We identify a source coincident with SN 2009kr in Hubble Space Telescope pre-explosion images. The object appears to be a single point source with an intrinsic color V - I = 1.1 +/- 0.25 and M-V = -7.6 +/- 0.6. If this is a single star, it would be a yellow supergiant of log L/L-circle dot similar to 5.1 and a mass of 15(-4)(+5) M-circle dot. The spatial resolution does not allow us yet to definitively determine if the progenitor object is a single star, a binary system, or a compact cluster. We show that the early light curve is similar to a Type IIL SN, but the prominent H alpha P-Cygni profiles and the signature of the end of a recombination phase are reminiscent of a Type IIP. The evolution of the expanding ejecta will play an important role in understanding the progenitor object.

Massively parallel networks of highly efficient, high performance Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) processors have been shown to enable FPGA-based implementation of real-time signal processing applications with performance and
cost comparable to dedicated hardware architectures. This is achieved by exploiting simple datapath units with deep processing pipelines. However, these architectures are highly susceptible to pipeline bubbles resulting from data and control hazards; the only way to mitigate against these is manual interleaving of
application tasks on each datapath, since no suitable automated interleaving approach exists. In this paper we describe a new automated integrated mapping/scheduling approach to map algorithm tasks to processors and a new low-complexity list scheduling technique to generate the interleaved schedules. When applied to a spatial Fixed-Complexity Sphere Decoding (FSD) detector
for next-generation Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, the resulting schedules achieve real-time performance for IEEE 802.11n systems on a network of 16-way SIMD processors on FPGA, enable better performance/complexity balance than current approaches and produce results comparable to handcrafted implementations.

The synthesis of cobalt-doped ZnO nanowires is achieved using a simple, metal salt decomposition growth technique. A sequence of drop casting on a quartz substrate held at 100 degrees C and annealing results in the growth of nanowires of average (modal) length similar to 200 nm and diameter of 15 +/- 4 nm and consequently an aspect ratio of similar to 13. A variation in the synthesis process, where the solution of mixed salts is deposited on the substrate at 25 degrees C, yields a grainy film structure which constitutes a useful comparator case. X-ray diffraction shows a preferred [0001] growth direction for the nanowires while a small unit cell volume contraction for Co-doped samples and data from Raman spectroscopy indicate incorporation of the Co dopant into the lattice; neither technique shows explicit evidence of cobalt oxides. Also the nanowire samples display excellent optical transmission across the entire visible range, as well as strong photoluminescence (exciton emission) in the near UV, centered at 3.25 eV. Objective: This study evaluated the changing trends in glaucoma management in Scotland between 1994 and 2004. Methods: A retrospective analysis of national health statistics in Scotland from 1994 to 2004. The Scottish morbidity record was used to collect information on all episodes of trabeculectomy. Data on number of prescriptions were gathered for individual drugs and also for groups of active ingredient. The population likely to have glaucoma (PLG) was calculated from estimates of prevalence in individuals aged 40 years and older, based on published epidemiological studies. The outcome measures were trabeculectomy rates, corrected for population likely to be at risk of glaucoma (PLG), and prescribing volume and cost for glaucoma medications. Results: Trabeculectomy rates have fallen by 67% from 46 per 1000 PLG in 1994 to 15.4 per 1000 PLG in 2004. Over the same time period, the population likely to be at risk of glaucoma (PLG) increased by 16.6%. The cost of prescribing has increased by 122% over 11 years compared with an increase in number of items per 1000 PLG by 27.5%. In 1994, ß-blockers accounted for 65.2% of prescribed drugs but by 2004 this had dropped to 33%. Since their introduction, the prescribing of prostaglandin analogues has increased rapidly and in 2004, they accounted for 39.4% of prescribed drugs. Conclusion: The increasing useof prostaglandin analogues has led to an increase in prescribing rates and a rapid increase in cost. At the same time, prescribing of ß-blockers has declined and trabeculectomy rates have fallen.

We perform an extensive study of the properties of global quantum correlations in finite-size one-dimensional quantum spin models at finite temperature. By adopting a recently proposed measure for global quantum correlations (Rulli and Sarandy 2011 Phys. Rev. A 84 042109), called global discord, we show that critical points can be neatly detected even for many-body systems that are not in their ground state. We consider the transverse Ising model, the cluster-Ising model where three-body couplings compete with an Ising-like interaction, and the nearest-neighbor XX Hamiltonian in transverse magnetic field. These models embody our canonical examples showing the sensitivity of global quantum discord close to criticality. For the Ising model, we find a universal scaling of global discord with the critical exponents pertaining to the Ising universality class.

