Colourless single crystals of [Ag-3(Dat)(2)](NO3)(3) were obtained from a reaction of silver(l) nitrate and 3,5-dimethyl-4-amino-1,2,4-triazole (Dat). In the crystal structure (orthorhombic, Fdd2, Z = 8, a = 1100.1(2), b = 3500.3(2), c = 1015.4(3) pm, R, = 0.0434) there are two crystallographically non-equivalent silver sites in a one (Ag1) to two ratio (Ag2). Both resemble linear N-Ag-N coordination although angles are 163 degrees and 144 degrees, respectively Each Dat ligand coordinates with the two ring nitrogen atoms at 216 to 219 pm and with one amino-nitrogen atom at 229 pro. According to the composition [Ag-3(Dat)(2)](3+) = [(Dat)Ag-3/2](3+), a polymeric structure is built with all Ag+ ions bridging.

[Ag(NH3)(2)](ClO4) is obtained from a solution of AgClO4 in cone. ammonia as colourless single crystals (orthorhombic, Pnmn, Z = 4, a = 795.2(1) pm, b 617.7(1) pm, c = 1298.2(2) pm, R-all = 0.0494). The structure consists of linearly coordinated cations, [Ag(NH3)(2)](+), stacked in a staggered conformation and of tetrahedral (ClO4)(-) anions. A first order phase transition was observed between 210 and 200 K and the crystal structure of the low-temperature modification (monoclinic. P2/m, Z = 4, a = 789.9(5) pm, b = 604.1(5) pm, c = 1290.4(5) pm, beta = 97.436(5)degrees, at 170 K, R-all = 0.0636) has also been solved. Spectroscopic investigations (IR/Raman) have been carried out and the assignment of the spectra is discussed.

Quantification of nanoparticles in biological systems (i.e., cells, tissues and organs) is becoming a vital part of nanotoxicological and nanomedical fields. Dose is a key parameter when assessing behavior and any potential risk of nanomaterials. Various techniques for nanoparticle quantification in cells and tissues already exist but will need further development in order to make measurements reliable, reproducible and intercomparable between different techniques. Microscopy allows detection and location of nanoparticles in cells and has been used extensively in recent years to characterize nanoparticles and their pathways in living systems. Besides microscopical techniques (light microscopy and electron microscopy mainly), analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry, an established technique in trace element analysis, have been used in nanoparticle research. Other techniques require 'labeled particles, fluorescently, radioactively or magnetically. However, these techniques lack spatial resolution and subcellular localization is not possible. To date, only electron microscopy offers the resolving power to determine accumulation of nanoparticles in cells due to its ability to image particles individually. So-called super-resolution light microscopy techniques are emerging to provide sufficient resolution on the light microscopy level to image or 'see particles as individual particles. Nevertheless, all microscopy techniques require statistically sound sampling strategies in order to provide quantitative results. Stereology is a well-known sampling technique in various areas and, in combination with electron microscopy, proves highly successful with regard to quantification of nanoparticle uptake by cells. © 2010 Future Medicine Ltd.

We report the formation of highly scattering silver complexes of adenine, deoxyadenosine and 5'-dAMP under alkaline pH conditions in the colloidal silver solutions which are used for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. These complexes, and other pH-dependent phenomena, help to explain the diversity of previously reported adenine SERS spectra. Using conditions which promote complex formation allows nucleotides to be detected at <1 ppm, even in solutions with high salt concentrations.

We simulate the localized surface plasmon resonances of an Au nanoparticle within tunnelling proximity of an Au substrate. The results demonstrate that the calculated resonance energies can be identified with those experimentally detected for light emission from the tip-sample junction of a scanning tunnelling microscope. Relative to the modes of an isolated nanoparticle these modes show significant red-shifting, extending further into the infrared with increasing radius, primarily due to a proximity-induced lowering of the effective bulk plasmon frequency. Spatial mapping of the field enhancement factor shows an oscillatory variation of the field, absent in the case of a dielectric substrate; also the degree of localization of the modes, and thus the resolution achievable electromagnetically, is shown to depend primarily on the nanoparticle radius, which is only weakly dependent on wavelength.

Silver colloids have been prepared by reducing AgNO3 in aqueous solution and embeded in alumina following a sol-gel procedure in the presence of Pluronic 84 ((EO)(19)(PO)(39)(EO)(19)), as surfactant. Plasma-catalytic experiments aimed at the mineralization of toluene showed that the selectivity to CO2 was significantly increased in the presence of Ag catalysts compared with results obtained using the plasma alone. In-situ studies of the ozone interaction with catalysts provide an insight into the nature of the active sites of supported silver colloids for mineralization reactions. It is noticeable that when ozone is chemisorbed on embedded Ag colloidal catalysts no change in the silver oxidation state or size is found. The population of the chemisorbed species is higher at lower temperatures, where the non-selective decomposition of ozone is smaller. The catalysts exhibit high stability, preserving the structural and textural properties after the catalytic tests, that is indeed very important in the presence of ozone. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Ag/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts have been characterized in-depth during different thermo-chemical treatments by in situ diffuse reflectance UV-visible spectroscopy and quasi in situ Transmission Electron Microscopy. The combination of these techniques indicates that sintering and redispersion of silver is clearly observed from the increases and decreases in the absorption band intensity over the range of 250-600 nm due to the presence of silver clusters and silver nanoparticles. These results allow us to study the effect of the reaction feed on the metal dispersion at different operation conditions and discuss the formation of active sites during the selective catalytic reduction of O-2 with excess H-2 in the presence of unsaturated hydrocarbons. In this case high catalytic activity and selectivity toward the oxygen removal was achieved for this catalyst. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Surface-enhanced Raman (SERS) spectra of deoxyadenosine and 5'-dAMP on Ag and Au surfaces showed the protonation of both compounds in the N1 position, their orientation geometry on metal surfaces, and the formation of Ag+ complexes at alkaline pH on hydroxylamine-reduced Ag colloids. Interestingly, substitution at the N9 position caused dramatic changes in the relative band intensities within the spectra of both deoxyadenosine and 5'-dAMP compared to that of simple adenine, although they continued to be dominated by adenine vibrations. Concentration-dependent spectra of 5'-dAMP were observed, which matched that of adenine at high concentrations and that of deoxyadenosine at lower concentration (

Here we report an example of a mixed thiol monolayer on the surface of Ag nanoparticles which promotes adsorption and quantitative SERS detection of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, “Ecstasy”); the thiols in the mixed monolayers act synergistically since MDMA does not adsorb onto colloids modified with either of the thiols separately.

The SERS spectra of adenine recorded under a broad range of pH values and concentrations using both silver and gold colloids provided evidence for the existence of several distinct species. At high concentration (0.5-10 ppm), the spectra recorded between pH 1 and 11 showed only two distinct spectra, rather than the three forms that would be expected for a compound with two pK(a) values of 4.2 and 9.8. The spectra at neutral and alkaline pH were identical and assigned to the deprotonated form of adenine on the basis of DFT calculations, isotope shifts, and comparison with the normal Raman spectra of neutral and deprotonated adenine. The spectra at acidic pH were different, consistent with adenine protonation. Neutral adenine was not detected at any pH studied. At low adenine concentration (
