Heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of a series of thioethers (2-thiomethylpyrimidine, 2-thiomethyl-4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidine, 2-thiobenzylpyrimidine, 2-thiobenzyl-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine, thioanisole, and n-heptyl methyl sulfide) was performed in ionic liquids by using MCM-41 and UVM-type mesoporous catalysts containing Ti, or Ti and Ge. A range of triflate, tetrafluoroborate, trifluoroacetate, lactate and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide-based ionic liquids were used. The oxidations were carried out by using anhydrous hydrogen peroxide or the urea-hydrogen peroxide adduct and showed that ionic liquids are very effective solvents, achieving greater reactivity and selectivity than reactions performed in dioxane. The effects of halide and acid impurities on the reactions were also investigated. Recycling experiments on catalysts were carried out in order to evaluate Ti leaching and its effect on activity and selectivity.

A series of phosphorodiamidite reagents have been readily prepared using bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide based ionic liquids and compared with their syntheses in conventional organic solvents. This method demonstrates a versatile procedure that allows access to both known and novel phosphorodiamidite reagents, whilst addressing issues such as moisture sensitivity and product selectivity present in current molecular based protocols. This method negates the need for reagent purification, whilst allowing for the reactions to be conducted at high concentrations. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

An attempt is made to immobilize the homogeneous metal chloride/EMIMCl catalyst for glucose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. To this end, ionic liquid fragments were grafted to the surface of SBA-15 to generate a heterogenized mimick of the homogeneous reaction medium. Despite a decrease in the surface area, the ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15 was largely retained. Metal chlorides dispersed in such ionic liquid film are able to convert glucose to HMF with much higher yields as is possible in the aqueous phase. The reactivity order CrCl > AlCl > CuCl > FeCl is similar to the order in the ionic liquid solvent, yet the selectivity are lower. The HMF yield of the most promising CrCl-Im-SBA-15 can be improved by using a HO:DMSO mixture as the reaction medium and a 2-butanol/MIBK extraction layer. Different attempts to decrease metal chloride leaching by using different solvents are described. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog.

The asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction between N-acryloyloxazolidinone and cyclopentadiene and the Mukaiyama-aldol reaction between methylpyruvate and 1-phenyl-1-trimethylsilyloxyethene have been catalysed by heterogeneous copper(II)-bis(oxazoline)-based polymer immobilised ionic liquid phase (PIILP) systems generated from a range of linear and cross linked ionic polymers. In both reactions selectivity and ee were strongly influenced by the choice of polymer. A comparison of the performance of a range of Cu(II)-bis(oxazoline)-PIILP catalyst systems against analogous supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) heterogeneous catalysts as well as their homogeneous counterparts has been undertaken and their relative merits evaluated.

Aiming at inexpensive Brønsted-acidic ionic liquids, suitable for industrial-scale catalysis, a family of protonic ionic liquids based on nitrogen bases and sulfuric acid has been developed. Variation of the molar ratio of sulfuric acid, χH2SO4, was used to tune acidity. The liquid structure was studied using 1H NMR and IR spectroscopies, revealing the existence of hydrogen-bonded clusters, [(HSO4)(H2SO4)]−, for χH2SO4 > 0.50. Acidity, quantified by Gutmann Acceptor Number (AN), was found to be closely related to the liquid structure. The ionic liquids were employed as acid catalysts in a model reaction; Fischer esterification of acetic acid with 1-butanol. The reaction rate depended on two factors; for χH2SO4 > 0.50, the key parameter was acidity (expressed as AN value), while for χH2SO4 > 0.50 it was the mass transport (solubility of starting materials in the ionic liquid phase). Building on this insight, the ionic liquid catalyst and reaction conditions have been chosen. Conversion values of over 95% were achieved under exceptionally mild conditions, and using an inexpensive ionic liquid, which could be recycled up to eight times without diminution in conversion or selectivity. It has been demonstrated how structural studies can underpin rational design and development of an ionic liquid catalyst, and in turn lead to a both greener and economically viable process.

This paper describes the extraction of C5-C8 linear α-olefins from olefin/paraffin mixtures of the same carbon number using silver(I)/N,N-dimethylbenzamide bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N]) or silver(I)/propylamine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Ag(PrNH2)2][Tf2N]) as the extracting agent. The separation performance of the system increased with increasing chain length. [Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N] appeared to outperform [Ag(PrNH2)2][Tf2N] in terms of both selectivity and distribution coefficient. The [Ag(DMBA)2][Tf2N] system was successfully modeled using the universal quasi-chemical activity coefficient (UNIQUAC) model. These results support the potential future development of amine/amide-based ligands for producing soluble silver complexes useful for the separation of olefins from paraffins.

