A real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) analysis of the products of methanol oxidation in a prototype direct-methanol fuel cell operating at high temperatures (150 to 185°C) is reported here. The methanol oxidation products on platinum black and platinum-ruthenium catalyst surfaces were determined as a function of the fuel cell operating temperature, current density, and methanol/water mole ratio. Neither formaldehyde nor formic acid was detected in anode exhaust gas at all cell operating conditions. The product distributions of methanol oxidation obtained by on-line FTIRS are consistent with our previous results obtained by on-line mass spectroscopy under similar conditions. With pure methanol in anode feed, methanaldimethylacetal was found to be the main product, methyl formate and CO were also found. However, when water was present in the anode feed, the main product was CO , and the formation of methanaldimethylacetal and methyl formate decreased significantly with increase of the water/methanol mole ratio. Increase of cell operating temperature enhanced the formation of CO and decreased the formation of methanaldimethylacetal and methyl formate. Pt/Ru catalyst is more active for methanol oxidation and has a higher selectivity toward CO formation than Pt-black. Nearly complete methanol oxidation, i.e., the product was almost exclusively CO , was achieved using a Pt/Ru catalyst and a water/methanol mole ratio of 2 or higher in the anode feed at a temperature of 185°C or above.

PtRuO/Ti anodes with a varying Pt:Ru ratio were prepared by thermal deposition of a PtRuO catalyst layer onto a Ti mesh for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX, and XRD. The catalyst coating layers became porous with increase of the Ru content, and showed oxide and alloy characteristics. The relative activities of the PtRuO/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared using half-cell tests and single DMFC experiments. The results showed that these electrodes were very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 38% for a DMFC operating at 20-60 °C. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. PtRu/Ti anodes with varying Pt : Ru ratio were prepared by electrodeposition of a thin PtRu catalyst layer onto Ti mesh for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD. The catalyst coating layer shows an alloy character. The relative activities of the PtRu/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared in half cell and single DMFC experiments. The results show that these electrodes are very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 9 at.% for DMFC operating at 20°C and 11 at.% at 60°C. The PtRu/Ti anode shows a performance comparable to that of the conventional carbon-based anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 M or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen gas at 90°C. © the Owner Societies 2006.

A novel anode structure based on Ti mesh for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has been prepared by thermal deposition of ~5 µm PtRuO2 catalyst layer on ~50 µm Ti mesh. The preparation procedures and the main characteristics of the anode were studied by half-cell testing, scanning electron microscopy analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray measurement, and single-cell testing. The optimum calcination temperature is 450°C, calcination time is 90- 120 min, PtRuO2 catalyst loading is 5.0 mg cm-2, Pt precursor concentration range of solution is 0.14- 0.4 M, and solution aging time is 1 day. The performances of the anodes prepared using the solution kept within 20 days showed no significant difference. When it was used in DMFC feed with low-concentration methanol solution at 90°C, this new anode shows better performance than that of the conventional anode, because its thin hydrophilic structure is a benefit to the transport of methanol and carbon dioxide. However, due to its opening structure, when higher concentration methanol was employed, the performance of the cell with new anode became worse. © 2006 The Electrochemical Society. An anode structure based on Ti mesh has been developed for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). This new anode was prepared by electrochemical deposition of a ~ 3 µ m PtRu catalyst layer on ~ 50 µ m Ti mesh. It has a thinner structure compared to that of a porous carbon-based conventional anode. The Ti mesh anode shows a performance comparable to, and exceeding that, of the conventional anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen at 90 C. However, it shows a lower performance of the cell when higher concentrations of methanol was employed. This may be attributed to its thin and open structure, which could facilitate the transport of methanol from the flow field to the anode catalyst layer and carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. © 2006 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

The electro-oxidations of methanol and formic acid at a Ru(0001) electrode in perchloric acid solution have been investigated as functions of temperature, potential and time using in-situ FTIR spectroscopy, and the results compared to those obtained during our previous studies on the adsorption and electro-oxidation of CO under the same conditions. It was found that no dissociative adsorption or electro-oxidation of methanol takes place at the Ru(0001) at potentials 1000 mV, the oxidation of formic acid to CO was significantly increased, and the oxidation of methanol to CO and methyl formate was observed, both of which were attributed to the formation of an active RuO phase on the Ru(0001) surface.

It is essential to correctly determine the nature of the initial adsorbate in order to calculate the pathway for any given reaction. Recent literature provides conflicting information on the first step in the methanol decomposition pathway. This work sets out to establish what role the solution and the surface have to play in the initial adsorption-deprotonation process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in combination with a cluster-continuum model approach are used to resolve the nature of the adsorbing species. We show that methanol is the dominant species in solution over methoxide, and also has a smaller barrier to adsorption. The nature of the surface species is revealed to be a methanol-OH complex.

