'Just be Brave' - The Experiences of Young Witnesses in Criminal Proceedings in Northern Ireland

The last three decades have witnessed considerable interest in the position of children and young people acting as witnesses in criminal cases and on how best to facilitate them to give their best evidence and minimise the trauma involved. This paper presents the findings of a small-scale study in Northern Ireland examining the experiences of young witnesses pre-trial, during the trial and post-trial. Interviews were carried out with 37 young witnesses and 33 parents, and a questionnaire was completed by 16 volunteers and practitioners working in a local young witness support scheme. The findings indicate that the prospect and actuality of giving evidence in a criminal trial are anxiety-provoking and stressful for the majority of young witnesses. Particular issues identified are delay, both in terms of cases coming to court and in waiting times at court, the availability of pre-trial preparation and support, facilities at court buildings and the treatment of young people during cross-examination by defence lawyers. The paper concludes that there is a continuing need to strive for improvement, and that this necessarily involves reviewing the experiences of young witnesses and seeking their views on measures designed to enable them to give their best evidence. Activity Enhancement of Tetrahexahedral Pd Nanocrystals by Bi Decoration towards Ethanol Electrooxidation in Alkaline Media

Tetrahexahedral Pd nanocrystals (THH Pd NCs) were prepared on a glassy carbon electrode using a programmed square-wave potential electrodeposition method, and modified by Bi adatoms with a range of coverages via the cyclic voltammetry method. The reactivity of the catalysts prepared towards ethanol electrooxidation reaction (EOR) was studied in alkaline medium at various temperatures and under other conditions that practical fuel cells operate. Significant activity enhancements were observed for the Bi-modified THH Pd NCs with an optimum Bi coverage (θBi) of around 0.68 being obtained. Furthermore, it was found that increasing temperature from 25 ºC to 60 ºC enhances the reactivity significantly. The general kinetics data of EOR on Bi-decorated and bare THH Pd NCs have also been obtained, from the activation energy calculated based on Arrhenius plots, and compared. At the optimum Bi coverage, an enhancement in the activity of almost 3 times was achieved, and the corresponding activation energy was found to be reduced significantly.

Electromagnetic Focusing and Imaging in Stratified Media Using Gradient Phase Profiled Conjugating Lens

High-resolution imaging of a dipole source in stratified medium based on negative refraction is presented in this paper. Compensation of the material parameter contrast at the stratified media interface is achieved using a gradient phase profiled conjugating lens (GPCL). It is shown both analytically and numerically that the phase gradient applied across the GPCL positioned at the interface of vertically stratified media enables a high-quality image of a dipole source in a mirror symmetric position with respect to the lens plane. The analytical closed form expression of the phase gradient function is derived using Huygens-Kirchhoff principle. The result is applicable to media with arbitrary stratification and material parameters, including lossy materials. The mechanism for formation of the dipole image in the stratified medium and aberration due to the dielectric contrast at the interface, particularly electromagnetic loss, is discussed in detail. The efficacy of gradient phase and amplitude aberration compensations mechanisms available through the GPCL is articulated. The results of the study are of importance in a wide range of imaging problems in stratified media for medical, civil, and military applications.
