Representing a new category of polymer-drug conjugates, brush polymer-drug conjugates were prepared by ring-opening metathesis copolymerization. Following judicious structural design, these conjugates exhibited well-shielded drug moieties, significant water solubility, well-defined nanostructures, and acid-triggered drug release.

This paper describes the extraction of C5–C8 linear α-olefins from olefin/paraffin mixtures of the same carbon number via a reversible complexation with a silver salt (silver bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, Ag[Tf2N]) to form room temperature ionic liquids [Ag(olefin)x][Tf2N]. From the experimental (liquid + liquid) equilibrium data for the olefin/paraffin mixtures and Ag[Tf2N], 1-pentene showed the best separation performance while C7 and C8 olefins could only be separated from the corresponding mixtures on addition of water which also improves the selectivity at lower carbon numbers like the C5 and C6, for example. Using infrared and Raman spectroscopy of the complex and Ag[Tf2N] saturated by olefin, the mechanism of the extraction was found to be based on both chemical complexation and the physical solubility of the olefin in the ionic liquid ([Ag(olefin)x][Tf2N]). These experiments further support the use of such extraction techniques for the separation of olefins from paraffins.

This paper describes the extraction of C5-C8 linear α-olefins from olefin/paraffin mixtures of the same carbon number using silver(I)/N,N-dimethylbenzamide bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N]) or silver(I)/propylamine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ag(PrNH2)2][Tf2N]) as the extracting agent. The separation performance of the system increased with increasing chain length. [Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N] appeared to outperform [Ag(PrNH2)2][Tf2N] in terms of both selectivity and distribution coefficient. The [Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N] system was successfully modeled using the universal quasi-chemical activity coefficient (UNIQUAC) model. These results support the potential future development of amine/amide-based ligands for producing soluble silver complexes useful for the separation of olefins from paraffins.

In this work, 1-hexene was extracted from its mixtures with n-hexane in varying ratios using a task specific ionic liquid. Herein, the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate, [BMIM][NO3], was used and examined with and without the addition of a metal salt. The impact of water on both selectivity and distribution coefficient was also tested. Four potential metal salts were investigated, the results of which demonstrate that the dissolution of transition-metal salts in the IL improves the separation of 1-hexene from n-hexane through metal-olefin complexation. Additionally, the presence of water in IL solutions containing metal salt enhances this selectivity. Finally, UNIFAC was used to correlate the experimental LLE data with good accuracy.

The chain growth probability (alpha value) is one of the most significant parameters in Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis. To gain insight into the chain growth probability, we systematically studied the hydrogenation and C-C coupling reactions with different chain lengths on the stepped Co(0001) surface using density functional theory calculations. Our findings elucidate the relationship between the barriers of these elementary reactions and the chain length. Moreover, we derived a general expression of the chain growth probability and investigated the behavior of the alpha value observed experimentally. The high methane yield results from the lower chain growth rate for C-1 + C-1 coupling compared with the other coupling reactions. After C-1, the deviation of product distribution in FT synthesis from the Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution is due to the chain length-dependent paraffin/olefin ratio. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. New low-cost ionic liquids containing methyl- and ethyl-sulfate anions can be easily and efficiently prepared under ambient conditions by the reaction of 1-alkylimidazoles with dimethyl sulfate and diethyl sulfate. The preparation and characterization of a series of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium alkyl sulfate and 1,2,3-trialkylimidazolium alkyl sulfate salts are reported. 1,3-Dialkylimidazolium salts containing at least one non-methyl N-alkyl substituent are liquids at, or below room, temperature. Three salts were crystalline at room temperature, the single crystal X-ray structure of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate was determined and shows the formation of discrete ribbons comprising of two anion-cation hydrogen-bonded chains linked via intra-chain hydrogen-bonding, but little, or no inter-ribbon hydrogen-bonding. The salts are stable, water soluble, inherently 'chloride-free', display an electrochemical window of greater than 4 V, and can be used as alternatives to the corresponding halide salts in metathesis reactions to prepare other ionic liquids including 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate.

