Medical consensus, guidelines, and position papers: A policy for the ECFS

The terms consensus, guideline and position paper are sometimes employed as if they were interchangeable, but the purpose of such documents and the robustness of advice vary as the evidence base does not have the same depth in each. The Board of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society deemed it to be helpful to provide a short commentary on the definition of these terms, on their interconnections and on how ECFS considers them in documents endorsed by the society.

Beyond Criminal Justice: An anthology of abolitionist papers presented to conferences of the European Group for the Study of Deviance and Social Control over the past decade

Beyond Criminal Justice presents a vision of a future without brutal, authoritarian and repressive penal regimes. Many of the papers brought together here have been unavailable for more than two decades. Their republication indicates not only their continuing theoretical importance to abolitionist studies but also how they provide important insights into the nature and legitimacy of criminal processes in the here and now. Contributors highlight the human consequences of the harms of imprisonment, evidencing the hurt, injury and damage of penal incarceration across a number of different countries in Europe. Focusing on penal power and prisoner contestation to such power, the moral and political crises of imprisonment are laid bare. The contributors to Beyond Criminal Justice explore the urgent need for a coherent, rational and morally and politically sophisticated theoretical basis for penal abolitionism. Advocating a utopian imagination and at the same time practical solutions already implemented in countries around Europe - alongside grappling with controversial debates such as abolitionist responses to rape and sexual violence - the book steps outside of common sense assumptions regarding 'crime', punishment and 'criminal justice'. Beyond Criminal Justice will be of interest to students of criminology, zemiology, sociology, penology and critical legal studies as well as anyone interested in rethinking the problem of 'crime' and challenging the logic of the penal rationale.

Civic engagement and the arts and humanities: a UK perspective

Higher education in the UK is in a state of flux and this is having particular impact on the humanities. On the one hand the pressure to support a STEM agenda is seen by some as forcing higher education down a narrow economic agenda, while government requirements for assessing the social and economic impact of research has raised concerns about excessive utilitarianism and a downgrading of ‘disinterested enquiry’. This paper argues that these concerns may be misplaced. The research impact agenda has the potential to promote more socially engaged research and more democratic engagement in the creation and dissemination of knowledge. In the US concerns about the democratic role of higher education more often seem to focus on the student experience. By contrast, in the UK concerns about citizenship education and democratic participation more often focus on high school students, perhaps because university students are more likely to have a formal role in institutional governance. The paper concludes that the papers in this forum have a very American feel, but the issues they address resonate on a much wider scale.

Retrieving Similar Discussion Forum Threads: A Structure based Approach

Online forums are becoming a popular way of finding useful
information on the web. Search over forums for existing discussion
threads so far is limited to keyword-based search due
to the minimal effort required on part of the users. However,
it is often not possible to capture all the relevant context in a
complex query using a small number of keywords. Examplebased
search that retrieves similar discussion threads given
one exemplary thread is an alternate approach that can help
the user provide richer context and vastly improve forum
search results. In this paper, we address the problem of
finding similar threads to a given thread. Towards this, we
propose a novel methodology to estimate similarity between
discussion threads. Our method exploits the thread structure
to decompose threads in to set of weighted overlapping
components. It then estimates pairwise thread similarities
by quantifying how well the information in the threads are
mutually contained within each other using lexical similarities
between their underlying components. We compare our
proposed methods on real datasets against state-of-the-art
thread retrieval mechanisms wherein we illustrate that our
techniques outperform others by large margins on popular
retrieval evaluation measures such as NDCG, MAP, Precision@k
and MRR. In particular, consistent improvements of
up to 10% are observed on all evaluation measures
