The activity and nature (i e heterogeneous and/or homogeneous) of catalysts based on CsF supported on alpha-Al2O3 were investigated for the transesterification of vegetable oil with methanol. Alpha polyesters such as poly(L-lactide) and poly(glycolide) are biodegradable materials used in fracture fixation and they need to be assessed for problems associated with their degradation products. This study has compared cell responses to low molecular weight poly(L-lactide) particles, lactate monomer, poly(glycolide) particles and glycolic acid at cytotoxic and sub-cytotoxic concentrations. Murine macrophages were cultured in vitro and the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), prostaglandin E-2 (PGE(2)) and interleukin-1 alpha IL-1alpha was measured following the addition of particles or monomer. Experiments revealed that both the poly(L-lactide) and poly(glycolide) particles gave rise to dose dependent increases in LDH release and an increase in IL-1alpha and PGE(2) release. Comparisons of the poly(L-lactide) particles to the poly(glycolide) particles did not reveal any differences in their stimulation of LDH, IL-1alpha and PGE(2) release. The lactate and glycolate monomers did not increase PGE(2) or IL-1alpha release above control levels. There was no difference in biocompatibility between the poly(L-lactide) and poly(glycolide) degradation products both in particulate and monomeric form. (C) 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

A dusty plasma crystalline configuration consisting of charged dust grains of alternating charge sign (.../+/-/+/-/+/...) and mass is considered. Both charge and mass of each dust species are taken to be constant. Considering the equations of longitudinal motion, a dispersion relation for linear longitudinal vibrations is derived from first principles and then analyzed. Two harmonic modes are obtained, namely, an acoustic mode and an inverse-dispersive optic-like one. The nonlinear aspects of acoustic longitudinal dust grain motion are addressed via a generalized Boussinesq (and, alternatively, a generalized Korteweg-de Vries) description. The rate of oxidation of reduced methyl viologen (MV+4) by water, catalyzed by colloidal Pt/Al2O3, is reduced by a factor of congruent-to 5 when D2O is used as a solvent rather than H2O in the presence of a pH 4.40 acetate buffer. In contrast, the rate measured in the presence of a pH 3.05 buffer is reduced only slightly when D2O replaces H2O. H/D isotope separation factors for the methyl viologen mediated reduction of water to hydrogen catalyzed by Pt/Al2O3 are 4.22 (+/- 0.15) at pH 4.40 and 5.99 (+/- 0.11) at pH 3.05, at 25-degrees-C. These data are interpreted in terms of the electrochemical model for metal-catalyzed redox reactions with a pH-dependent mechanism for the hydrogen-evolving reaction. It is proposed that hydrogen atom combination on the catalyst surface is the rate-limiting step at pH 4.40, whereas at pH 3.05 diffusion of MV2+4 is rate limiting and hydrogen evolution proceeds via the electrochemical reaction between a surface-adsorbed hydrogen atom and a solution-phase proton.
