The direct electrochemical oxidation of ammonia has been examined in both the organic solvent dimethylformamide (DMF) and the room temperature ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)]. The corresponding voltammetric responses have been shown to be similar in each solvent with a broad oxidative wave occurring upon the introduction of ammonia to the solution and the appearance of a new reductive wave following the oxidation. The oxidative reaction process has been examined and a suitable reaction pathway has been deduced, corresponding to the formation of ammonium cations after oxidation of the ammonia. A linear response of limiting current against vol% ammonia was observed in both DMF and [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)], suggesting potential application for analytical methods.

The results detail a novel methodology for the electrochemical determination of ammonia based on its interaction with hydroquinone in DMF. It has been shown that ammonia reversibly removes protons from the hydroquinone molecules, thus facilitating the oxidative process with the emergence of a new wave at less positive potentials. The analytical utility of the proposed methodology has been examined with a linear range from 10 to 95 ppm and corresponding limit-of-detection of 4.2 ppm achievable. Finally, the response of hydroquinone in the presence of ammonia has been examined in the room temperature ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluormethylsulfonyl)imide, [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)]. Analogous voltammetric waveshapes to that observed in DMF were obtained, thereby confirming the viability of the method in either DMF or [EMIM][N(Tf)(2)] as solvent. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. The reactivity of electrogenerated bromine with cyclohexene has been studied on a platinum microelectrode by linear sweep and cyclic voltammetry in both the room temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, and the conventional aprotic solvent, acetonitrile. Variation in the voltammetric response was observed in the two solvents, indicating that the bromination reaction proceeded via separate mechanisms. To identify the different products, electrolysis was conducted on the preparative scale and NMR spectroscopy confirmed that while bromination of the organic substrate in the ionic liquid yields trans-1,2-dibromocyclohexane, in acetonitrile, trans-1-(N-acetylamino)-2-bromocyclohexane is instead obtained as the major product. The reaction mechanism for bromination in acetonitrile has been modeled using digital simulation.

Ionic liquids have been used to support a range of magnesium-and copper-based bis(oxazoline) complexes for the enantioselective Diels-Alder reaction between N-acryloyloxazolidinone and cyclopentadiene. Compared with reaction performed in dichloromethane or diethyl ether, an enhancement in ee is observed with a large increase in reaction rate. In addition, for non-sterically hindered bis(oxazoline) ligands, that is, phenyl functionalised ligands, a reversal in configuration is found in the ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide], compared with molecular solvents. Supported ionic liquid phase catalysts have also been developed using surface-modified silica which show good reactivity and enantioselectivity for the case of the magnesium-based bis(oxazoline) complexes. Poor ees and conversion were observed for the analogous copper-based systems. Some drop in ee was found on supporting the catalyst due a drop in the rate of reaction and, therefore, an increase in the contribution from the uncatalysed a chiral reaction.

The chemical equilibrium of mutual interconversions of tert-butylbenzenes was studied in the temperature range 286 to 423 K using chloroaluminate ionic liquids as a catalyst. Enthalpies of five reactions of isomerization and transalkylation of tert-butylbenzenes were obtained from temperature dependences of the corresponding equilibrium constants in the liquid phase. Molar enthalpies of vaporization of methyl-tert-butylbenzenes and 1,4-ditert-butylbenzene were obtained by the transpiration method and were used for a recalculation of enthalpies of reactions and equilibrium constants into the gaseous phase. Using these experimental results, ab initio methods (B3LYP and G3MP2) have been tested for prediction thermodynamic functions of the five reactions under study successfully. Thermochemical investigations of tert-butyl benzenes available in the literature combined with experimental results have helped to resolve contradictions in the available thermochemical data for tert-butylbenzene and to recommend consistent and reliable enthalpies of formation for this compound in the liquid and the gaseous state.

Ionic liquid crystals were obtained by coupling one or two mesogenic units (cholesterol or cyanobiphenyl) to an imidazolium cation. Anions are bromide, bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and tetrakis(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)europate(III). The mesomorphism of the compounds depends on the type and number of mesogenic units and on the type of anion. In general, the most stable mesophases are observed for the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide salts. Most of the compounds containing cholesterol moieties show enantiotropic SmA* phases over a broad temperature range, and some of them are room temperature liquid crystals. Modeling of the small-angle X-ray scattering patterns revealed the molecular arrangement in these mesophases. On the contrary, most of the compounds containing cyanobiphenyl groups exhibit monotropic lamellar or nematic mesophases, depending on the number of mesogenic units. The imidazolium salts containing the tetrakis(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonato)europate(III) anion show an intense red photoluminescence.

The task-specific ionic liquid betainium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [Hbet][Tf2N], was used to dissolve metal oxides and hydroxides. The crystal structures of the resulting metal betaine bistriflimide complexes exhibit a rich structural variety. A trimeric structure was found for the cobalt(II) compound, [Co-3(bet)(8)(Hbet)(2)(H2O)(2)][Tf2N](9)[Hbet], a tetrameric structure for the manganese(II) and zinc(II) compound, [Mn-4(bet)(10)(H2O)(4)][Tf2N](8) and [Zn-4(bet)(10)(H2O)(2)][Tf2N](8), respectively, a pentameric structure for the nickel(II) compound, [Ni-5(bet)(12)(H2O)(6)][Tf2N](10), an oxo-hydroxo-cluster formation for the lead(II) compound, [(Pb4O)Pb(OH)(bet)(8)(Tf2N)3] [Tf2N](4)center dot MeOH, and a polymeric structure for the silver(I) compound, [Ag-2(bet)(2)(Tf2N)Ag-2(bet)(2)][Tf2N](3). The zwitterionic nature of the betaine ligand and the weakly coordinating ability of the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [Tf2N]- anion facilitates the incorporation of metal ions into oligonuclear and polynuclear metal complexes.

Water solutions of representative (IC(4)mim][Cl] and [C(4)mim][Tf2N] room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) in contact with a neutral lipid bilayer made of cholesterol molecules has been investigated by molecular dynamics simulations based on an empirical force field model. The results show that both ILs display selective adsorption at the water-cholesterol interface, with partial inclusion of ions into the bilayer. In the case Of [C(4)mim][Cl], the adsorption of ions at the water-cholesterol interface is limited by a sizable bulk solubility of the IL, driven by the high water affinity of [Cl](-). The relatively low Solubility Of [C(4)mim][Tf2N], instead, gives rise to a nearly complete segregation of the IL component on the bilayer, altering its volume, compressibility, and electrostatic environment. The computational results display important similarities to the results of recent experimental measurements for ILs in contact with phospholipid model membranes (see Evans, K. O. Int. J. Mol. Sci. 2008, 9, 498-511 and references therein).