New ionic liquids containing ( 2- hydroxypropyl)- functionalized imidazolium cations have been synthesized by the atom- efficient, room temperature reaction of 1- methylimidazole with acid and propylene oxide; the acid providing the anionic component of the resultant ionic liquids. The incorporation of the secondary hydroxyl- functionality in the cation causes some interesting modifications to the behavior of these ionic liquids, increasing hydrophilicity and resulting in the unprecedented formation of liquid - liquid biphases with acetone. The single crystal structure of 1-( 2- hydroxypropyl)- 3- methylimidazolium tetraphenylborate, prepared by metathesis of the corresponding chloride- containing ionic liquid, has also been determined.

Choline saccharinate and choline acesulfamate are two examples of hydrophilic ionic liquids, which can be prepared from easily available starting materials (choline chloride and a non-nutritive sweetener). The (eco)toxicity of these ionic liquids in aqueous solution is very low in comparison to other types of ionic liquids. A general method for the synthesis and purification of hydrophilic ionic liquids is presented. The method consists of a silver-free metathesis reaction, followed by purification of the ionic liquid by ion-exchange chromatography. The crystal structures show a marked difference in hydrogen bonding between the two ionic liquids, although the saccharinate and the acesulfamate anions show structural similarities. The optimized structures, the energetics, and the charge distribution of cation-anion pairs in the ionic liquids were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and second-order (Moller-Plesset) perturbation theory calculations. The occupation of the non-Lewis orbitals was considered to obtain a qualitative picture of the Lewis structures. The calculated interaction energies and the dipole moments for the ion pairs in the gas phase were discussed.

The dimerisation of cyclooctene (COE) to 1,9-cyclohexadecadiene, a molecule of interest to the fragrance industry, has been achieved using ruthenium catalysts in organic solvents with significantly better selectivities (47-74%) and yields (39-60%) than previously reported (34% and 30%, respectively). Grubbs' first and second generation catalysts, the Hoveyda-Grubbs' catalyst and a phosphonium alkylidene catalyst were tested in a range of organic solvents and ionic liquids (ILs), including 1:1 IL/dichloromethane mixtures and biphasic IL + pentane systems. The best results (74% selectivity, 60% yield) were obtained using Grubbs' first generation catalyst in 1,2-dichloroethane. The formation of trimer, tetramer and other higher molecular mass products were found to be favoured at low catalyst loadings (0.77 mM). Studies of metathesis reactions using 1,9-cyclohexadecadiene as substrate indicated that the monomer-dimer and monomer-trimer reactions are faster than the dimer-dimer reaction. The use of IL media allowed for the recyclability of the catalyst, although a drop in the yield of dimer generally occurred after the first run. Heterogeneized catalysts, where the IL-catalyst system was immobilised onto silica, resulted in fast reactions leading to poor yields of dimer. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The cure of polydicyclopentadiene conducted by ring-opening metathesis polymerisation in the presence of a Grubbs catalyst was studied using non-invasive Raman spectroscopy. The spectra of the monomer precursor and polymerised product were fully characterised and all stages of polymerisation monitored. Because of the monomer's high reactivity, the cure process is adaptable to reaction injection moulding and reactive rotational moulding. The viscosity of the dicyclopentadiene undergoes a rapid change at the beginning of the polymerisation process and it is critical that the induction time of the viscosity increase is determined and controlled for successful manufacturing. The results from this work show non-invasive Raman spectroscopic monitoring to be an effective method for monitoring the degree of cure, paving the way for possible implementation of the technique as a method of real-time analysis for control and optimisation during reactive processing. Agreement is shown between Raman measurements and ultrasonic time of flight data acquired during the initial induction period of the curing process. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A linear cation-decorated polymeric support with tuneable surface properties and microstructure has been prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerisation (ROMP) of a pyrrolidinium-functionalised norbornene-based monomer with cyclooctene. The derived peroxophosphotungstate-based polymer-immobilised ionic liquid phase (PIILP) catalyst is an efficient and recyclable system for the epoxidation of allylic alcohols and alkenes, with only a minor reduction in performance on successive cycles.
