Two experiments examined identification and bisection of tones varying in temporal duration (Experiment 1) or frequency (Experiment 2). Absolute identification of both durations and frequencies was influenced by prior stimuli and by stimulus distribution. Stimulus distribution influenced bisection for both stimulus types consistently, with more positively skewed distributions producing lower bisection points. The effect of distribution was greater when the ratio of the largest to smallest stimulus magnitude was greater. A simple mathematical model, temporal range frequency theory, was applied. It is concluded that (a) similar principles describe identification of temporal durations and other stimulus dimensions and (b) temporal bisection point shifts can be understood in terms of psychophysical principles independently developed in nontemporal domains, such as A. Parducci's (1965) range frequency theory.

Despite strong evidence of high rates of childhood and adult trauma in schizophrenia, the area remains under-researched. Our objectives in the study were first, to examine the rates of exposure to childhood, adult and lifetime (child plus adult) trauma in a population with schizophrenia and a population with non-psychotic psychiatric diagnoses and second, to examine the effect of trauma on the symptoms of schizophrenia. Two groups, those with schizophrenia (n = 40), and those with a non-psychotic diagnosis (n = 30), were recruited. Data were collected for demographic, psychiatric and trauma histories for all participants and on psychosocial functioning and psychiatric symptomatology for the patients with schizophrenia. Childhood exposure to trauma was significantly more common in the schizophrenia group (t = 5.196, df = 68, p <0.001, Eta squared = 0.28), with the strongest relationship being childhood physical assault. In the schizophrenia group a history of trauma was significantly related to poor communication skills (r = -0.529, p <0.001) and depressive symptoms (r = 0.443, p = 0.004). Evidence that childhood exposure to trauma is more common in a population with schizophrenia is consistent with other studies and raises the possibility that such trauma is of etiological importance. Further research is required to replicate those findings, to elucidate possible pathways by which the experience of trauma may contribute to the development of schizophrenia, and to explore the relationship between a history of childhood trauma and the experience of depressive symptoms in schizophrenia.

A real-time VHF swept frequency (20–300 MHz) reflectometry measurement for radio-frequency capacitive-coupled atmospheric pressure plasmas is described. The measurement is scalar, non-invasive and deployed on the main power line of the plasma chamber. The purpose of this VHF signal injection is to remotely interrogate in real-time the frequency reflection properties of plasma. The information obtained is used for remote monitoring of high-value atmospheric plasma processing. Measurements are performed under varying gas feed (helium mixed with 0–2% oxygen) and power conditions (0–40 W) on two contrasting reactors. The first is a classical parallel-plate chamber driven at 16 MHz with well-defined electrical grounding but limited optical access and the second is a cross-field plasma jet driven at 13.56 MHz with open optical access but with poor electrical shielding of the driven electrode. The electrical measurements are modelled using a lumped element electrical circuit to provide an estimate of power dissipated in the plasma as a function of gas and applied power. The performances of both reactors are evaluated against each other. The scalar measurements reveal that 0.1% oxygen admixture in helium plasma can be detected. The equivalent electrical model indicates that the current density between the parallel-plate reactor is of the order of 8–20 mA cm-2 . This value is in accord with 0.03 A cm-2 values reported by Park et al (2001 J. Appl. Phys. 89 20–8). The current density of the cross-field plasma jet electrodes is found to be 20 times higher. When the cross-field plasma jet unshielded electrode area is factored into the current density estimation, the resultant current density agrees with the parallel-plate reactor. This indicates that the unshielded reactor radiates electromagnetic energy into free space and so acts as a plasma antenna.

Although heterothermy (hibernation and torpor) is a common feature among mammals, there is debate over whether it is a derived or ancestral trait relative to endothermic homeothermy. Determination of the physiological characteristics of primitive mammals is central to understanding the evolution of endothermy. Moreover, evaluation of physiological mechanisms responsible for endothermic heat production [e.g. non-shivering thermogenesis (NST)] is key to understanding how early mammals responded to historical climate changes and colonised different geographical regions. Here we investigated the capacity for NST and heterothermy in the Hottentot golden mole, a basal eutherian mammal. NST was measured as the metabolic response to injections of noradrenalin and heterothermy by recording body temperature in free-ranging animals. We found that hibernation and torpor occurred and that the seasonal phenotypic adjustment of NST capacity was similar to that found in other placental mammals. Using phylogenetically independent contrasts, we compared measured values of NST with those obtained from the literature. This showed that all variation in NST was accounted for by differences in phylogeny and not zoogeography. These findings lend support to the observation that NST and heterothermy occur in the Afrotheria, the basal placental mammalian clade. Furthermore, this work suggests that heterothermy, rather than homeothermy is a plesiomorphic trait in mammals and supports the notion that NST mechanisms are phylogenetically ancient.

