Several novel phosphoramidites have been prepared by reaction of the primary amines para-vinylaniline, ortho-anisidine, 2-methoxyphenyl(4-vinylbenzyl)amine, 8-aminoquinoline and 3-vinyl-8-aminoquinoline with (S)-1,1'-bi-2-naphthylchlorophosphite, in the presence of base. Rhodium(l) complexes of these phosphoramidites catalyse the asymmetric hydrogenation of dimethylitaconate and dehydroamino acids and esters giving ee values up to 95%. Soluble non-cross linked polymers of the para-vinylaniline and 3-vinyl-8-aminoquinoline-based phosphoramidites have been prepared by free radical co-polymerisation with styrene in the presence of AIBN as initiator. The corresponding [Rh(COD)](+) complexes serve as recyclable catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation dimethylitaconate and dehydroamino acids and esters to give ee values up to 80%. Predicable and controlled degradation is not only central to the accurate delivery of bioactive agents and drugs, it also plays a vital role in key aspects of bone tissue engineering. The work addressed in this paper investigates the utilisation of e-beam irradiation in order to achieve a controlled (surface) degradation profile. This study focuses on the modification of commercially and clinically relevant materials, namely poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), poly(L-lactide-hydroxyapatite) (PLLA-HA), poly(L-lactide-glycolide) co-polymer (PLG) and poly(L-lactide-DL-lactide) co-polymer (PLDL). Samples were subjected to irradiation treatments using a 0.5 MeV electron beam with delivered surface doses of 150 and 500 kGy. In addition, an acrylic attenuation shield was used for selected samples to control the penetration of the e-beam. E-beam irradiation induced chain scission in all polymers, as characterized by reduced molecular weights and glass transition temperatures (T-g). Irradiation not only produced changes in the physical properties of the polymers but also had associated effects on surface erosion of the materials during hydrolytic degradation. Moreover, the extent to which both mechanical and hydrolytic degradation was observed is synonymous with the estimated penetration of the beam (as controlled by the employment of an attenuation shield). Disguising a metal complex as a micelle by using amphiphilic phosphine ligands enables it to switch between a coordination polymer and a discrete cage in response to solvent polarity or pH; this medium-dependent behaviour of the complex is rational because it parallels that of true micelles.

We present surface enhanced Raman optical activity (SEROA), as well as Raman, SERS and ROA, spectra of D- and L-ribose. By employing a gel forming polyacrylic acid to control colloid aggregation and associated birefringent artefacts we observe the first definitive proof of SEROA through measurement of mirror image bands for the two enantiomers.

Electrochemical capacitors, also known as supercapacitors, are becoming increasingly important components in energy storage, although their widespread use has not been attained due to a high cost/ performance ratio. Fundamental research is contributing to lowered costs through the engineering of new materials. Currently the most viable materials used in electrochemical capacitors are biomassderived and polymer-derived activated carbons, although other carbon materials are useful research tools. Metal oxides could result in a step change for electrochemical capacitor technology and is an exciting area of research. The selection of an appropriate electrolyte and electrode structure is fundamental in determining device performance. Although there are still many uncertainties in understanding the underlying mechanisms involved in electrochemical capacitors, genuine progress continues to be made. It is argued that a large, collaborative international research programme is necessary to fully develop the potential of electrochemical capacitors.

This paper provides an overview of research on modelling of the structure–property interactions of polymer nanocomposites in manufacturing processes (stretch blow moulding and thermoforming) involving large-strain biaxial stretching of relatively thin sheets, aimed at developing computer modelling tools to help producers of materials, product designers and manufacturers exploit these materials to the full, much more quickly than could be done by experimental methods alone. The exemplar systems studied are polypropylene and polyester terephalate, with nanoclays. These were compounded and extruded into 2mm thick sheet which was then biaxially stretched at 155°C for the PP and 90 to 100°C for the PET. Mechanical properties were determined for the unstretched and stretched materials, together with TEM and XRD studies of structure. Multi-scale modelling, using representative volume elements is used to model the properties of these products.

Scission of a supramolecular polymer-metal complex can be carried out using collapsing cavitation bubbles created by ultrasound. Although the most plausible scission mechanism of the coordinative bonds is through mechanical force, the influence of radicals and high hot-spot temperatures on scission has to be considered. A silver(I)-N-heterocyclic carbene complex was exposed to 20 kHz ultrasound in argon, nitrogen, methane, and isobutane saturated toluene. Scission percentages were almost equal under argon, nitrogen, and methane. Radical production differs by a factor of 10 under these gases, indicating that radical production is not a significant contributor to the scission process. A model to describe the displacement of the bubble wall, strain rates, and temperature in the gas shows that critical strain rates for coil-to-stretch transition, needed for scission, are achieved at reactor temperatures of 298 K, an acoustic pressure of 1.2 x 10(5) Pa, and an acoustic frequency of 20 kHz. Lower scission percentages were measured under isobutane, which also shows lower strain rates in model simulations. The activation of the polymer-metal complexes in toluene under the influence of ultrasound occurs through mechanical force.
