in the geometry of the bases.

The speciation of chlorozincate(II) ionic liquids, prepared by mixing 1-octyl-3-methylirnidazolium chloride, [C(8)mim]Cl, and zinc(II) chloride in various molar ratios, chi zncl(2), was investigated using Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry; the Gutmann acceptor number, which is a quantitative measure of Lewis acidity, was also determined as a function of the composition. These results were combined with literature data to define the anionic speciation; in the neat liquid phase, the existence of cl(-), [ZnCl4](2-), [Zn2Cl6](2-), [Zn3Cl8](2-), and [Zn4Cl10](2-) anions was confirmed. From two chlorozincate(H) ionic liquids with [C(2)mim](+) cations (chi zncl(2) = 0.33 and chi zncl(2) = 0.50), crystals have been obtained, revealing the structures of [C(2)mim)(2)[ZnCl4] and [C(2)mim](2)[Zn2Cl6] forming three-dimensional hydrogen-bond networks. The compound [C(2)mim](2){Zn4Cl10} was crystallized from the chi zncl(1) = 0.75 composition, showing an open-framework structure, with the first example of zinc in a trigonal-bipyramidal chloride coordination. Reinvestigation of the electrospray ionization mass spectrometry of these systems demonstrated that it is an unreliable technique to study liquid-phase speciation.

In this study it has been demonstrated that mixtures of two solid drugs, ibuprofen and methyl nicotinate, with different but complementary pharmacological activities and which exist as a single liquid phase over a wide composition range at skin temperature, can be formulated as o/w emulsions without the use of an additional hydrophobic carrier. These novel dual drug systems provided significantly enhanced in vitro penetration rates through a model lipophilic barrier membrane compared to conventional individual formulations of each active. Thus, for ibuprofen, drug penetration flux enhancements of three- and 10-fold were observed when compared to an aqueous ibuprofen suspension and a commercial alcohol-based ibuprofen formulation, respectively. Methyl nicotinate penetration rates were shown to be similar for aqueous gels and emulsified systems. Mechanisms explaining these observations are proposed. Novel dual drug formulations of ibuprofen and methyl nicotinate, formulated within the liquid range at skin temperature, were investigated by oscillatory rheology and texture profile analysis. demonstrating the effects of drug and viscosity enhancer concentrations, and disperse phase type upon the rheological, mechanical and drug penetration properties of these systems. This study reports the physicochemical and drug diffusion properties of rifampicin containing poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) networks, designed as bioactive biomaterials. Uniquely, the effects of the states of both rifampicin and PEG and the interplay between these components on these properties are described. PCL matrices containing rifampicin (1-5%, w/w) and PEG 200 (0-15%, w/w) were prepared by casting from an organic solvent (dichloromethane). The films were subsequently characterized in terms of their thermal/thermorheological, surface and tensile properties, biodegradation and drug diffusion/release properties. Incorporation of PEG and/or rifampicin significantly affected the tensile and surface properties of PCL, lowering the ultimate tensile strength, % elongation at break, Young modulus and storage and loss moduli. Both in the absence and presence of PEG, solubilisation of rifampicin within the crystalline domains of PCL was observed. PEG was present as a dispersed liquid phase. The release of rifampicin (3% loading) was unaffected by the presence of PEG. Similarly the release of rifampicin (5%) was unaffected by low concentrations of PEG (5-10%) however, at higher loadings, the release rate of rifampicin was enhanced by the presence of PEG. Rifampicin release (10% loading) was enhanced by the presence of PEG in a concentration dependent fashion. These observations were accredited to enhanced porosity of the matrix. In all cases, diffusion-controlled release of rifampicin occurred which was unaffected by polymer degradation. This study has uniquely illustrated the effect of hydrophilic pore formers on the physicochemical properties of PCL. Interestingly, enhanced diffusion controlled release was only observed from biomaterials containing high loadings of PEG and rifampicin (5, 10%), concentrations that were shown to affect the mechanical properties of the biomaterials. Care should therefore be shown when adopting this strategy to enhance release of bioactive agents from biomaterials. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In liquid-phase reaction systems, the role of the solvent is often limited to the simple requirement of dissolving and/or diluting substrates. However, the correct choice, either pure or mixed, can significantly influence both reaction rate and selectivity. For multi-phase heterogeneously catalysed reactions observed variations may be due to changes in mass transfer rates, reaction mechanism, reaction kinetics, adsorption properties and combinations thereof. The liquid-phase hydrogenation of 2-butanone to 2-butanol over a Ru/SiO catalyst, for example, shows such complex rate behaviour when varying water/isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solvent ratios. In this paper, we outline a strategy which combines measured rate data with physical property measurements and molecular simulation in order to gain a more fundamental understanding of mixed solvent effects for this heterogeneously catalysed reaction. By combining these techniques, the observed complex behaviour of rate against water fraction is shown to be a combination of both mass transfer and chemical effects. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. High activity and stability during oxidation of methanol under the relatively anode environment are two main evaluation criterias for an effective anode electrocatalyst in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). Mesoporous WC samples with hollow structure were prepared by gas-solid reaction at the atmosphere of CH(4)/H(2) by using airflow spray dried ammonium metatungstate (AMT). The platinum supported on this material by impregnation-vapor phase deoxidation method served as a less expensive electro anode catalyst. XRD and SEM results showed that Pt particles were well dispersed on the surface of WC. The results showed that the Pt/WC-PME exhibited an attractive catalytic activity, and methanol oxidation process in Pt/WC-PME is affected by liquid-phase mass transfer. The results also indicated that the oxidation can be improved by raising temperatures.

