The method described here cannot fully replace the analysis of large columns by small test columns (microcolumns). The procedure, however, is suitable for speeding up the determination of adsorption parameters of dye onto the adsorbent and for speeding up the initial screening of a large adsorbent collection that can be tedious if a several adsorbents and adsorption conditions must be tested. The performance of methylene blue (MB), a basic dye, Cibacron reactive black (RB) and Cibacron reactive yellow (RY) was predicted in this way and the influence of initial dye concentration and other adsorption conditions on the adsorption behaviour were demonstrated.

The investigations into structural changes which occur during adsorbent modification and the adsorption mechanisms are essential for an effective design of adsorption systems. Manganese oxides were impregnated onto diatomite to form the type known as delta-birnessite. Initial investigations established the effectiveness of manganese oxides-modified diatomite (MOMD) to remove basic and reactive dyes from aqueous solution. The adsorption capacity of MOMD for methylene blue (MB), hydrolysed reactive black (RB) and hydrolysed reactive yellow (RY) was 320, 419, and 204 mg/g, respectively. Various analytical techniques were used to characterise the structure and the mechanisms of the dye adsorption process onto MOMD such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic absorption spectrometry (A.A.). A small shift to higher values of the cl-spacing of dye/MOMD was observed indicating that a small amount of the dye molecules were intercalated in the MOMD structure and other molecules were adsorbed on the external surface of MOMD. Two mechanisms of dye adsorption onto MOMD were proposed; intercalation of the dye in the octahedral layers and adsorption of the dye on the MOMD external surface. Moreover, the results demonstrated that the MOMD structure was changed upon insertion of MB and RY with an obvious decrease in the intensity of the second main peak of the MOMD X-ray pattern. Imidazolium, pyridinium, pyrrolidinium, piperidinium, morpholinium, and quaternary ammonium bis(trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl)imide salts were functionalized with a carboxyl group. These ionic liquids are useful for the selective dissolution of metal oxides and hydroxides. Although these hydrophobic ionic liquids are immiscible with water at room temperature, several of them form a single phase with water at elevated temperatures. Phase separation occurs upon cooling. This thermomorphic behavior has been investigated by H-1 NMR, and it was found that it can be attributed to the temperature-dependent hydration and hydrogen-bond formation of the ionic liquid components. The crystal structures of four ionic liquids and five metal complexes have been determined.

Protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide is an ionic liquid with the ability to dissolve large quantities of metal oxides. This metal-solubilizing power is selective. Soluble are oxides of the trivalent rare earths, uranium(VI) oxide, zinc(II) oxide, cadmium( II) oxide, mercury( II) oxide, nickel( II) oxide, copper(II) oxide, palladium(II) oxide, lead(II) oxide, manganese( II) oxide, and silver( I) oxide. Insoluble or very poorly soluble are iron(III), manganese(IV), and cobalt oxides, as well as aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide. The metals can be stripped from the ionic liquid by treatment of the ionic liquid with an acidic aqueous solution. After transfer of the metal ions to the aqueous phase, the ionic liquid can be recycled for reuse. Betainium bis( trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide forms one phase with water at high temperatures, whereas phase separation occurs below 55.5 degrees C ( temperature switch behavior). The mixtures of the ionic liquid with water also show a pH-dependent phase behavior: two phases occur at low pH, whereas one phase is present under neutral or alkaline conditions. The structures, the energetics, and the charge distribution of the betaine cation and the bis( trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion, as well as the cation-anion pairs, were studied by density functional theory calculations.

