In a previous paper we have published observational data for 6 early B-type stars having, galactocentric distances of between 10 and 18 kpc. Using LTE line-blanketed model at mosphere techniques we derived their atmospheric parameters, finding that all our targets had similar effective temperatures and surface gravities. In the following study we additionally include two stars which have been presented previously (Rolleston et al. 1993) and found also to have compatible atmospheric parameters to the original programme stars. The homogeneity of this sample allows quantitative line-by-line differential abundance analyses to be carried out which should reliably detect variations in the chemical compositions of the stellar photospheres. We present differential abundances for eight stars, in either young open clusters or the field, with respect to an arbitrarily chosen standard which shows a normal abundance pattern. Our method of calculating distances from the derived atmospheric parameters means that the relative distance scale should be accurate.

High resolution spectra of six early B-type main-sequence stars having galactocentric distances of between 10 and 18 kpc are presented. We List the equivalent widths for the metal lines and illustrate their hydrogen and helium line profiles. The stars are analysed using LTE line-blanketed model atmosphere techniques to derive atmospheric parameters and surface chemical compositions. All six stars have similar effective temperatures and surface gravities, allowing a reliable comparison of their metal abundances and distances. Significant variations in the photospheric abundances are evident and are discuss the need for a more detailed line-by-line differential analysis to exactly quantify the differences. This will be presented in a companion paper (Smartt et al. 1996).

Short pulses of 100 ps FWHM duration at 1.06 mu m wavelength are used as the pump source for driving the J = 0-1, 19.6 nm, Ne-like germanium X-ray laser. Different combinations of short pulses are investigated and quantitatively compared. Configurations investigated include a single pulse, double pulses at 400 ps and 800 ps separation, single pulses with prepulses and double pulses with prepulses. Data are presented in the form of integrated energy measurements, and supported by modelling. The most efficient short pulse configurations are shown to be orders of magnitude more effective than pumping with nanosecond duration pulses. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The time-integrated spatial coherence of neonlike germanium x-ray laser radiation has been studied with a new dispersing coherence diagnostic. Angle-dependent spatial coherence data are recorded by sampling the diverging beam at each lasing wavelength in several directions simultaneously. Measurements of the spatial coherence, and hence effective source sizes, relevant to the output beams from double-slab targets for the J = 2-1 spectral lines at wavelengths 28.6, 23.6, and 23.2 nm and for the J = 0-1 line at 19.6 nm show differences, which indicate different conditions in the plasma volume amplifying these emissions. Targets are pumped by subnanosecond pulse drivers, with and without a prepulse, but 19.6 nm emission is detected only in the prepulsed case. The differences are discussed in terms of the time evolution of the spectral lines. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.

We have observed extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) ''line-free'' continuum emission from laser plasmas of high atomic number elements using targets irradiated with 248 nm laser pulses of 7 ps duration at a power density of similar to 10(13) W/cm(2). Using both dispersive spectroscopy and streak camera detection, the spectral and temporal evolution of XUV continuum emission for several target atomic numbers has been measured on a time scale with an upper limit of several hundred picoseconds limited by amplified spontaneous emission. The photo-pump strengths of both the ((3 (d) over bar(4))(0)(3d(6))(0))(0)-(((3 (d) over bar(3))(3/2)(3d(6))(0))(3/2)(5 (f) over bar)(5/2))(1) and the ((3 (d) over bar(4))(0)(3d(6))0)0-(((3 (d) over bar(4))(0)(3d(5))(5/2))(5/2)(5f)(7/2))(1) transitions in Ni-like Sm34+ have been measured to be 2.0 x 10(-4) and 2.4 x 10(-4) photons/mode respectively. The implications of the measurement are briefly discussed in a comparison of the merits of automatically line matched photo-pump scheme to those of the collisional excitation Ni-like Sm+34 scheme.

Coherent wake emission is a unique source of extreme ultraviolet radiation and has been recently shown to provide the basis for intense attosecond light. Here we present a novel scheme, supported by particle-in-cell simulations, demonstrating that enhancement and spectral control of the coherent wake emission signal can be achieved by modifying the interaction plasma density ramp. Significant tunable enhancement of harmonic emission is verified experimentally, with factors of > 50 in relative signal increase achieved in a narrow band of harmonics at the cutoff frequency.