Background: Our previous laboratory and clinical data suggested that one mechanism underlying the development of platinum resistance in ovarian cancer is the acquisition of DNA methylation. We therefore tested the hypothesis that the DNA hypomethylating agent 5-aza-2'-deoxycytodine (decitabine) can reverse resistance to carboplatin in women with relapsed ovarian cancer.
Methods: Patients progressing 6-12 months after previous platinum therapy were randomised to decitabine on day 1 and carboplatin (AUC 6) on day 8, every 28 days or carboplatin alone. The primary objective was response rate in patients with methylated hMLH1 tumour DNA in plasma.
Results: After a pre-defined interim analysis, the study closed due to lack of efficacy and poor treatment deliverability in 15 patients treated with the combination. Responses by GCIG criteria were 9 out of 14 vs 3 out of 15 and by RECIST were 6 out of 13 vs 1 out of 12 for carboplatin and carboplatin/decitabine, respectively. Grade 3/4 neutropenia was more common with the combination (60% vs 15.4%) as was G2/3 carboplatin hypersensitivity (47% vs 21%).
Conclusions: With this schedule, the addition of decitabine appears to reduce rather than increase the efficacy of carboplatin in partially platinum-sensitive ovarian cancer and is difficult to deliver. Patient-selection strategies, different schedules and other demethylating agents should be considered in future combination studies.

The human body is an extremely challenging environment for the operation of wireless communications systems, not least because of the complex antenna-body electromagnetic interaction effects which can occur. This is further compounded by the impact of movement and the propagation characteristics of the local environment which all have an effect upon body centric communications channels. As the successful design of body area networks (BANs) and other types of body centric system is inextricably linked to a thorough understanding of these factors, the aim of this paper is to conduct a survey of the current state of the art in relation to propagation and channel models primarily for BANs but also considering other types of body centric communications. We initially discuss some of the standardization efforts performed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 802.15.6 task group before focusing on the two most popular types of technologies currently being considered for BANs, namely narrowband and Ultrawideband (UWB) communications. For narrowband communications the applicability of a generic path loss model is contended, before presenting some of the scenario specific models which have proven successful. The impacts of human body shadowing and small-scale fading are also presented alongside some of the most recent research into the Doppler and time dependencies of BANs. For UWB BAN communications, we again consider the path loss as well as empirical tap delay line models developed from a number of extensive channel measurement campaigns conducted by research institutions around the world. Ongoing efforts within collaborative projects such as Committee on Science and Technology Action IC1004 are also described. Finally, recent years have also seen significant developments in other areas of body centric communications such as off-body and body-to-body communications. We highlight some of the newest relevant research in these areas as well as discussing some of the advanced topics which are currently being addressed in the field of body centric communications. We present Roche tomograms of the K4V secondary star in the cataclysmic variable AE Aqr, reconstructed from two data sets taken 9 d apart, and measure the differential rotation of the stellar surface. The tomograms show many large, cool starspots, including a large high-latitude spot and a prominent appendage down the trailing hemisphere. We find two distinct bands of spots around 22° and 43° latitude, and estimate a spot coverage of 15.4-17 per cent on the Northern hemisphere. Assuming a solar-like differential rotation law, the differential rotation of AE Aqr was measured using two different techniques. The first method yields an equator-pole lap time of 269 d and the second yields a lap time of 262 d. This shows that the star is not fully tidally locked, as was previously assumed for CVs, but has a co-rotation latitude of ˜40°. We discuss the implications that these observations have on stellar dynamo theory, as well as the impact that spot traversal across the L1 point may have on accretion rates in CVs as well as some of their other observed properties. The entropy landscape technique was applied to determine the system parameters of AE Aqr. For the two independent data sets, we find M1 = 1.20 and 1.17 M⊙, M2 = 0.81 and 0.78 M⊙, and orbital inclinations of 50° to 51° at optimal systemic velocities of γ = -64.7 and -62.9 km s-1.