Ecotoxicological screening of dust sampled throughout a Kenyan tannery was conducted using a luminescence (lux)-based bacterial biosensor for both solid and liquid assays. This was complemented by chemical analysis in an attempt to identify possible causative toxic components. The biosensor results showed a highly significant (p <0.001) difference in both solid and liquid phase toxicity in samples collected from various identified sampling points in the tannery. A positive correlation was observed between results of the solid and liquid phase techniques, for most of the sampling points indicating that the toxic contaminants were bioavailable both in the solid and liquid state. However, the results generally indicated toxicity associated with liquid phase except certain areas in solid phase such as chemical handling, buffing area and weighing. The most toxic tannery area identified was the weighing area (p <0.001), showing the lowest bioluminescence for both the solid (0.38 +/- 2.21) and liquid phases (0.01 +/- 0.001). Chromium was the metal present in the highest concentration indicating levels higher than the stipulated regulatory requirement of 0.5 mg Cr/m3 for total Cr (highest Cr concentration was at chemical handling at 209.24 mg l(-1)) in all dust samples. The weighing area had the highest Ni concentration (1.87 mg l(-1)) and the chemical handling area showed the highest Zn concentration (31.9 mg l(-1)). These results raise environmental health concerns, as occupational exposure to dust samples from this site has been shown to give rise to elevated concentrations (above the stipulated levels) of chromium in blood, urine and some body tissues, with inhalation being the main route. Health and Safety Executive (HSE), UK, and American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist (ACGIH) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), USA stipulates an occupational exposure limit of 0.5 mg Cr/m3 (8 h TWA) for total chromium. However, schedule 1 of Controls of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) regulations developed by HSE, indicate 0.05 mg m3 (8 h TWA reference periods) to be the limit for Cr (VI) exposure. The exposure limit for individual (e.g., Cr, Zn, Ni etc.) contaminants (homogeneity) was not exceeded, but potential impact of heterogeneity (multi-element synergistic effect) on toxicity requires application of the precautionary principle.

A range of chloroplumbate(II) organic salts, based on the two cations, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and trihexyl(tetradecyl) phosphonium, was prepared by ionothermal synthesis. Depending on the structure of the organic cation and on the molar ratio of PbCl2 in the product,.PbCl2, the salts were room-temperature ionic liquids or crystalline organic/inorganic hybrid materials. The solids were studied using Raman spectroscopy; the crystal structure of [C(2)mim]{PbCl3} was determined and shown to contain 1D infinite chloroplumbate(II) strands formed by edge-sharing tetragonal pyramids of pentacoordinate (PbCl5) units. The liquids were analysed using Pb-207 NMR and Raman spectroscopies, as well as viscometry. Phase diagrams were constructed based on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. Discrete anions: [PbCl4](2-) and [PbCl3](-), were detected in the liquid state. The trichloroplumbate(II) anion was shown to have a flexible structure due to the presence of a stereochemically-active lone pair. The relationship between the liquid phase anionic speciation and the structure of the corresponding crystalline products of ionothermal syntheses was discussed, and the data were compared with analogous tin(II) systems.

