An attempt is made to immobilize the homogeneous metal chloride/EMIMCl catalyst for glucose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. To this end, ionic liquid fragments were grafted to the surface of SBA-15 to generate a heterogenized mimick of the homogeneous reaction medium. Despite a decrease in the surface area, the ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15 was largely retained. Metal chlorides dispersed in such ionic liquid film are able to convert glucose to HMF with much higher yields as is possible in the aqueous phase. The reactivity order CrCl > AlCl > CuCl > FeCl is similar to the order in the ionic liquid solvent, yet the selectivity are lower. The HMF yield of the most promising CrCl-Im-SBA-15 can be improved by using a HO:DMSO mixture as the reaction medium and a 2-butanol/MIBK extraction layer. Different attempts to decrease metal chloride leaching by using different solvents are described. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog.

Many kinetic models have appeared in literature in past decades using two main approaches: the traditional global kinetics approach, or the more complex micro-kinetics approach. Whether global or micro-kinetics, kinetic models have been based on experimental data obtained at the end of the monolith. The experimental procedure using end pipe analysis may give an accurate overview of the reaction mechanisms that occur; however, the lack of information from within the catalyst can ultimately lead to inaccuracies in the kinetic model and parameters used.

Using SpaciMS, a spatially resolved experimental technique developed at the Queen's University Belfast, information from within the catalyst can be obtained. This minimally invasive technique provides detailed information of the gas concentration and temperature profile from inside the catalytic monolith. This paper presents a kinetic model and simulations validated against experimental data obtained from three positions inside the catalyst monolith at 2, 14, and 26 mm in, using data from the SpaciMS. Also, simulations of end pipe analysis, using a commercial reactor, for the CO oxidation are presented and analyzed. The simulations presented are for varying concentrations of both CO and O2 (0.5 % and 1 % CO, 0.5 % and 2 % O2) for both the global and micro-kinetic approach.

An acid-functionalized ionic liquid was entrapped within a silica gel to yield a recyclable liquid phase catalyst for the dehydration of rac-1-phenyl ethanol. Hot filtration tests showed that the activity was within the gel. Comparison with an analogous SILP system revealed fundamental differences in the properties and behavior of the materials.

The peroxometalate-based polymer immobilized ionic liquid phase catalyst [PO4{WO(O-2)(2)}(4)]@PIILP has been prepared by anion exchange of ring opening metathesis-derived pyrrolidinium-decorated norbornene/ cyclooctene copolymer and shown to be a remarkably efficient system for the selective oxidation of sulfides under mild conditions. A cartridge packed with a mixture of [PO4{WO(O-2)(2)}(4)]@PIILP and silica operated as a segmented or continuous flow process and gave good conversions and high selectivity for either sulfoxide (92% in methanol at 96% conversion for a residence time of 4 min) or sulfone (96% in acetonitrile at 96% conversion for a residence time of 15 min). The immobilized catalyst remained active for 8 h under continuous flow operation with a stable activity/selectivity profile that allowed 6.5 g of reactant to be processed (TON = 46 428) while a single catalyst cartridge could be used for the consecutive oxidation of multiple substrates giving activity-selectivity profiles that matched those obtained with fresh catalyst.

Suitably functionalised carboxylic acids undergo a previously unknown photoredox reaction when irradiated with UVA in the presence of maleimide. Maleimide was found to synergistically act as a radical generating photoxidant and as a radical acceptor, negating the need for an extrinsic photoredox catalyst. Modest to excellent yields of the product chromenopyrroledione, thiochromenopyrroledione and pyrroloquinolinedione derivatives were obtained in thirteen preparative photolyses. In situ NMR spectroscopy was used to study each reaction. Reactant decay and product build-up were monitored, enabling reaction profiles to be plotted. A plausible mechanism, whereby photo-excited maleimide acts as an oxidant to generate a radical ion pair, has been postulated and is supported by UV/Vis. spectroscopy and DFT computations. The radical-cation reactive intermediates were also characterised in solution by EPR spectroscopy.

The electrochemical performance of one-dimensional porous La0.5Sr0.5CoO2.91 nanotubes as a cathode catalyst for rechargeable nonaqueous lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries is reported here for the first time. In this study, one-dimensional porous La0.5Sr0.5CoO2.91 nanotubes were prepared by a simple and efficient electrospinning technique. These materials displayed an initial discharge capacity of 7205 mAh g-1 with a plateau at around 2.66 V at a current density of 100 mA g-1. It was found that the La0.5Sr0.5CoO2.91 nanotubes promoted both oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions in alkaline media and a nonaqueous electrolyte, thereby improving the energy and coulombic efficiency of the Li-O2 batteries. The cyclability was maintained for 85 cycles without any sharp decay under a limited discharge depth of 1000 mAh g-1, suggesting that such a bifunctional electrocatalyst is a promising candidate for the oxygen electrode in Li-O2 batteries.

The recently discovered, high-temperature proton conductor, La0.99Sr0.01NbO4-δ, was used as a support for the electrochemical promotion of a platinum catalyst. Ethylene oxidation was used as a probe reaction in the temperature range 350-450 °C. Moderate non-Faradaic rate modification, attributable to a protonic promoting species, occurred under negative polarisation; some permanent promotion was also observed. In oxidative atmospheres, both the pO2 of the reaction mixture and the temperature influenced the type and magnitude of the observed rate modification. Rate-enhancement values of up to ρ = 1.4 and Faradaic-efficiency values approaching Λ = -100 were obtained. Promotion was observed under positive polarisation and relatively dry, oxygen-rich atmospheres suggesting that some oxygen ion conductivity may occur under these conditions. Impedance spectroscopy performed in atmospheres of 4 kPa O2/N2 and of 5 kPa H2/N2 under dry and slightly humidified (0.3 kPa H2O) conditions indicated that the electrical resistivity is heavily dominated by the grain-boundary response in the temperature range of the EPOC studies; much lower grain-boundary impedances in the wetter conditions are likely to be attributable to proton transport. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. A novel configuration for the in situ control of the catalytic activity of a polycrystalline Pt catalyst supported on a mixed ionic electronic conducting (MIEC) substrate is investigated. The modification of the catalytic activity is achieved by inducing the reverse spillover of oxygen promoting species from the support onto the catalyst surface, thus modifying the chemisorptive bond energy of the gas phase adsorbed reactants. This phenomenon is known as Electrochemical Promotion of Catalysis (EPOC). In this work we investigate the use of a wireless system that takes advantage of the mixed ionic electronic conductivity of the catalyst support (internally short-circuiting the system) in a dual chamber reactor. In this wireless configuration, the reaction takes place in one chamber of the membrane reactor while introduction of the promoting species is achieved by the use of an appropriate sweep gas (and therefore control of the oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane) on the other chamber. Experimental results have shown that the catalytic rate can be enhanced by using an oxygen sweep, while a hydrogen sweep can reverse the changes. Total rate enhancement ratios of up to 3.5 were measured. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
