Successive treatment of 9-(phenylethynyl)fluoren-9-ol (1a), with HBr, butyllithium and chlorodiphenylphosphine furnishes 3,3-(biphenyl-2,2'-diyl)-1-diphenylphosphino-1-phenylallene (5). Moreover, reaction of 1a directly with chlorodiphenylphosphine yields the corresponding allenylphosphine oxide (6). The allenylphosphine (5), and Fe-2(CO)(9) initially form the phosphine-Fe(CO)(4) complex, 11, which is very thermally sensitive and readily loses a carbonyl ligand. In the resulting phosphine-Fe(CO)(3) system, 12, the additional site at iron is coordinated by the allene double bond adjacent to phosphorus; the Fe(CO) 3 tripod in 12 exhibits restricted rotation on the NMR time-scale even at room temperature. The corresponding chromium complex, (5)-Cr(CO)5 (9), has also been prepared. The gold complexes (5)AuCl (13), and [(5)-Au(THT)](+) X-, where (THT) is tetrahydrothiophene, and X = PF6 (14a), or ClO4 (14b), are analogous to the known triphenylphosphine-gold complexes. In contrast, in the (arene)(allenylphosphine) RuCl2 system the allene double bond adjacent to phosphorus displaces a chloride, and the resulting cationic species undergoes nucleophilic attack by water yielding ultimately a five-membered Ru-P-C=C-O ruthenacycle (17). Thus, the allenylphosphine (5), reacts initially as a conventional mono-phosphine but, when the metal centre has a readily displaceable ligand such as a carbonyl or halide, the allene double bond adjacent to the phosphorus can also function as a donor. X- ray crystal structures are reported for 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14a, 14b and 17.

Protonated betaine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide is an ionic liquid with the ability to dissolve large quantities of metal oxides. This metal-solubilizing power is selective. Soluble are oxides of the trivalent rare earths, uranium(VI) oxide, zinc(II) oxide, cadmium( II) oxide, mercury( II) oxide, nickel( II) oxide, copper(II) oxide, palladium(II) oxide, lead(II) oxide, manganese( II) oxide, and silver( I) oxide. Insoluble or very poorly soluble are iron(III), manganese(IV), and cobalt oxides, as well as aluminum oxide and silicon dioxide. The metals can be stripped from the ionic liquid by treatment of the ionic liquid with an acidic aqueous solution. After transfer of the metal ions to the aqueous phase, the ionic liquid can be recycled for reuse. Betainium bis( trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide forms one phase with water at high temperatures, whereas phase separation occurs below 55.5 degrees C ( temperature switch behavior). The mixtures of the ionic liquid with water also show a pH-dependent phase behavior: two phases occur at low pH, whereas one phase is present under neutral or alkaline conditions. The structures, the energetics, and the charge distribution of the betaine cation and the bis( trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide anion, as well as the cation-anion pairs, were studied by density functional theory calculations.

In this study, the feasibility of using H3PO4-activated lignin for hexavalent chromium adsorption has been investigated. The composite of activated lignin was characterized using FTIR, XRD and SEM with EDAX analysis. It was observed that the pH had a strong effect on the adsorption capacity; adsorption of Cr(VI) was more favorable at acidic pH with maximum uptake at pH 2. The adsorption equilibrium data were best represented by Koble-Corrigan isotherm. The monolayer sorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was found to be 77.85 mg/g. Adsorption showed pseudo-second order rate kinetics and the process involving the rate-controlling step is complex as it involves both film and intraparticle diffusion processes. The NaOH desorbing agent was able to release approximately 84% of metal ions. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the sorption process is exothermic and non-spontaneous. The overall Cr(VI) retention on the activated lignin surface perhaps includes both the physical adsorption of Cr(VI) and the consequent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Surface reaction methodology was implicated in the optimization of hexavalent chromium removal onto lignin with respect to the process parameters. The influence of altering the conditions for removal of chromium(VI), for instance; solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, the dose of biosorbent, presence of other metals (Zn and Cu), presence of salts and biosorption-desorption studies, were investigated. It was found that the biosorption capacity of lignin depends on solution pH, with a maximum biosorption capacity for chromium at pH 2. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to five different isotherm models by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption equilibrium data were well interpreted by the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum biosorption capacities (q(max)) obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich and Khan isotherms for Cr(VI) biosorption are 31.6 and 29.1 mg/g. respectively. Biosorption showed pseudo second order rate kinetics at different initial concentrations of Cr(VI). The intraparticle diffusion study indicated that film diffusion may be involved in the current study. The percentage removal of chromium on lignin decreased significantly in the presence of NaHCO3 and K2P2O7 salts. Desorption data revealed that nearly 70% of the Cr(VI) adsorbed on lignin could be desorbed using 0.1 M NaOH. It was evident that the biosorption mechanism involves the attraction of both hexavalent chromium (anionic) and trivalent chromium (cationic) onto the surface of lignin. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The review provides insight into the mechanism of ligand substitution and electron transfer (from chromium(III) to iron(III)) by comparison of the reactivity of some tetraazamacrocyclic chromium(III) complexes in the conjugate acid-base forms. Use of two geometrical isomers made possible to estimate the influence of geometry and protolytic reactions in trans and cis position towards the leaving group on the rate enhancement. Studies on the reaction rates in different media demonstrated the role played by outer sphere interactions in a monodentate ligand substitution. (C) 2009 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Oxidation of the macrocyclic Cr(III) complex cis-[Cr(cycb)(OH)(2)](+), where cycb = rac-5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, by an excess of the hexacyanoferrate( III) in basic solution, slowly produces Cr(V) species. These species, detected using e.p.r. spectroscopy, are stable under ambient conditions for many hours, and the hyperfine structure of the e.p.r. spectrum is consistent with the interaction of the d-electron with four equivalent nitrogen nuclei. Electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry suggests a concomitant oxidation of the macrocyclic ligand, in which double bonds and double bonded oxygen atoms have been introduced. By comparison basic chromate(III) solutions are oxidized rapidly to chromate(VI) by hexacyanoferrate(III) without any detectable generation of stable Cr(V) intermediates.

