Bit level systolic array structures for computing sums of products are studied in detail. It is shown that these can be sub-divided into two classes and that, within each class, architectures can be described in terms of a set of constraint equations. It is further demonstrated that high performance system level functions with attractive VLSI properties can be constructed by matching data flow geometries in bit level and word level architectures.

We propose a novel admission control policy for database queries. Our methodology uses system measurements of CPU utilization and query backlogs to determine interference between queries in execution on the same database server. Query interference may arise due to the concurrent access of hardware and software resources and can affect performance in positive and negative ways. Specifically our admission control considers the mix of jobs in service and prioritizes the query classes consuming CPU resources more efficiently. The policy ignores I/O subsystems and is therefore highly appropriate for in-memory databases. We validate our approach in trace-driven simulation and show performance increases of query slowdowns and throughputs compared to first-come first-served and shortest expected processing time first scheduling. Simulation experiments are parameterized from system traces of a SAP HANA in-memory database installation with TPC-H type workloads. © 2012 IEEE.

The scheduling problem in distributed data-intensive computing environments has become an active research topic due to the tremendous growth in grid and cloud computing environments. As an innovative distributed intelligent paradigm, swarm intelligence provides a novel approach to solving these potentially intractable problems. In this paper, we formulate the scheduling problem for work-flow applications with security constraints in distributed data-intensive computing environments and present a novel security constraint model. Several meta-heuristic adaptations to the particle swarm optimization algorithm are introduced to deal with the formulation of efficient schedules. A variable neighborhood particle swarm optimization algorithm is compared with a multi-start particle swarm optimization and multi-start genetic algorithm. Experimental results illustrate that population based meta-heuristics approaches usually provide a good balance between global exploration and local exploitation and their feasibility and effectiveness for scheduling work-flow applications. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. We introduce a general scheme for sequential one-way quantum computation where static systems with long-living quantum coherence (memories) interact with moving systems that may possess very short coherence times. Both the generation of the cluster state needed for the computation and its consumption by measurements are carried out simultaneously. As a consequence, effective clusters of one spatial dimension fewer than in the standard approach are sufficient for computation. In particular, universal computation requires only a one-dimensional array of memories. The scheme applies to discrete-variable systems of any dimension as well as to continuous-variable ones, and both are treated equivalently under the light of local complementation of graphs. In this way our formalism introduces a general framework that encompasses and generalizes in a unified manner some previous system-dependent proposals. The procedure is intrinsically well suited for implementations with atom-photon interfaces.

Pollen grains are microscopic so their identification and quantification has, for decades, depended upon human observers using light microscopes: a labour-intensive approach. Modern improvements in computing and imaging hardware and software now bring automation of pollen analyses within reach. In this paper, we provide the first review in over 15 yr of progress towards automation of the part of palynology concerned with counting and classifying pollen, bringing together literature published from a wide spectrum of sources. We
consider which attempts offer the most potential for an automated palynology system for universal application across all fields of research concerned with pollen classification and counting. We discuss what is required to make the datasets of these automated systems as acceptable as those produced by human palynologists, and present suggestions for how automation will generate novel approaches to counting and classifying pollen that have hitherto been unthinkable.

A framework supporting fast prototyping as well as tuning of distributed applications is presented. The approach is based on the adoption of a formal model that is used to describe the orchestration of distributed applications. The formal model (Orc by Misra and Cook) can be used to support semi-formal reasoning about the applications at hand. The paper describes how the framework can be used to derive and evaluate alternative orchestrations of a well know parallel/distributed computation pattern; and shows how the same formal model can be used to support generation of prototypes of distributed applications skeletons directly from the application description.

The reverse engineering of a skeleton based programming environment and redesign to distribute management activities of the system and thereby remove a potential single point of failure is considered. The Ore notation is used to facilitate abstraction of the design and analysis of its properties. It is argued that Ore is particularly suited to this role as this type of management is essentially an orchestration activity. The Ore specification of the original version of the system is modified via a series of semi-formally justified derivation steps to obtain a specification of the decentralized management version which is then used as a basis for its implementation. Analysis of the two specifications allows qualitative prediction of the expected performance of the derived version with respect to the original, and this prediction is borne out in practice.
