Varying intensities of nurse-mediated health education advice were administered to subjects over a three-month period. Mean serum total cholesterol was calculated for each group at the outset and completion of the study. A multidimensional health locus of control (MHLC) scales questionnaire was self-completed by subjects at the outset. A highly significant association between internality and reduction in serum total cholesterol in the high-intensity intervention group was observed. The completion of a MHLC scale questionnaire may assist health professionals in identifying which subjects may most benefit from high-intensity health education advice when raised serum total cholesterol is prevalent.

By depositing ceria over supported precious metal (PM) catalysts and characterizing them with in situ diffuse reflectance UV (DR UV) and in situ Raman spectroscopy, we have been able to prove a direct correlation between a decrease in ceria band gap and the work function of the metal under reducing conditions. The PM ceria interaction results in changes on the ceria side of the metal ceria interface, such that the degree of oxygen vacancy formation on the ceria surface also correlates with the precious metal work function. Nevertheless, conclusive evidence for a purely electronic interaction could not be provided by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. On the contrary, the results highlight the complexity of the PM ceria interaction by supporting a spillover mechanism resulting from the electronic interaction under reducing conditions. Under oxidizing conditions, another effect has been observed; namely, a structural modification of ceria induced by the presence of PM cations. In particular, we have been able to demonstrate by in situ Raman spectroscopy that, depending on the PM ionic radius, it is possible to create PM ceria solid solutions. We observed that this structural modification prevails under an oxidizing atmosphere, whereas electronic and chemical interactions take place under reducing conditions.

BACKGROUND: Low physical activity (PA) levels which increase the risk of chronic disease are reported by two-thirds of the general UK population. Promotion of PA by primary healthcare professionals is advocated but more evidence is needed regarding effective ways of integrating this within everyday practice. This study aims to explore the feasibility of a randomised trial of a pedometer-based intervention, using step-count goals, recruiting patients from primary care. METHOD: Patients, aged 35-75, attending four practices in socioeconomically deprived areas, were invited to complete a General Practice PA Questionnaire during routine consultations. Health professionals invited 'inactive' individuals to a pedometer-based intervention and were randomly allocated to group 1 (prescribed a self-determined goal) or group 2 (prescribed a specific goal of 2500 steps/day above baseline). Both groups kept step-count diaries and received telephone follow-up at 1, 2, 6 and 11 weeks. Step counts were reassessed after 12 weeks. RESULTS: Of the 2154 patients attending, 192 questionnaires were completed (8.9%). Of these, 83 were classified as 'inactive'; 41(10 men; 31 women) completed baseline assessments, with the mean age of participants being 51 years. Mean baseline step counts were similar in group 1 (5685, SD 2945) and group 2 (6513, SD 3350). The mean increase in steps/day was greater in groups 1 than 2 ((2602, SD 1957) vs (748, SD 1997) p=0.005). CONCLUSIONS: A trial of a pedometer-based intervention using self-determined step counts appears feasible in primary care. Pedometers appear acceptable to women, particularly at a perimenopausal age, when it is important to engage in impact loading activities such as walking to maintain bone mineral density. An increase of 2500 steps/day is achievable for inactive patients, but the effectiveness of different approaches to realistic goal-setting warrants further study.

The effect of spillover processes on the activity of a catalyst system consisting of a mixed oxygen ion and electronic conducting support La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3d and a metal catalyst (Pt) were investigated. Two types of model single-pellet catalysts were used employing Pt deposited on both sides of a dense LSCF disc pellet. One of these single pellets employed highly disperse, physically non-continuous Pt, in contrast to studies on electrochemical promotion, while the other used a low dispersion continuous film. Driving forces for promoter migration were controlled through the manipulation of the oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane. Catalyst rate modification was observed in all cases. However, it was found that there is a complex relationship between the rate modification, the driving forces for spillover and the geometrical arrangement of the catalyst on the support (i.e. catalyst dispersion).

Electrochemically modified ethylene oxidation over a PI film supported on the Na+ ion conductor beta '' alumina has been studied over a range of conditions encompassing both promotion and poisoning, The system exhibits reversible behavior, and the data are interpreted in terms of (i) Na-enhanced oxygen chemisorption and (ii) poisoning of the surface by accumulation of Na compounds. At low Na coverages the first effect results in increased competitive adsorption of oxygen at the expense of ethylene, resulting in an increased rate, At very negative catalyst potentials (high Na coverage) both effects operate to poison the system: the increased strength of the Pt-O bond and coverage of the catalytic surface by compounds of Na strongly suppress the rate, Kinetic and spectroscopic results for ethylene oxidation over a Pt(111)-Na model catalyst shed light on important aspects of the electrochemically controlled system, Low levels of Na promote the reaction and high levels poison it, mirroring the behavior observed under electrochemical control and strongly suggesting that sodium pumped from the solid electrolyte is the key species, XP and Auger spectra show that under reaction conditions, the sodium exists as a surface carbonate. Post-reaction TPD spectra and the use of (CO)-C-13 demonstrate that CO is formed as a stable reaction intermediate, The observed activation energy (56 +/- 3 kJ/mol) is similar to that measured for CO oxidation under comparable conditions, suggesting that the rate limiting step is CO oxidation. Objective. The aim of this study is to investigate the correlates of knowledge of the UK physical activity (PA) guidelines.
Method. A Northern Ireland-wide population survey (2010/2011) of 4653 adults provided cross-sectional data on PA, knowledge of guidelines and socio demographic characteristics. Multinomial logistic regression was used to investigate the associations between knowledge and socio-demographic characteristics (Model 1); and modifiable health behaviours (Model 2).
Results. Results showed that 47% of respondents were unaware of PA guidelines. Males who had a lower level of education (OR 5.91; 95% CI 1.67, 20.94), lived in more deprived areas (OR 4.80; 95% CI 1.87, 12.30), low income (OR 2.36; 95% CI 1.63, 3.41) and did no PA (OR 2.74; 95% CI 1.31, 5.76) were more likely to be unaware of the guidelines. Females who were younger (OR 1.03; 95% CI 1.02, 1.05) and reported poor health (OR 2.71; 95% CI 1.61, 4.58) were more likely to be unaware of the guidelines.
Conclusion. There is a lack of awareness about the levels of PA needed to promote health. An understanding of the characteristics of those who are unaware of the guidelines has important implications for the design of targeted, effective health promotion.