The new complexes [Pt(dppp)(py)(2)][OTf](2), 1, [Pt(dppp)(2-ap)(2)][OTf](2), 2, [(dppp)Pt(mu -OH){mu -NH(C5H3N)NH2}Pt(dppp)][OTf](2), 3 (py=pyridine, 2-ap=2-aminopyridine, NH(C5H3N)NH2=2,6-diaminopyridine anion, dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, OTf=O3SCF3) have been prepared via reactions between [Pt(dppp)(OTf)(2)] and pyridine, 2-aminopyridine or 2,6-diaminopyridine (2,6-dap) respectively. The amines exhibit a range of co-ordination modes. Pyridine and 2-aminopyridine co-ordinate to platinum through endo-nitrogen atoms in complexes 1 and 2, the latter existing as a pair of rotomers due to the steric hindrance introduced by the 2-substituent. However, 2,6-diaminopyridine co-ordinates to platinum through the exo-nitrogen of one amino group, to give the unusual mu -amido complex 3. Reaction of the known orotate chelate complex [Pt(PEt3)(2)(N,O-HL)] [HL=orotate, the dianion of 2,6-dioxo-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid (orotic acid)] with 2,6-dap gave [Pt(PEt3)(2)(2,6-dap)(N-HL)] 4, which contains an unconventional monodentate orotate ligand. In this co-ordination mode the orotate retains an ADA hydrogen bonding site and was found to co-crystallise with 2,6-dap via complementary ADA:DAD triple hydrogen bonds to give [Pt(PEt3)(2)(N-HL)(2,6-dap)].2,6-dap, 5. Complex 5 exhibits a helical chain structure of associated [1+1] adducts in the solid state.

The basic principles of semiconductor photochemistry, particularly using titania as a semiconductor photocatalyst, are discussed. When a platinum group metal or its oxide is deposited onto the surface of a sensitised semiconductor the overall efficiency of the reactions it takes part in are often improved, especially when the deposits are used as hydrogen and oxygen catalysts, respectively. Methods of depositing metal or metal oxide are examined, and a particular focus is given to a photodeposition process that uses a sacrificial electron donor. Platinum group metal and platinum group metal oxide coated semiconductor photocatalysts are prominent in heterogeneous systems that are capable of the photoreduction, oxidation and cleavage of water. There is a recent renaissance in work on water-splitting semiconductor-sensitised photosystems, but there are continued concerns over their irreproducibility, longevity and photosynthetic nature.

The kinetics of oxidative dissolution of a number of different samples of chromium(III) oxide by periodate ions in 1 mol dm-3 HClO4 solution have been studied and the results interpreted using the inverse-cubic rate law. The metaperiodate acts as a two-electron oxidant and the overall reaction stoichiometry involves the reaction of 3 mol of periodate with 1 mol of Cr(III) oxide. From a detailed study of the kinetics of dissolution the rate-determining step appears to be the reaction between an adsorbed periodate ion and its associated Cr(III) oxide surface site, with inhibition by one of the reaction products, iodate, through competitive adsorption. Analysis of the kinetic data generates values for the Langmuir adsorption coefficients for periodate and iodate ions on highly hydrated Cr(III) oxide of 84 +/- 8 and 2600 +/- 370 dm3 mol-1, respectively. The Cr(III) oxide-periodate reaction has a high overall activation energy, 82 +/- 6 kJ mol-1. The kinetics of dissolution of highly hydrated Cr(III) oxide under conditions in which the simple inverse-cubic rate law function does not apply can be successfully predicted using a simple kinetic model.

The chemoenzymatic synthesis of a Lewis basic phosphine-phosphine oxide organocatalyst from a cis-dihydrodiol metabolite of bromobenzene proceeds via a palladium-catalysed carbon-phosphorus bond coupling and a novel room temperature Arbuzov [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of an allylic diphenylphosphinite. Allylation of aromatic aldehydes were catalysed by the Lewis basic organocatalyst giving homoallylic alcohols in up to 57% ee. This compound also functioned as a ligand for rhodium-catalysed asymmetric hydrogenation of acetamidoacrylate giving reduction products with ee values of up to 84%.

Single oxides of Ti and Zr incorporated SBA-15 were prepared and characterized by N-2 adsorption, NMR, and XPS techniques. Si-29 MAS NMR results suggest the formation of Si-O-X linkages (X: Ti or Zr) by an increase in the ratio of Q(3)/Q(4) in the presence of Ti or Zr. XPS analysis of Ti-SBA-15 catalysts indicate the presence of Ti-O-Si bonds in addition to Ti-O-Ti and Si-O-Si bonds, supporting the NMR evidence.