Improvements in the structural performance of glulam timber beams by the inclusion of reinforcing materials can increase both the service performance and ultimate capacity. This paper describes a series of four-point bending tests conducted, under service loads and to failure, on unreinforced, reinforced and post-tensioned glulam timber beams, where the reinforcing tendon used is 12 mm dia. basalt fibre-reinforced polymer. The research is designed to evaluate the benefits offered by including an active reinforcement in contrast to the passive reinforcement typically used within timber strengthening works, in addition to establishing the effect that bonding the reinforcing tendon has on the material's performance. Further experimental tests have also been developed to investigate the long-term implications of this research, with emphasis placed upon creep and loss of post-tensioning; however, this is ongoing and is not presented in this paper. The laboratory investigations establish that the flexural strength and stiffness increase for both the unbonded and bonded post-tensioned timbers compared to the unreinforced and reinforced beams. Timber that is post-tensioned with an unbonded basalt fibre-reinforced polymer tendon shows a flexural strength increase of 2ṡ8% and an increase in stiffness of 8ṡ7%. Post-tensioned beams with a bonded basalt fibre-reinforced polymer tendon show increases in flexural strength and stiffness of 15ṡ4% and 11ṡ5% respectively.

Brain tissue from so-called Alzheimer's disease (AD) mouse models has previously been examined using H-1 NMR-metabolomics, but comparable information concerning human AD is negligible. Since no animal model recapitulates all the features of human AD we undertook the first H-1 NMR-metabolomics investigation of human AD brain tissue. Human post-mortem tissue from 15 AD subjects and 15 age-matched controls was prepared for analysis through a series of lyophilised, milling, extraction and randomisation steps and samples were analysed using H-1 NMR. Using partial least squares discriminant analysis, a model was built using data obtained from brain extracts. Analysis of brain extracts led to the elucidation of 24 metabolites. Significant elevations in brain alanine (15.4 %) and taurine (18.9 %) were observed in AD patients (p ≤ 0.05). Pathway topology analysis implicated either dysregulation of taurine and hypotaurine metabolism or alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism. Furthermore, screening of metabolites for AD biomarkers demonstrated that individual metabolites weakly discriminated cases of AD [receiver operating characteristic (ROC) AUC <0.67; p < 0.05]. However, paired metabolites ratios (e.g. alanine/carnitine) were more powerful discriminating tools (ROC AUC = 0.76; p < 0.01). This study further demonstrates the potential of metabolomics for elucidating the underlying biochemistry and to help identify AD in patients attending the memory clinic

In this reported work, the frequency diverse array concept is employed to construct an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitter that has the capability of securing wireless communication in free space directly in the physical-layer without the need for mathematical encryption. The characteristics of the proposed scheme in terms of its secrecy performance are validated via bit error rate simulation under both high and low signal to noise ratio scenarios using the IEEE 802.11 OFDM physical-layer specification.

The area and power consumption of low-density parity check (LDPC) decoders are typically dominated by embedded memories. To alleviate such high memory costs, this paper exploits the fact that all internal memories of a LDPC decoder are frequently updated with new data. These unique memory access statistics are taken advantage of by replacing all static standard-cell based memories (SCMs) of a prior-art LDPC decoder implementation by dynamic SCMs (D-SCMs), which are designed to retain data just long enough to guarantee reliable operation. The use of D-SCMs leads to a 44% reduction in silicon area of the LDPC decoder compared to the use of static SCMs. The low-power LDPC decoder architecture with refresh-free D-SCMs was implemented in a 90nm CMOS process, and silicon measurements show full functionality and an information bit throughput of up to 600 Mbps (as required by the IEEE 802.11n standard).

A compact implantable printed meandered folded dipole antenna with a volume of 101.8 mm3 and robust performance is presented for operation in the 2.4 GHz medical ISM bands. The implant antenna is shown to maintain its return loss performance in the 2360???2400 MHz, 2400???2483.5 MHz and 2483.5???2500 MHz frequency bands, simulated in eleven different body tissue types with a broad range of electrical properties. Bandwidth and resonant frequency changes are reported for the same antenna implanted in high water content tissues such as muscle and skin as well as low water content tissues such as subcutaneous fat and bone. The antenna was also shown to maintain its return loss performance as it was moved towards a tissue boundary within a simulated phantom testbed.