Experiments were performed in which intense laser pulses (up to 9x10(19) W/cm(2)) were used to irradiate very thin (submicron) mass-limited aluminum foil targets. Such interactions generated high-order harmonic radiation (greater than the 25th order) which was detected at the rear of the target and which was significantly broadened, modulated, and depolarized because of passage through the dense relativistic plasma. The spectral modifications are shown to be due to the laser absorption into hot electrons and the subsequent sharply increasing relativistic electron component within the dense plasma.

The fast ignitor scheme for inertial confinement fusion requires forward driving of the critical density surface by light pressure (hole boring) to allow energy deposition close to the dense fuel. The recession velocity of the critical density surface has been observed to be nu/c = 0.015 at an irradiance of 1.0 x 10(19) W cm(-2) at a wavelength of 1.05 micron, in quantitative agreement with modeling. The level of second-harmonic light emitted from a laser-exploded foil plasma at nominal irradiance up to 3.10(13) W/cm2 was found to be extremely sensitive to both target position and irradiance on target. Either a small target displacement or a small increase in irradiance resulted in a jump of the 2omega level of more than three orders of magnitude. Correspondingly, a transition was observed from a 2omega source pattern clearly signed by the original laser spot pattern to unstable patterns of filaments whose size is consistent with the maximum growth of the instability.

Simple pictures under everyday viewing conditions evoke impressions of surfaces oriented in depth. These impressions have been studied by measuring the slants of perceived surfaces, with probes (rotating arrowheads) designed to respect the distinctive character of depicted scenes. Converging arguments indicated that the perceived orientation of the probes was near theoretical values. A series of experiments showed that subjects formed well-defined impressions of depicted surface orientation. The literature suggests that perceived objects might be flattened', but that was not the general rule. Instead, both mean slant and uncertainty fitted models in which slant estimates are derived in a relatively straightforward way from local relations in the picture. Simplifying pictures tended to make orientation estimates less certain, particularly away from the natural anchor points (vertical and horizontal). The shape of the object affected all aspects of the observed-object/percept relationship. Individual differences were large, and suggest that different individuals used different relationships as a basis for their estimates. Overall, data suggest that everyday picture perception is strongly selective and weakly integrative. In particular, depicted slant is estimated by finding a picture feature which will be strongly related to it if the object contains a particular regularity, not by additive integration of evidence from multiple directly and indirectly relevant sources.

Optical emission spectra from a low-pressure Ar plasma were studied with high spatial resolution. It has been shown that the intensity ratios of Ar lines excited through metastable levels to those excited directly from the ground state are sensitive to the shape of electron energy distribution function. From these measurements, important information on the spatial variation of plasma parameters can be obtained. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(99)01629-0].

Temporally resolved electron density measurements of solar flare plasmas are presented using data from the EUV Variability Experiment (EVE) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. The EVE spectral range contains emission lines formed between 104 and 107 K, including transitions from highly ionized iron (gsim10 MK). Using three density-sensitive Fe XXI ratios, peak electron densities of 1011.2-1012.1 cm–3 were found during four X-class flares. While previous measurements of densities at such high temperatures were made at only one point during a flaring event, EVE now allows the temporal evolution of these high-temperature densities to be determined at 10 s cadence. A comparison with GOES data revealed that the peak of the density time profiles for each line ratio correlated well with that of the emission measure time profile for each of the events studied.

This paper proposes max separation clustering (MSC), a new non-hierarchical clustering method used for feature extraction from optical emission spectroscopy (OES) data for plasma etch process control applications. OES data is high dimensional and inherently highly redundant with the result that it is difficult if not impossible to recognize useful features and key variables by direct visualization. MSC is developed for clustering variables with distinctive patterns and providing effective pattern representation by a small number of representative variables. The relationship between signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and clustering performance is highlighted, leading to a requirement that low SNR signals be removed before applying MSC. Experimental results on industrial OES data show that MSC with low SNR signal removal produces effective summarization of the dominant patterns in the data.