The basic principles of semiconductor photochemistry, particularly using titania as a semiconductor photocatalyst, are discussed. When a platinum group metal or its oxide is deposited onto the surface of a sensitised semiconductor the overall efficiency of the reactions it takes part in are often improved, especially when the deposits are used as hydrogen and oxygen catalysts, respectively. Methods of depositing metal or metal oxide are examined, and a particular focus is given to a photodeposition process that uses a sacrificial electron donor. Platinum group metal and platinum group metal oxide coated semiconductor photocatalysts are prominent in heterogeneous systems that are capable of the photoreduction, oxidation and cleavage of water. There is a recent renaissance in work on water-splitting semiconductor-sensitised photosystems, but there are continued concerns over their irreproducibility, longevity and photosynthetic nature.

The chromium bearing wastewater in this study was used to simulate the low concentration discharge from a major aerospace manufacturing facility in the UK. Removal of chromium ions from aqueous solutions using raw dolomite was achieved using batch adsorption experiments. The effect of; initial Cr(VI) concentration, amount of adsorbent, solution temperature, dolomite particle size and shaking speed was studied. Maximum chromium removal was found at pH 2.0. A kinetic study yielded an optimum equilibrium time of 96 h with an adsorbent dose of 1 g/L Sorption studies were conducted over a concentration range of 5-50 mg/L Cr(VI) removal decreased with an increase in temperature (q(max): 20 degrees C = 10.01 mg/g; 30 degrees C = 8.385 mg/g; 40 degrees C = 6.654 mg/g; and 60 degrees C = 5.669 mg/g). Results suggest that the equilibrium adsorption was described by the Freundlich model. The kinetic processes of Cr(VI) adsorption onto dolomite were described in order to provide a more clear interpretation of the adsorption rate and uptake mechanism. The overall kinetic data was acceptably explained by a pseudo first-order rate model. Evaluated Delta G degrees and Delta H degrees specify the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the reaction. The adsorption takes place with a decrease in entropy (Delta S degrees is negative). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The structural and coordination properties of complexes formed upon the interaction of copper(II) and chromium(II) chlorides with diallrylimidazolium chloride (RMlm(+)Cl(-)) ionic liquids and glucose are studied by a combination of density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). In the absence of the carbohydrate substrate, isolated mononuclear four-coordinated MeCl42- species (Me = Cu, Cr) dominate in the ionic liquid solution. The organic part of the ionic liquid does not directly interact with the metal centers. The interactions between the RMlm(+) cations and the anionic metal chloride complexes are limited to hydrogen bonding with the basic Cl- ligands and the overall electrostatic stabilization of the anionic metal complexes. Exchange of Cl ligands by a hydroxyl group of glucose is only favorable for CrCl42-. For Cu2+ complexes, the formation of hydrogen bonded complexes between CuCl42- and glucose is preferred. No preference for the coordination of metal chloride species to specific hydroxyl group of the carbohydrate is found. The formation of binuclear metal chloride complexes is also considered. The reactivity and selectivity patterns of the Lewis acid catalyzed reactions of glucose are discussed in the framework of the obtained results.
