The reliable measurement of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) of plasmas is one of the most important subjects of plasma diagnostics, because this piece of information is the key to understand basic discharge mechanisms. Specific problems arise in the case of RF-excited plasmas, since the properties of electrons are subject to changes on a nanosecond time scale and show pronounced spatial anisotropy. We report on a novel spectroscopic method for phase- and space-resolved measurements of the electron energy distribution function of energetic (> 12 eV) electrons in RF discharges. These electrons dominate excitation and ionization processes and are therefore of particular interest. The technique is based on time-dependent measurements during the RF cycle of excited-state populations of rare gases admixed in small fractions. These measurements yield in combination with an analytical model detailed information on the excitation processes. Phase-resolved optical emission spectroscopy allows us to overcome the difficulties connected with the very low densities (107109 cm3) and the transient character of the electrons in the sheath region. The EEDF of electrons accelerated in the sheath region can be described by a shifted Maxwellian with a drift velocity component in direction of the electric field. The method yields the high-energy tail of the EEDF on an absolute scale. The applicability of the method is demonstrated at a capacitively coupled RF discharge in hydrogen.

A crossed-beams energy-loss spectrometer has been used to investigate angular distributions for electron scattering from Ar2+ and Xe2+ ions, at a collision energy of 16 eV. For Ar2+ the measurements are compared with the predictions of a partial waves calculation based on a semi-empirical potential, where it is shown that the interference term governs the position of the observed minimum in the angular distribution.

The viscosity ? for eighteen binary mixtures cyclopentane + cyclohexane and + cyclooctane; cyclohexane + cycloheptane, + cyclooctane, + methylcyclohexane, + n-hexane, + n-heptane, + n-octane, + i-octane, + benzene, + toluene, + ethylbenzene, + p-xylene, and + propylbenzene; methylcyclohexane + n-hexane, + i-octane, and + benzene; and cyclooctane + benzene have been reported at 303.15 K over the entire range of composition. The viscosity deviations ?? and excess Gibbs energy of activation ?G*E of viscous flow based on Eyring's theory have been calculated. The effects of molecular sizes and shapes of the component molecules and of interaction energy in the mixture have been discussed. The viscosity data have been correlated with the equations of Grunberg and Nissan, Hind, McLaughlin and Ubbelohde, Tamura and Kurata, Katti and Chaudhri, McAllister, Heric and Brewer, and of Auslaender.

The results of PVT measurements of the liquid phase within the temperature range of (298 to 393) K and up to 35 MPa are presented for some aliphatic esters. Measurements were made by means of a vibrating-tube densimeter, model DMA 512P from Anton Parr. The calibration of the densimeter was performed with water and n-heptane as reference fluids. The experimental PVT data have been correlated by a Tait equation. This equation gives excellent results when used to predict the density of the esters using the method proposed by Thomson et al. (AIChE J. 1982, 28, 671-676). Isothermal compressibilities, isobaric expansivities, thermal pressure coefficients, and changes in the isobaric heat capacity have been calculated from the volumetric data.

Experimental density measurements are reported, and the derived thermodynamic properties, such as the isothermal compressibility, the isobaric expansivity, and the thermal pressure coefficient are presented as Supporting Information for several imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C2mim][NTf2], 1-heptyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C7mim][NTf2], 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C8mim][NTf2], 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate [C2mim][BF4], and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tricyanomethane [C4mim][C(CN)3] in the pressure (0.10 <p/MPa <30.00) and temperature (293.15 <T/K <393.15) domains. These ILs were chosen to provide an understanding of the influence of the cation alkyl chain length and the anion influence on the properties under study. Experimental densities are correlated with the Tait equation with an average absolute deviation (AAD) less than 0.04 %. Experimental densities are in good agreement with the densities obtained by some recent predictive methods proposed in the literature.

Based on experimental viscosity data collected from the literature and using density data obtained from a predictive method previously proposed by the authors, a group contribution method is proposed to estimate viscosity of imidazolium-, pyridinium-, and pyrrolidinium-based ILs containing hexafluorophosphate (PF6), tetrafluoroborate (BF4), bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide (Tf2N), chloride (Cl), acetate (CH3COO), methyl sulfate (MeSO4), ethyl sulfate (EtSO4), and trifluoromethanesulfonate (CF3SO3) anions, covering wide ranges of temperature, 293–393 K and viscosity, 4–21,000 cP. It is shown that a good agreement with literature data is obtained. For circa 500 data points of 29 ILs studied, a mean percent deviation (MPD) of 7.7% with a maximum deviation smaller than 28% was observed. 71.1% of the estimated viscosities present deviations smaller than 10% of the experimental values while only 6.4% have deviations larger than 20%. The group contribution method here developed can thus be used to evaluate the viscosity of new ionic liquids in wide ranges of temperatures at atmospheric pressure and, as data for new groups of cations and anions became available, can be extended to a larger range of ionic liquids.