Hypothetical contingent valuation surveys used to elicit values for environmental and other public goods often employ variants of the referendum mechanism due to the cognitive simplicity and familiarity of respondents with this voting format. One variant, the double referendum mechanism, requires respondents to state twice how they would vote for a given policy proposal given their cost of the good. Data from these surveys often exhibit anomalies inconsistent with standard economic models of consumer preferences. There are a number of published explanations for these anomalies, mostly focusing on problems with the second vote. This article investigates which aspects of the hypothetical task affect the degree of nondemand revelation and takes an individual-based approach to identifying people most likely to non-demand reveal. A clear profile emerges from our model of a person who faces a negative surplus i.e. a net loss in the second vote and invokes non self-interested, non financial motivations during the decision process.

The cancer stem cell hypothesis may explain why conventional chemotherapies are unable to fully eradicate cancers. In this study, we examined both the prognostic and predictive significance of putative cancer stem cell markers in colorectal cancer. In this study, immunohistochemistry for three candidate cancer stem cell markers (CD133, Oct-4 and Sox-2) and for six other postulated prognostic markers (CK7, CK20, Cox-2, Ki-67, p27 and p53) were performed using tissue microarrays containing 501 primary colorectal cancer cases. Receiver-operating characteristic analysis was used to determine cut-off scores for positive protein expression. Multivariate analysis revealed that positive expression for CD133 and Oct-4 was associated with significantly worse survival in patients treated by surgery alone (P=0.023 and P

Raman spectroelectrochemical and X-ray crystallographic studies have been made for the binuclear copper(I) complex, [(Ph(3)P)(2)Cu(dpq)Cu(PPh(3))(2)][BF4](2), where dpq is the bridging ligand 2,3-di(2-pyridyl)quinoxaline. The X-ray data show that the pyridine rings are twisted out of plane with respect to the quinoxaline ring which is itself non-planar. The UV/VIS spectra of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer excited state and those of the electrochemically reduced complex are similar. The resonance-Raman spectrum of the latter species exhibits little change in the frequency of the pyridinylquinoxaline inter-ring C-C bond stretching mode, compared to the ground electronic state. This suggests minimum change in the inter-ring C-C bond order in the electrochemically or charge-transfer generated radical anion. Semiempirical molecular-orbital calculations on both the neutral dpq and radical anion show two near-degenerate lowest unoccupied orbitals in the neutral species. One is strongly bonding across the inter-ring C-C bond while the other is almost nun-bonding. The Raman data suggest that it is this latter orbital which is populated in the transient and electrochemical experiments.