Herein we present a study on the physical/chemical properties of a new Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) based on N-methylacetamide (MAc) and lithium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (LiTFSI). Due to its interesting properties, such as wide liquid-phase range from -60°C to 280°C, low vapor pressure, and high ionic conductivity up to 28.4mScm at 150°C and at x=1/4, this solution can be practically used as electrolyte for electrochemical storage systems such as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and/or lithium ion batteries (LiBs). Firstly, relationships between its transport properties (conductivity and viscosity) as a function of composition and temperature were discussed through Arrhenius' Law and Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) equations, as well as by using the Walden classification. From this investigation, it appears that this complex electrolyte possesses a number of excellent transport properties, like a superionic character for example. Based on which, we then evaluated its electrochemical performances as electrolyte for EDLCs and LiBs applications by using activated carbon (AC) and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO) electrodes, respectively. These results demonstrate that this electrolyte has a good compatibility with both electrodes (AC and LiFePO) in each testing cell driven also by excellent electrochemical properties in specific capacitance, rate and cycling performances, indicating that the LiTFSI/MAc DES can be a promising electrolyte for EDLCs and LiBs applications especially for those requiring high safety and stability. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

A homogenous detection of pathogen (Giardia lamblia cysts) based on the catalytic growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been studied. In this study, centrifugal filters were employed as tools to concentrate and separate the pathogen cells, and moreover amplify the detection signal. The catalytic growth of gold nanoparticles was verified to be positively related to gold seeds concentration. On this basis, homogenous detection of the pathogenic bacteria in liquid phase was established by means of conjugating antibody to gold seeds. Under the given experimental condition, detection limit of G. lamblia cysts was determined as low as 1.088 × 103 cells ml-1. The additional nonspecific binding tests were also conducted to verify the detection specificity. This sensing platform has been proved to be a sensitive, reliable and simple method for large-scale pathogen detection, and provide valuable insight for the development of gold nanocrystals based colorimetric biosensors.

Rigid organic iminospherand cages are rendered meltable by multiple alkylation; below their melting points they can take the form of permanently porous crystals, crystals unstable to desolvation or nonporous glassy solids depending on chain length and branching; melting points as low as 50 degrees C are observed and a fully Newtonian liquid phase is obtained above 80 degrees C. Thin glassy fibres can be drawn out from a molten phase.

Methods to control the dispersion of gold in supported heterogeneous catalysts are very valuable due to the strong nanoparticle size dependence on their activity and selectivity towards many reactions. Additionally, the ability to disperse large, inactive gold nanoparticles to smaller nanoparticles provides an opportunity to reactivate, stabilise and increase the lifetime of gold catalysts making them more practical for industrial applications. Previously it has been demonstrated that the use of gas phase iodomethane (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2009, 131, 6973; Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2011, 50, 8912) was able to re-disperse gold from >20 nm particles to dimers and trimers. In the current work, we show that this technique can be applied using less hazardous halohydrocarbons treatments, both in the gas phase and the liquid phase. The ability of these individual halohydrocarbons to re-disperse gold as well as the extent to which leaching occurs is assessed.

Abstract Image

A new experimental procedure based on attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy has been developed to investigate surface species under liquid phase reaction conditions. The technique has been tested by investigating the enhanced selectivity in the hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehyde citral over a 5% Pt/SiO2 catalyst toward unsaturated alcohols geraniol/nerol, which occurs when citronellal is added to the reaction. The change in selectivity is proposed to be the result of a change in the citral adsorption mode in the presence of citronellal. Short time on stream attenuated total internal reflection infrared spectroscopy has allowed identification of the adsorption modes of citral. With no citronellal, citral adsorbs through both the C═C and C═O groups; however, in the presence of citronellal, citral adsorption occurs through the C═O group only, which is proposed to be the cause of the altered reaction selectivity.
