Energy levels and radiative rates for transitions among the lowest 60 fine-structure levels belonging to the (1s(2)) 2s(2)2p(5), 2s2p(6), and 2s(2)2p(4)3l configurations of F-like Mo XXXIV have been calculated using the fully relativistic GRASP code. Additionally, collision strengths for transitions among these levels have also been computed over a wide energy range below 3200 Ry. using the Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code. Resonances have been resolved in a fine energy mesh in order to calculate the effective collision strengths. Results for radiative rates, collision strengths, and excitation rates are presented for transitions from the lowest three levels to higher lying states. Comparisons with other available results are made, and the accuracy of the present data is assessed. Energy levels are expected to be accurate to within 1%, while other parameters are probably accurate to better than 20%.

Theoretical electron density sensitive emission line ratios involving a total of eleven 2s(2)2p(2)-2s2p(3) transitions in S XI between 187 and 292 Angstrom are presented. A comparison of these with solar active region observations obtained during rocket flights by the Solar EUV Rocket Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS) reveals generally good agreement between theory and experiment. However, the 186.87 Angstrom line is masked by fairly strong Fe XII emission at the same wavelength, while 239.83 Angstrom is blended with an unknown feature, and 285.58 Angstrom is blended with possibly N IV 285.56 Angstrom. In addition, the 191.23 Angstrom line appears to be more seriously blended with an Fe XIII feature than previously believed. The presence of several new S XI lines is confirmed in the SERTS spectra, at wavelengths of 188.66, 247.14 and 291.59 Angstrom, in excellent agreement with laboratory measurements. In particular, the detection of the 2s(2)2p(2) P- 3(1) -2s2p(3) P-3(0,1) transitions at 242.91 Angstrom is the first time (to our knowledge) that this feature has been identified in the solar spectrum. The potential usefulness of the S XI line ratios as electron density diagnostics for the solar transition region and corona is briefly discussed.

This paper reviews statistical models obtained from a composite factorial design study, which was carried out to determine the influence of three key parameters of mixture composition on filling ability and passing ability of self-consolidating concrete (SCC). This study was a part of the European project “Testing SCC”- GRD2-2000-30024. The parameters considered in this study were the dosages of water and high-range water-reducing admixture (HRWRA), and the volume of coarse aggregates. The responses of the derived statistical models were slump flow, T50 , T60, V-funnel flow time, Orimet flow time, and blocking ratio (L-box). The retention of these tests was also measured at 30 and 60 minutes after adding the first water. The models are valid for mixtures made with 188 to 208 L/m3 (317 to 350 lb/yd3) of water, 3.8 to 5.8 kg/m3 (570 to 970 mL/100 kg of binder) of HRWRA, and 220 to 360 L/m3 (5.97 to 9.76 ft3/yd3) of coarse aggregates. The utility of such models to optimize concrete mixtures and to achieve a good balance between filling ability and passing ability is discussed. Examples highlighting the usefulness of the models are presented using isoresponse surfaces to demonstrate single and coupled effects of mixture parameters on slump flow, T50 , T60 , V-funnel flow time, Orimet flow time, and blocking ratio. The paper also illustrates the various trade-offs between the mixture parameters on the derived responses that affected the filling and the passing ability.

This paper reports the initial response of atomic nitrogen doped diamond like carbon (DLC) to endothelial cells in vitro. The introduction of nitrogen atoms/molecules to the diamond like carbon structures leads to an atomic structural change favorable to the attachment of human micro-vascular enclothelial cells. Whilst the semi-conductivity induced by nitrogen in DLC is thought to play a part, the increase in the inion-bonded N atoms and N-2 molecules in the atomic doped species (with the exclusion of the charged species) seems to contribute to the improved attachment of human microvascular endothelial cells. The increased endothelial attachment is associated with a lower work function and slightly higher water contact angle in the atomic doped films, where the heavy charged particles are excluded. The films used in the study were synthesized by the RF PECVD technique followed by post deposition doping with nitrogen, and afterwards the films were characterized by XPS, Raman spectroscopy, SIMS and Kelvin probe. The water contact angles were measured, and the counts of the adherent endothelial cells on the samples were carried out. This study is relevant and contributory to improving biocompatibility of surgical implants and prostheses.

The limited availability of experimental data and their quality have been preventing the development of predictive methods and Computer Aided Molecular Design (CAMD) of ionic liquids (ILs). Based on experimental speed of sound data collected from the literature, the inter-relationship of surface tension (s), density (?), and speed of sound (u) has been examined for imidazolium based ILs containing hexafluorophosphate (PF6), tetrafluoroborate (BF4), bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl) amide (NTf2), methyl sulphate (MeSO4), ethyl sulphate (EtSO4), and trifluoromethanesulphonate (CF3SO3) anions, covering wide ranges of temperature, 278.15–343.15 K and speed of sound, 1129.0–1851.0 m s-1. The speed of sound was correlated with a modified Auerbach's relation, by using surface tension and density data obtained from volume based predictive methods previously proposed by the authors. It is shown that a good agreement with literature data is obtained. For 133 data points of 14 ILs studied a mean percent deviation (MPD) of 1.96% with a maximum deviation inferior to 5% was observed. The correlations developed here can thus be used to evaluate the speeds of sound of new ionic liquids.

Aminobacter lissarensis CC495 is an aerobic facultative methylotroph capable of growth on glucose, glycerol, pyruvate and methylamine as well as the methyl halides methyl chloride and methyl bromide. Previously, cells grown on methyl chloride have been shown to express two polypeptides with apparent molecular masses of 67 and 29 kDa. The 67 kDa protein was purified and identified as a halomethane:bisulfide/halide ion methyltransferase. This study describes a single gene cluster in A. lissarensis CC495 containing the methyl halide utilisation genes cmuB, cmuA, cmuC, orf 188, paaE and hutI The genes correspond to the same order and have a high similarity to a gene cluster found in Aminobacter ciceronei IMB-1 and Hyphomicrobium chloromethanicum strain CM2 indicating that genes encoding methyl halide degradation are highly conserved in these strains. We construct a countable-dimensional Hausdorff locally convex topological vector space $E$ and a stratifiable closed linear subspace $F$ subset of $E$ such that any linear extension operator from $C_b(F)$ to $C_b(E)$ is unbounded (here $C_b(X)$ stands for the Banach space of continuous bounded real-valued functions on $X$).

There is evidence that patients with schizophrenia have impaired explicit memory and intact implicit memory. The present study sought to replicate and extend that of O'Carroll et al. [O'Carroll, R.E., Russell, H.H., Lawrie, S.M. and Johnstone, E.C., 1999. Errorless learning and the cognitive rehabilitation of memory-impaired schizophrenic patients. Psychological Medicine 29, 105-112.] which reported that for memory-impaired patients with schizophrenia performance on a (cued) word recall task is enhanced using errorless learning techniques (in which errors are prevented during learning) compared to errorful learning (the traditional trial-and-error approach). Thirty patients with a DSM-IV diagnosis of schizophrenia and fifteen healthy controls (HC) participated. The Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test was administered and from their scores, the schizophrenic patients were classified as either memory-impaired (MIS), or memory-unimpaired (MUS). During the training phase two lists of words were learned separately, one using the errorless learning approach and the other using an errorful approach. Subjects were then tested for their recall of the words using cued recall. After errorful learning training, performance on word recall for the MIS group was impaired compared to the MUS and HC groups. However, after errorless learning training, no significant differences in performance were found between the three groups. Errorless learning may play an important role in remediation of cognitive deficits for patients with schizophrenia. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