Surface reaction methodology was implicated in the optimization of hexavalent chromium removal onto lignin with respect to the process parameters. The influence of altering the conditions for removal of chromium(VI), for instance; solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, the dose of biosorbent, presence of other metals (Zn and Cu), presence of salts and biosorption-desorption studies, were investigated. It was found that the biosorption capacity of lignin depends on solution pH, with a maximum biosorption capacity for chromium at pH 2. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to five different isotherm models by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption equilibrium data were well interpreted by the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum biosorption capacities (q(max)) obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich and Khan isotherms for Cr(VI) biosorption are 31.6 and 29.1 mg/g. respectively. Biosorption showed pseudo second order rate kinetics at different initial concentrations of Cr(VI). The intraparticle diffusion study indicated that film diffusion may be involved in the current study. The percentage removal of chromium on lignin decreased significantly in the presence of NaHCO3 and K2P2O7 salts. Desorption data revealed that nearly 70% of the Cr(VI) adsorbed on lignin could be desorbed using 0.1 M NaOH. It was evident that the biosorption mechanism involves the attraction of both hexavalent chromium (anionic) and trivalent chromium (cationic) onto the surface of lignin. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The role of dispersion or van de Waals (VDW) interactions in imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids is studied within the framework of density functional theory, using a recently developed non-empirical functional [M. Dion, H. Rydberg, E. Schroder, D. C. Langreth, and B. I. Lundqvist, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)], as efficiently implemented in the SIESTA code [G. Roman-Perez and J. M. Soler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 096102 (2009)]. We present results for the equilibrium structure and lattice parameters of several crystalline phases, finding a general improvement with respect to both the local density (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximations (GGA). Similar to other systems characterized by VDW bonding, such as rare gas and benzene dimers as well as solid argon, equilibrium distances and volumes are consistently overestimated by approximate to 7%, compared to -11% within LDA and 11% within GGA. The intramolecular geometries are retained, while the intermolecular distances and orientations are significantly improved relative to LDA and GGA. The quality is superior to that achieved with tailor-made empirical VDW corrections ad hoc [M. G. Del Popolo, C. Pinilla, and P. Ballone, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 144705 (2007)]. We also analyse the performance of an optimized version of this non-empirical functional, where the screening properties of the exchange have been tuned to reproduce high-level quantum chemical calculations [J. Klimes, D. Bowler, and A. Michaelides, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 22, 074203 (2010)]. The results for solids are even better with volumes and geometries reproduced within 2% of experimental data. We provide some insight into the issue of polymorphism of [bmim][Cl] crystals, and we present results for the geometry and energetics of [bmim][Tf] and [mmim][Cl] neutral and charged clusters, which validate the use of empirical force fields. We address the problem of non-linearity in 2D Shape modelling of a particular articulated object: the human body. This issue is partially resolved by applying a different Point Distribution Model (PDM) depending on the viewpoint. The remaining non-linearity is solved by using Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM). A dynamic-based clustering is proposed and carried out in the Pose Eigenspace. A fundamental question when clustering is to determine the optimal number of clusters. From our point of view, the main aspect to be evaluated is the mean gaussianity. This partitioning is then used to fit a GMM to each one of the view-based PDM, derived from a database of Silhouettes and Skeletons. Dynamic correspondences are then obtained between gaussian models of the 4 mixtures. Finally, we compare this approach with other two methods we previously developed to cope with non-linearity: Nearest Neighbor (NN) Classifier and Independent Component Analysis (ICA).

Introduction: Infections by multidrug-resistant bacteria are of great concern worldwide. In many cases, resistance is not due to the presence of specific antibiotic-modifying enzymes, but rather associated with a general impermeability of the bacterial cell envelope. The molecular bases of this intrinsic resistance are not completely understood. Moreover, horizontal gene transfers cannot solely explain the spread of intrinsic resistance among bacterial strains. Areas covered: This review focuses on the increased intrinsic antibiotic resistance mediated by small molecules. These small molecules can either be secreted from bacterial cells of the same or different species (e.g., indole, polyamines, ammonia, and the Pseudomonas quinolone signal) or be present in the bacterial cell milieu, whether in the environment, such as indole acetic acid and other plant hormones, or in human tissues and body fluids, such as polyamines. These molecules are metabolic byproducts that act as infochemicals and modulate bacterial responses toward antibiotics leading to increasing or decreasing resistance levels. Expert opinion: The non-genetic mechanisms of antibiotic response modulation and communication discussed in this review should reorient our thinking of the mechanisms of intrinsic resistance to antibiotics and its spread across bacterial cell populations. The identification of chemical signals mediating increased intrinsic antibiotic resistance will expose novel critical targets for the development of new antimicrobial strategies.

1. We present a model of the ideal free distribution (IFD) where differences between phenotypes other than those involved in direct competition for resources are considered. We show that these post-acquisitional differences can have a dramatic impact on the predicted distributions of individuals.
2. Specifically, we predict that, when the relative abilities of phenotypes are independent of location, there will be a continuum of mixed evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) distributions (where all phenotypes are present in all patches).
3, When the relative strengths of the post-acquisitional trait in the two phenotypes differ between patches, however, we predict only a single ESS at equilibrium. Further, this distribution may be fully or partially segregated (with the distribution of at least one phenotype being spatially restricted) but it will never be mixed.
4, Our results for post-acquisitional traits mirror those of Parker (1982) for direct competitive traits. This comparison illustrates that it does not matter whether individual differences are expressed before or after competition for resources, they will still exert considerable influence on the distribution of the individuals concerned.

The two group practices based in a city health centre decided to prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in generic form from an agreed date. The practices' computer was used to identify the number of repeat prescriptions being issued for this group of drugs and to monitor the effectiveness of the changeover. Although both practices showed a marked increase in the level of generic prescribing there was considerable interpractice variation. Generic prescribing for one practice increased from 4% to 64% and for the other from 1% to 38% of repeat prescriptions issued for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs over the study period. The reasons for this variation, the advantages of computerized audit and the problems associated with this self-imposed audit are discussed.
