Two electrical techniques that are frequently used to characterize radio frequency plasmas are described: current-voltage probes for plasma power input and compensated Langmuir probes for electron energy probability functions and other parameters. The following examples of the use of these techniques, sometimes in conjunction with other diagnostic methods, are presented: plasma source standardization, plasma system comparison, power efficiency, plasma modelling and complex processing plasma mechanisms.

The purpose of this experiment was to assess the test-retest reliability of input-output parameters of the cortico-spinal pathway derived from transcranial magnetic (TMS) and electrical (TES) stimulation at rest and during muscle contraction. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle of eight individuals on three separate days. The intensity of TMS at rest was varied from 5% below threshold to the maximal output of the stimulator. During trials in which the muscle was active, TMS and TES intensities were selected that elicited MEPs of between 150 and 300 X at rest. MEPs were evoked while the participants exerted torques up to 50% of their maximum capacity. The relationship between MEP size and stimulus intensity at rest was sigmoidal (R-2 = 0.97). Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) ranged between 0.47 and 0.81 for the parameters of the sigmoid function. For the active trials, the slope and intercept of regression equations of MEP size on level of background contraction were obtained more reliably for TES (ICC = 0.63 and 0.78, respectively) than for TMS (ICC = 0.50 and 0.53, respectively), These results suggest that input-output parameters of the cortico-spinal pathway may be reliably obtained via transcranial stimulation during longitudinal investigations of cortico-spinal plasticity. The electrical conductivities of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids and of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids with different anions were determined in the temperature range between 123 and 393 K on the basis of dielectric measurements in the frequency range from 1 to 10(7) Hz. Most of the ionic liquids form a glass and the conductivity values obey the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The glass transition temperatures are increasing with increasing length of the alkyl chain. The fragility is weakly dependent on the alkyl chain length but is highly sensitive to the structure of the anion. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heritable childhood onset disorder that is marked by variability at multiple levels including clinical presentation, cognitive profile, and response to stimulant medications. It has been suggested that this variability may reflect etiological differences, particularly, at the level of underlying genetics. This study examined whether an attentional phenotype-spatial attentional bias could serve as a marker of symptom severity, genetic risk, and stimulant response in ADHD. A total of 96 children and adolescents with ADHD were assessed on the Landmark Task, which is a sensitive measure of spatial attentional bias. All children were genotyped for polymorphisms (30 untranslated (UTR) and intron 8 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs)) of the dopamine transporter gene (DAT1). Spatial attentional bias correlated with ADHD symptom levels and varied according to DAT1 genotype. Children who were homozygous for the 10-repeat allele of the DAT1 30-UTR VNTR displayed a rightward attentional bias and had higher symptom levels compared to those with the low-risk genotype. A total of 26 of these children who were medication naive performed the Landmark Task at baseline and then again after 6 weeks of stimulant medication. Left-sided inattention (rightward bias) at baseline was associated with an enhanced response to stimulants at 6 weeks. Moreover, changes in spatial bias with stimulant medications, varied as a function of DAT1 genotype. This study suggests an attentional phenotype that relates to symptom severity and genetic risk for ADHD, and may have utility in predicting stimulant response in ADHD.

In this article, we present the theory and a design methodology for a unable Quasi-Lumped Quadrature Coupler (QLQC). Because of its topology, the coupler is simply reconfigured by switching the bias of two varactor diodes via a very simple DC bias circuitry. No additional capacitors or inductors are required. A prototype at 3.5 GHz is etched on a 0.130-mm-thick layer substrate with a dielectric material of relative permittivity of 2.22. The simulated and measured scattering parameters are, presented. A pin diode-loaded active doubly periodic flat strip FSS is shown to act as a dynamic screen. It is shown that by means of d.c. bias control, we can utilize the screen in, (1) transmission mode as a dual band electromagnetic shutter, or with the inclusion of a ground plane in reflection mode, (is (2) it dual band refection canceller. (3) an amplitude shift keying (ASK) spatial modulator. The properties of the FSS are characterized using a specially designed parallel plate waveguide simulator that permits normal incidence excitation of the FSS under test. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. The design of a linearly-polarised agile antenna is presented. The antenna is fed by a quasi-lumped coupler which has the ability to tune the magnitude ratio between its two outputs from -30 dB to 15 dB by modifying the bias of two varactor diodes. In this way the relative power fed to each orthogonal port of a patch antenna can be varied. Consequently, tilt control of the radiated linearly-polarised waves is achieved over a range of 90 degrees.

In this communication we present a novel polarization-agile microstrip antenna design. To dynamically change the polarization state, the radiating patch is fed by a tunable quasi-lumped coupler. The whole structure can be dynamically altered to radiate electromagnetic waves with vertical linear, horizontal linear, right-handed circular or left-handed circular polarization simply by changing the operating mode of the quasi-lumped coupler. Due to its topology the coupler is simply reconfigured by switching the bias of two varactor diodes via a very simple DC bias circuitry: no additional capacitors or inductors are required. A prototype is fabricated with a 0.762-mm-thick upper layer substrate for the radiating element and a 0.130-mm-thick layer substrate for the coupler circuit, both with the same dielectric material relative permittivity of 2.22. The simulated and measured scattering parameters, the axial ratio in circular radiation-mode and the cross-polarization level in linear mode, the gain and the radiation patterns are presented. The agile polarization capabilities of this new antenna, as demonstrated in this communication, underscore its suitability for modern wireless communications in a multi-path propagation environment.

A method for producing a retrodirective (self-tracking) antenna, which can also be operated as a phased (selectively pointed) array through the addition of a simple switching circuit and DC bias offset adjustment, is presented. Phase adjustment to individual antenna elements is shown to be readily carried out by a simple frequency pushing technique, applied to a PLL circuit, thus replacing the requirement for additional phase shifters. Practical results when applied to a ten-element array operating at 2.4 GHz are shown for both modes of operation.

Special issue on Sensor Systems for Structural Health Monitoring Abstract—This study addresses the direct calibration of optical fiber strain sensors used for structural monitoring and is carried out in situ. The behavior of fiber-Bragg-grating-based sensor systems when attached to metal bars, in a manner representative of their use as reinforcement bars in structures, was examined and their response calibrated. To ensure the validity of the measurements, this was done using an extensometer with a further calibrationagainst the response of electrical resistance strain gauges, often conventionally used, for comparison. The results show a repeatable calibration generating a suitable geometric factor of extension to strain for these sensors, to enable accurate strain data to be obtained when the fiber-optic sensor system is in use in structural monitoring applications.

The ability of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to reinforce and enhance the electrical conductivity of polymer matrices is a function of both the aspect ratio and surface chemistry of the CNTs. Hitherto, due to the variability in MWCNT synthesis methods it has not been possible to study the effect of MWCNT aspect ratio and functionality on polymer composite properties. This paper was the first to report the correlation between MWCNT aspect ratio and functionality on the formation of electrical and rheological percolated networks. Furthermore, the fundamental ballistic conductance of MWCNTs made using arc discharge and chemical vapour deposition techniques was reported.
