The contribution of electron-phonon scattering and grain boundary scattering to the mid-IR (lambda = 3.392 mum) properties of An has been assessed by examining both bulk, single crystal samples-Au(1 1 1) and Au(1 1 0)-and thin film, polycrystalline An samples at 300 K and 100 K by means of surface plasmon polariton excitation. The investigation constitutes a stringent test for the in-vacuo Otto-configuration prism coupler used to perform the measurements, illustrating its strengths and limitations. Analysis of the optical response is guided by a physically based interpretation of the Drude model. Relative to the reference case of single crystal Au at 100 K (epsilon = - 568 + i17.5), raising the temperature to 300 K causes increased electron-phonon scattering that accounts for a reduction of similar to40 nm in the electron mean free path. Comparison of a polycrystalline sample to the reference case determines a mean free path due to grain boundary scattering of similar to 17 nm, corresponding to about half the mean grain size as determined from atomic force microscopy and indicating a high reflectance coefficient for the An grain boundaries. An analysis combining consideration of grain boundary scattering and the inclusion of a small percentage of voids in the polycrystalline film by means of an effective medium model indicates a value for the grain boundary reflection coefficient in the range 0.55-0.71. In the present work we consider two aspects of the deposition of metal clusters on an electrode surface. The formation of such clusters with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope is simulated by atom dynamics. Subsequently the stability of these clusters is investigated by Monte Carlo simulations in a grand-canonical ensemble. In particular, the following systems were considered explicitly: Pd clusters on Au(111), Cu on Au(111), Ag on Au(111), Pb on Au(111) and Cu on Ag(111). The analysis of the results obtained for the different systems leads to the conclusion that optimal systems for nanostructuring are those where the metals participating have similar cohesive energies and negative heats of alloy formation. In this respect, the system Cu-Pd(111) is predicted as a good candidate for the formation of stable clusters. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A model is presented for obtaining the step formation energy for metallic islands on (1 1 1) surfaces from Monte Carlo simulations. This model is applied to homo (Cu/Cu(1 1 1), Ag/Ag(1 1 1)) and heteroepitaxy (Ag/Pt(1 1 1)) systems. The embedded atom method is used to represent the interaction between the particles of the system, but any other type of potential could be used as well. The formulation can also be employed to consider the case of other single crystal surfaces, since the higher barriers for atom motion on other surfaces are not a hindrance for the simulation scheme proposed.

The atomic structures of gold supported on (111) and (110) surfaces of CeO2 have been studied using density-functional theory calculations. A single Au atom is placed on three adsorption sites on the surfaces; the stoichiometric surfaces, an oxygen vacancy and a Ce-vacancy. It is found that (i) the Au adsorption energies are in the following order: E-ad(Ce-vacancy) > E-ad(O-vacancy) > E-ad(stoichiometric surface); and (ii) the Au atom adsorption on the Ce-vacancy activates O atoms nearby. One 0 atom is less stable than that in O-2 in the gas phase and another O atom is much easier to remove compared to that of the stoichiometric surfaces. These results suggest that the Au adsorption on Ce-vacancies not only creates an O-vacancy but also activates an O atom nearby. This provides a piece of direct evidence that Au adsorption on a Ce-vacancy may be responsible for some unique catalytic properties of Au/CeO2. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Density functional theory calculations are used to study the stability of molecularly adsorbed CO and CN over transition metal surfaces. The minimum energy reaction pathways, corresponding reaction barriers (E-a), and reaction enthalpies (Delta H) for the dissociation of CO and CN to atomic products over the 4d transition metals from Zr to Pd have been determined. CO is found to be the more stable adsorbate on the right hand side of the period (from Tc onwards), whereas CN is the more stable surface species on the early metals (Zr, Nb and Mo). A single linear relationship is found to exist that correlates the barriers of both reactions with their respective reaction enthalpies. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CO dissociation and O removal (water formation) are two important processes in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In this study, both processes are studied on the flat and stepped Co(0 0 0 1) using density functional theory. It is found that (i) it is difficult for CO to dissociate on the flat Co(0 0 0 1) due to the high barrier of 1.04 eV relative to the CO molecule in the gas phase; (ii) the stepped Co(0 0 0 1) is much more favoured for CO dissociation; (iii) the first step in water formation, O + H --> OH, is unlikely to occur on the flat Co(0 0 0 1) due to the high barrier of 1.72 eV, however, this reaction can become feasible on steps where the barrier is reduced to 0.73 eV; and (iv) the barrier in the second step, OH + H --> H2O, on steps is higher than that on the flat surface. To shed light on stepwise addition reactions in ammonia synthesis, density functional theory calculations are carried out to investigate NHx (x = 1-3) formation on Ru(0001). The reactions on a flat surface are first examined. Transition states and reaction barriers are determined. It is found that the reaction barriers for these stepwise addition reactions are rather high. For example, the barrier for NH hydrogenation is calculated to be 1.28 eV, which is comparable with that of N-2 dissociation. One of the stepwise addition reactions, NH + H --> NH2, on a stepped surface is also considered. Interestingly, the reaction barrier is found to be significantly lower than that on the flat surface, but is considerably higher than that of N-2 dissociation on the same stepped surface. In addition, the coverage effect on the reaction energetics is also addressed. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Interferometry has been used to investigate the spatio-temporal evolution of electron number density following 248 nm laser ablation of a magnesium target. Fringe shifts were measured as a function of laser power density for a circular spot obtained using a random phase plate. Line averaged electron number densities were obtained at delay times up to ∼100 ns after the laser pulse. Density profiles normal to the target surface were recorded for power densities on target in the range 125–300 MW cm−2.

Simultaneous optical absorption and laser-induced fluorescence measurements have been used to map the three-dimensional number densities of ground-state ions and neutrals within a low-temperature KrF laser-produced magnesium plasma expanding into vacuum. Data is reported for the symmetry plane of the plasma, which includes the laser interaction point at a delay of 1 μs after the ∼30 ns KrF laser ablation pulse and for a laser fluence of 2 J cm−2 on target. The number density distributions of ion and neutral species within this plane indicate that two distinct regions exist within the plume; one is a fast component containing ions and neutrals at maximum densities of ∼3×1013 cm−3 and ∼4×1012 cm−3, respectively and the second is a high-density region containing slow neutral species, at densities up to ∼1×1015 cm−3.

Scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip-induced light emission from Au and Ag has been studied. Thin film samples similar to100nm thick were prepared by thermal evaporation at 0.5nm/s onto a room-temperature glass substrate to produce grains of 20-50nm in lateral dimension at the surface. Light emission from the samples in the STM was quasi-simultaneously recorded with the topography, at 1.8V tip bias and 3-40nA current, alternating pixel by pixel at the same bias. Typically, a surface scan range of 150 nm x 150 nm was surveyed. Au, W and PtIr tips were used.
