PbZrO3/SrRuO3/SrTiO3 (100) epitaxial heterostructures with different thickness of the PbZrO3 (PZO) layer (d(PZO) similar to 5-160 nm) were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition. The ultrathin PZO films (d(PZO) <= 10 nm) were found to possess a rhombohedral structure. On increasing the PZO film thickness, a bulk like orthorhombic phase started forming in the film with d(PZO) similar to 22 nm and became abundant in the thicker films. Nanobeam electron diffraction and room-temperature micro-Raman measurements revealed that the stabilization of the rhombohedral phase of PZO could be attributed to the epitaxial strain accommodated by the heterostructures. Room-temperature polarization vs electric field measurements performed on different samples showed characteristic double hysteresis loops of antiferroelectric materials accompanied by a small remnant polarization for the thick PZO films (dPZO >= 50 nm). The remnant polarization increased by reducing the PZO layer thickness, and a ferroelectric like hysteresis loop was observed for the sample with d(PZO) similar to 22 nm. Local ferroelectric properties measured by piezoresponse force microscopy also exhibited a similar thickness-dependent antiferroelectric-ferroelectric transition. Room-temperature electrical properties observed in the PZO thin films in correlation to their structural characteristics suggested that a ferroelectric rhombohedral phase could be stabilized in thin epitaxial PZO films experiencing large interfacial compressive stress.

This paper discusses the importance of integrated sensing systems comprising techniques that give different types of data from a structure exposed to the marine environment so that its service life could reliably be predicted. For this purpose, a novel sensor combination was designed and installed in concrete panels which were exposed to Hangzhou Bay Bridge in China. The integrated sensor probe was used to monitor the cover concrete as well as the reinforcement. The sensor probes were connected to a monitoring station, which enabled access and control of the data remotely from Belfast, UK. The initial data obtained from the monitoring station gives interesting information on the early age properties of concrete and distinct variations in these properties with different types of concrete. This paper also reports the variation in electrical properties of different concrete samples and environmental data in response to the marine exposure condition at Hangzhou bay bridge.

class="articleBody_abstractText">This study describes the utilization of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) based on the mixture of the N-methylacetamide (MAc) with a lithium salt (LiX, with X = bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, TFSI; hexafluorophosphate, PF6; or nitrate, NO3) as electrolytes for carbon-based supercapacitors at 80 °C. The investigated DESs were formulated by mixing a LiX with the MAc (at xLi = 0.25). All DESs show the typical eutectic characteristic with eutectic points localized in the temperature range from −85 to −52 °C. Using thermal properties measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), solid–liquid equilibrium phase diagrams of investigated LiX–MAc mixtures were then depicted and also compared with those predicted by using the COSMOThermX software. However, the transport properties of selected DESs (such as the conductivity (σ) and the fluidity (η–1)) are not very interesting at ambient temperature, while by increasing the temperature up to 80 °C, these properties become more favorable for electrochemical applications, as shown by the calculated Walden products: w = ση–1 (mS cm–1 Pa–1 s–1) (7 < w < 16 at 25 °C and 513 < w < 649 at 80 °C). This “superionicity” behavior of selected DESs used as electrolytes explains their good cycling ability, which was determined herein by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostic charge–discharge methods, with high capacities up to 380 F g–1 at elevated voltage and temperature, i.e., ΔE = 2.8 V and 80 °C for the LiTFSI–MAc mixture at xLi = 0.25, for example. The electrochemical resistances ESR (equivalent series resistance) and EDR (equivalent diffusion resistance) evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements clearly demonstrate that according to the nature of anion, the mechanism of ions adsorption can be described by pure double-layer adsorption at the specific surface or by the insertion of desolvated ions into the ultramicropores of the activated carbon material. The insertion of lithium ions is observed by the presence of two reversible peaks in the CVs when the operating voltage exceeds 2 V. Finally, the efficiency and capacitance of symmetric AC/AC systems were then evaluated to show the imbalance carbon electrodes caused by important lithium insertion at the negative and by the saturation of the positive by anions, both mechanisms prevent in fact the system to be operational. Considering the promising properties, especially their cost, hazard, and risks of these DESs series, their introduction as safer electrolytes could represent an important challenge for the realization of environmentally friendly EDLCs operating at high temperature.

Melt-mixed high density polyethylene (HDPE)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites with 1–10 wt% MWCNTs were prepared by twin screw extrusion and compression moulded into sheet form. The compression moulded nanocomposites exhibit a 112% increase in modulus at a MWCNT loading of 4 wt%, and a low electrical percolation threshold of 1.9 wt%. Subsequently, uniaxial, sequential (seq-) biaxial and simultaneous (sim-) biaxial stretching of the virgin HDPE and nanocomposite sheets was conducted at different strain rates and stretching temperatures to investigate the processability of HDPE with the addition of nanotubes and the influence of deformation on the structure and final properties of nanocomposites. The results show that the processability of HDPE is improved under all the uniaxial and biaxial deformation conditions due to a strengthened strain hardening behaviour with the addition of MWCNTs. Extensional deformation is observed to disentangle nanotube agglomerates and the disentanglement degree is shown to depend on the stretching mode, strain rate and stretching temperatures applied. The disentanglement effectiveness is: uniaxial stretching < sim-biaxial stretching < seq-biaxial stretching, under the same deformation parameters. In sim-biaxial stretching, reducing the strain rate and stretching temperature can lead to more nanotube agglomerate breakup. Enhanced nanotube agglomerate disentanglement exhibits a positive effect on the mechanical properties and a negative effect on the electrical properties of the deformed nanocomposites. The ultimate stress of the composite containing 4 wt% MWCNTs increased by ∼492% after seq-biaxial stretching, while the resistivity increased by ∼1012 Ω cm.

A compact implantable printed meandered folded dipole antenna with a volume of 101.8 mm3 and robust performance is presented for operation in the 2.4 GHz medical ISM bands. The implant antenna is shown to maintain its return loss performance in the 2360???2400 MHz, 2400???2483.5 MHz and 2483.5???2500 MHz frequency bands, simulated in eleven different body tissue types with a broad range of electrical properties. Bandwidth and resonant frequency changes are reported for the same antenna implanted in high water content tissues such as muscle and skin as well as low water content tissues such as subcutaneous fat and bone. The antenna was also shown to maintain its return loss performance as it was moved towards a tissue boundary within a simulated phantom testbed.

Because of their extraordinary structural and electrical properties, two dimensional materials are currently being pursued for applications such as thin-film transistors and integrated circuit. One of the main challenges that still needs to be overcome for these applications is the fabrication of air-stable transistors with industry-compatible complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a novel high performance air-stable WSe2 CMOS technology with almost ideal voltage transfer characteristic, full logic swing and high noise margin with different supply voltages. More importantly, the inverter shows large voltage gain (~38) and small static power (Pico-Watts), paving the way for low power electronic system in 2D materials.
