Absolute three-photon detachment cross sections are calculated for the fluorine negative ion within the lowest-order perturbation theory. The Dyson equation of the atomic many-body theory is used to obtain the ground-state 2p wavefunction with correct asymptotic behaviour, corresponding to the true (experimental) binding energy. We show that in accordance with the adiabatic theory this is crucial for obtaining absolute values of the multiphoton cross sections. Comparisons with other calculations and experimental data are presented.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra from molecules adsorbed on the surface of vertically aligned gold nanorod arrays exhibit a variation in enhancement factor (EF) as a function of excitation wavelength that displays little correlation with the elastic optical properties of the surface. The key to understanding this lack of correlation and to obtaining agreement between experimental and calculated EF spectra lies with consideration of randomly distributed, sub-10 nm gaps between nanorods forming the substrate. Intense fields in these enhancement “hot spots” make a dominant contribution to the Raman scattering and have a very different spectral profile to that of the elastic optical response. Detailed modeling of the electric field enhancement at both excitation and scattering wavelengths was used to quantitatively predict both the spectral profile and the magnitude of the observed EF.

Background. The success of transplantation is hampered by rejection of the graft by alloreactive T cells. Donor dendritic cells (DC) have been shown to be required for direct priming of immune responses to antigens from major histocompatibility complex-mismatched grafts. However, for immune responses to major histocompatibility complex-matched, minor histocompatibility (H) antigen mismatched grafts, the magnitude of the T-cell response to directly presented antigens is reduced, and the indirect pathway is more important. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the requirement for donor DC to directly present antigen from minor H antigen mismatched skin and hematopoietic grafts.

The majority of cemented femoral hip replacements fail as a consequence of loosening. One design feature that may affect loosening rates is implant surface finish. To determine whether or not surface finish effects fatigue damage accumulation in a bone cement mantle, we developed an experimental model of the implanted proximal femur that allows visualisation of damage growth in the cement layer. Five matt surface and five polished surface stems were tested. Pre-load damage and damage after two million cycles was measured. Levels of pre-load (shrinkage) damage were the same for both matt and polished stems; furthermore damage for matt vs. polished stems was not significantly different after two million cycles. This was due to the large variability in damage accumulation rates. Finite element analysis showed that the stress is higher for the polished (assumed debonded) stem, and therefore we must conclude that either the magnitude of the stress increase is not enough to appreciably increase the damage accumulation rate or, alternatively, the polished stem does not debond immediately from the cement. Significantly (P = 0.05) more damage was initiated in the lateral cement compared to the medial cement for both kinds of surface finish. It was concluded that, despite the higher cement stresses with debonded stems, polished prostheses do not provoke the damage accumulation failure scenario. (C) 2003 IPEM. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Crystallisation of the square-planar complex trans-Pt{PPh2(C16H15)}(2)Cl-2 from dichloromethane-diethyl ether (1:1) affords two different solvates; trans-Pt{PPh2(C16H15)}(2)Cl-2. CH2Cl2 1 and trans-Pt{PPh2(C16H15)}(2)Cl-2. Et2O 2; the CH2Cl2 forms H-bonding interactions with the complex whereas the Et2O participates only in weak van der Waals interactions; these differences arise from the different hydrogen-bonding characteristics of each solvent.

The solid-state structure of the [2.2]PHANEPHOS-transition-metal complex rac-[Pd(4,12-bis(diphenylphosphino)[2.2]paracyclophane)Cl-2] has been established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The P-Pd-P bite angle is ideally suited to catalytic processes such as carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions, which involve reductive elimination as the rate-determining step.

The generation of high harmonics created during the interaction of a 2.5 ps, 1053 nm laser pulse with a solid target has been recorded for intensities up to 10(19) W cm(-2). Harmonic orders up to the 68th at 15.5 nm in first order have been observed with indications up to the 75th at 14.0 nm in second-order diffraction. No differences in harmonic emission between s and p polarization of the laser beam were observed. The power of the 38th high harmonic at 27.7 nm is estimated to be 24 MW.

We present images of the source of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) harmonic emission at a wavelength of 220 Angstrom from the interaction of a 20 TW, 1.053 mu m Nd:glass laser beam focused to intensities up to 4x10(18) W cm(-2) onto a solid target. From these measurements we determine an upper limit to the source size and brightness of the harmonic emission to show its efficacy as a novel source of short-pulse, coherent XUV radiation. We also demonstrate the empirical scaling of the harmonic generation efficiency with irradiance up to 10(19) W mu m(2) cm(-2), and extrapolate to estimate the possible source brightness at higher irradiances. These source brightnesses are compared to those available from an x-ray laser system. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.