In this study, low loading platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) have been highly dispersed on reduced graphene oxide-supported WC nanocrystallites (Pt-WC/RGO) via program-controlled reduction-carburization technique and microwave-assisted method. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results show that WC nanocrystallites are homogeneously decorated on RGO, and Pt NPs with a size of ca. 3 nm are dispersed on both RGO and WC. The prepared Pt-WC/RGO is used as an electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Compared with the Pt/RGO, commercial carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C) and PtRu alloy (PtRu/C) electrocatalysts, the Pt-WC/RGO composites demonstrate higher electrochemical active surface area and excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation, such as better tolerance toward CO, higher peak current density, lower onset potential and long-term stability, which could be attributed to the characterized RGO support, highly dispersed Pt NPs and WC nanocrystallites and the valid synergistic effect resulted from the increased interface between WC and Pt. The present work proves that Pt-WC/RGO composites could be a promising alternative catalyst for direct methanol fuel cells where WC plays the important role as a functional additive in preparing Pt-based catalysts because of its CO tolerance and lower price.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of Pt/C catalysts was investigated in electrolytes of 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing varying concentrations of methanol in a half-cell. It was found that the ORR activity was improved notably in an electrolyte of 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing 0.1 mol/L CH3OH as compared with that in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4, 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing 0.5 mol/L CH3OH, or 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 containing 1.0 mol/L CH3OH electrolytes. The same tendency for improved ORR activity was also apparent after commercial Nafion (R) NRE-212 membrane was hot-pressed onto the catalyst layers. The linear sweep voltammetry results indicate that the ORR activities of the Pt/C catalyst were almost identical in the 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 + 0.1 mol/L CH3OH solution before and after coated with the Nafion (R) membrane. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results demonstrated that the resistance of the Nafion (R) membrane is smaller in the electrolyte of 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 + 0.1 mol/L CH3OH than in other electrolytes with oxygen gas feed. This exceptional property of the Nafion (R) membrane is worth investigating and can be applied in fuel cell stacks to improve the system performance. The title compound, [Ni2Cl2(C9H10NO2)(2)]center dot CH3OH, is a dinuclear unit built up by two nickel(II) complexes, bridged by two Cl atoms. The coordination geometry around each Ni-II atom can be considered as distorted square-pyramidal, with the tridendate chelate Schiff base ligands coordinating in a trans conformation through their imine N atom and phenoxy and alkoxy O atoms.

In the exploration of highly efficient direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs), how to promote the CO2 selectivity is a key issue which remains to be solved. Some advances have been made, for example, using bimetallic electrocatalysts, Rh has been found to be an efficient additive to platinum to obtain high CO2 selectivity experimentally. In this work, the mechanism of ethanol electrooxidation is investigated using first principles method. It is found that CH3CHOH* is the key intermediate during ethanol electrooxidation and the activity of β-dehydrogenation is the rate determining factor that affects the completeness of ethanol oxidation. In addition, a series of transition metals (Ru, Rh, Pd, Os and Ir) are alloyed on the top layer of Pt(111) in order to analyze their effects. The elementary steps, α-, β-C-H bond and C-C bond dissociations are calculated on these bimetallic M/Pt(111) surfaces and the formation potential of OH* from water dissociation is also calculated. We find that the active metals increase the activity of β-dehydrogenation but lower the OH* formation potential resulting in the active site being blocked. By considering both β-dehydrogenation and OH* formation, Ru, Os and Ir are identified to be unsuitable for the promotion of CO2 selectivity and only Rh is able to increase the selectivity of CO2 in DEFCs.

Methanol has been shown to promote the hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of NO with octane and toluene over 2wt% Ag/AlO catalyst for the first time. In order to understand its role in the reaction fast transient kinetic methods and in situ DRIFTS analysis have been used. The catalytic activity tests showed that the addition of methanol to the HC-SCR reaction results in a significant improvement in the low temperature activity of a Ag/AlO catalyst, despite the fact that methanol on its own is not reactive for the HC-SCR reaction. This promotional effect of methanol is dependent on the concentration of added methanol and is not necessarily associated with a higher concentration of reductant in the SCR feed. The fast transient kinetic analysis has shown that at each temperature the addition of methanol enhances the conversions of both NO and octane and the production of N with high selectivity in comparison with those observed with n-octane or toluene alone. This phenomenon is similar to the effect of H which may be associated with the release of hydrogen and ammonia during the transient switches at 250 and 300°C. Together with the fast transient experiments, the DRIFTS results showed that NCO species are formed when introducing methanol to the n-octane-SCR feed while CN species are removed/consumed from the surfaces of the Ag catalyst. These NCO species formed by adding methanol may play a vital role in promoting the catalytic activity of NO reduction and methanol itself can be an in situ source for hydrogen formation, which subsequently enhances the SCR reaction. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

We present new detections of cyanodiacetylene (HC5N) toward hot molecular cores, observed with the Tidbinbilla 34 m radio telescope (DSS–34). In a sample of 79 hot molecular cores, HC5N was detected towards 35. These results are counter to the expectation that long chain cyanopolyynes, such as HC5N, are not typically found in hot molecular cores, unlike their shorter chain counterpart HC3N. However it is consistent with recent models which suggest HC5N may exist for a limited period during the evolution of hot molecular cores.

In the present paper, a study on the influence of the alkyl chain length in N-alkyl-triethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquids, [NR,222][Tf2N] (R   = 6, 8 or 12), on the excess molar enthalpy at 303.15 K and excess molar volume within the temperature interval (283.15–338.15 K) of ionic liquid + methanol mixtures is carried out. Small excess molar volumes with highly asymmetric curves (i.e. S-shape) as a function of mole fraction composition were obtained, with negative values showing in the methanol-rich regions. The excess molar volumes increase with the increase of the alkyl-chain length of the ammonium cation of the ionic liquid and decrease with temperature. The excess enthalpies of selected binary mixtures are positive over the whole composition range and increase slightly with the length of the alkyl side-chain of the cation on the ionic liquid. Both excess properties were subsequently correlated using a Redlich–Kister-type equation, as well as by using the ERAS model. From this semipredictive model the studied excess quantities could be obtained from its chemical and physical contribution. Finally, the COSMOThermX software has been used to evaluate its prediction capability on the excess enthalpy for investigated mixtures at 303.15 K and 0.1 MPa. From this work, it appears that COSMOThermX method predicts this property with good accuracy of approx. 10%, providing at the same time the correct order of magnitude of the partial molar excess enthalpies at infinite dilution for the studied ILs,