The peroxometalate-based polymer immobilized ionic liquid phase catalyst [PO4{WO(O-2)(2)}(4)]@PIILP has been prepared by anion exchange of ring opening metathesis-derived pyrrolidinium-decorated norbornene/ cyclooctene copolymer and shown to be a remarkably efficient system for the selective oxidation of sulfides under mild conditions. A cartridge packed with a mixture of [PO4{WO(O-2)(2)}(4)]@PIILP and silica operated as a segmented or continuous flow process and gave good conversions and high selectivity for either sulfoxide (92% in methanol at 96% conversion for a residence time of 4 min) or sulfone (96% in acetonitrile at 96% conversion for a residence time of 15 min). The immobilized catalyst remained active for 8 h under continuous flow operation with a stable activity/selectivity profile that allowed 6.5 g of reactant to be processed (TON = 46 428) while a single catalyst cartridge could be used for the consecutive oxidation of multiple substrates giving activity-selectivity profiles that matched those obtained with fresh catalyst.

In this work, 1-hexene was extracted from its mixtures with n-hexane in varying ratios using a task specific ionic liquid. Herein, the ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate, [BMIM][NO3], was used and examined with and without the addition of a metal salt. The impact of water on both selectivity and distribution coefficient was also tested. Four potential metal salts were investigated, the results of which demonstrate that the dissolution of transition-metal salts in the IL improves the separation of 1-hexene from n-hexane through metal-olefin complexation. Additionally, the presence of water in IL solutions containing metal salt enhances this selectivity. Finally, UNIFAC was used to correlate the experimental LLE data with good accuracy.

It has been found that the catalytic activity and selectivity of a metal film deposited on a solid electrolyte could be enhanced dramatically and in a reversible way by applying an electrical current or potential between the metal catalyst and the counter electrode (also deposited on the electrolyte). This phenomenon is know as NEMCA [S. Bebelis, C.G. Vayenas, Journal of Catalysis, 118 (1989) 125-146.] or electrochemical promotion (EP) [J. Prichard, Nature, 343 (1990) 592.] of catalysis. Yttria-doped barium zirconate, BaZr0.9Y0.1O3 - α (BZY), a known proton conductor, has been used in this study. It has been reported that proton conducting perovskites can, under the appropriate conditions, act also as oxide ion conductors. In mixed conducting systems the mechanism of conduction depends upon the gas atmosphere that to which the material is exposed. Therefore, the use of a mixed ionic (oxide ion and proton) conducting membrane as a support for a platinum catalyst may facilitate the tuning of the promotional behaviour of the catalyst by allowing the control of the conduction mechanism of the electrolyte. The conductivity of BZY under different atmospheres was measured and the presence of oxide ion conduction under the appropriate conditions was confirmed. Moreover, kinetic experiments on ethylene oxidation corroborated the findings from the conductivity measurements showing that the use of a mixed ionic conductor allows for the tuning of the reaction rate. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. In the catalytic hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexane, the separation of unreacted benzene from the product stream is inevitable and essential for an economically viable process. In order to evaluate the separation efficiency of ionic liquids (ILs) as a solvent in this extraction processes, the ternary (liquid + liquid) equilibrium of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [Cnmim][PF6] (n = 4, 5, 6), with benzene and cyclohexane was studied at T = 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The reliability of the experimentally determined tie-line data was confirmed by applying the Othmer–Tobias equation. The solute distribution coefficient and solvent selectivity for the systems studied were calculated and compared with literature data for other ILs and sulfolane. It turns out that the benzene distribution coefficient increases and solvent selectivity decreases as the length of the cation alkyl chain grows, and the ionic liquids [Cnmim][PF6] proved to be promising solvents for benzene–cyclohexane extractive separation. Finally, an NRTL model was applied to correlate and fit the experimental LLE data for the ternary systems studied.

Separation of benzene and cyclohexane is one of the most important and difficult processes in the petrochemical industry, especially for low benzene concentration. In this work, three ionic liquids (ILs), [Bmim][BF 4], [Bpy][BF 4], and [Bmim][SCN], were investigated as the solvent in the extraction of benzene from cyclohexane. The corresponding ternary liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) were experimentally determined at T = 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The LLE data were correlated with the nonrandom two-liquid model, and the parameters were fitted. The separation capabilities of the ILs were evaluated in terms of the benzene distribution coefficient and solvent selectivity. The effect of the IL structure on the separation was explained based on a well-founded physical model, COSMO-RS. Finally, the extraction processes were defined, and the operation parameters were analyzed. It shows that the ILs studied are suitable solvents for the extractive separation of benzene and cyclohexane, and their separation efficiency can be generally ranked as [Bmim][BF 4] > [Bpy][BF 4] > [Bmim][SCN]. The extraction process for a feed with 15 mol % benzene was optimized. High product purity (cyclohexane 0.997) and high recovery efficiency (cyclohexane 96.9% and benzene 98.1%) can be reached. © 2012 American Chemical Society.

Neutron diffraction has been used to investigate the structure of liquid mixtures of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate with benzene. Two concentrations of benzene were investigated, namely, 33 mol % and 67 mol %, and show similar structures in each case. The presence of benzene significantly alters the ionic liquid structure, in particular, in the cation-cation interactions, in agreement with the single-crystal structure described recently (Holbrey, J. D.; Reichert, W. M.; Nieuwenhuyzen, M.; Sheppard, O.; Hardacre, C.; Rogers, R. D. Chem. Commun. 2003, 476). In each case, the data was analyzed using an empirical potential structure refinement process.
