In most previous research on distributional semantics, Vector Space Models (VSMs) of words are built either from topical information (e.g., documents in which a word is present), or from syntactic/semantic types of words (e.g., dependency parse links of a word in sentences), but not both. In this paper, we explore the utility of combining these two representations to build VSM for the task of semantic composition of adjective-noun phrases. Through extensive experiments on benchmark datasets, we find that even though a type-based VSM is effective for semantic composition, it is often outperformed by a VSM built using a combination of topic- and type-based statistics. We also introduce a new evaluation task wherein we predict the composed vector representation of a phrase from the brain activity of a human subject reading that phrase. We exploit a large syntactically parsed corpus of 16 billion tokens to build our VSMs, with vectors for both phrases and words, and make them publicly available.

Queer politics and spaces have historically been associated with ideals of sexual liberation. They are conceptualised as spaces where sex, and its intersections with intimacy, friendship and love can be explored outside of normative frameworks which value monogamous reproductive heterosexuality at the expense of other non-normative sexual expressions. In recent years, however, autonomous queer spaces such as the global Queeruption gatherings and other queer community spaces in Australia have become increasingly concerned with the presence and danger of sexual violence in queer communities. Almost without exception, this danger has been responded to through the creation of ‘safe(r) spaces’ policies, generally consisting of a set of guidelines and proscribed behaviours which individuals must agree to in order to participate in or attend the event or space. The guidelines themselves tend to privilege of sexual politics of affirmative verbal consent, insisting that such consent should be sought prior to any physical or sexual contact, inferring that a failure to do so is ethically unacceptable within. This chapter reflects on the attempts to construct queer communities as ‘safer spaces,’ arguing that the concepts of consent and safety are inadequate to develop a queer response to sexual violence. Such a response, it argues, must be based on the openness to possibilities and refusal of sexual restrictions and regulations that have always been central elements of queer theory and politics.

In order to formalize and extend on previous ad-hoc analysis and synthesis methods a theoretical treatment using vector representations of directional modulation (DM) systems is introduced and used to achieve DM transmitter characteristics. An orthogonal vector approach is proposed which allows the artificial orthogonal noise concept derived from information theory to be brought to bear on DM analysis and synthesis. The orthogonal vector method is validated and discussed via bit error rate (BER) simulations.

Directional Modulation (DM) is a recently proposed technique for securing wireless communication. In this paper we point out that modulation-directionality is a consequence of varying the beamforming network, either in baseband or in the RF stage, at the information rate In order to formalize and extend on previous analysis and synthesis methods a new theoretical treatment using vector representations of directional modulation (DM) systems is introduced and used to obtain the necessary and sufficient con

Large range ordered La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO(3) and SrRuO(3) epitaxial dots were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition using stencil masks and were embedded in ferroelectric PbTiO(3) epitaxial films. PbTiO(3) films grown on top of La(0.7)Sr(0.3)MnO(3) dots form arrays of 180 degrees domains that are switchable and have good ferroelectric properties. PbTiO(3) films made on top of SrRuO(3) dots have a monodomain polarization state. These observations point out the importance of the electronic properties of the bottom electrode in the selection of a preferential polarization state in epitaxial ferroelectric films and propose a route of fabricating large arrays of switchable 180 degrees ferroelectric domains. This paper introduces hybrid address spaces as a fundamental design methodology for implementing scalable runtime systems on many-core architectures without hardware support for cache coherence. We use hybrid address spaces for an implementation of MapReduce, a programming model for large-scale data processing, and the implementation of a remote memory access (RMA) model. Both implementations are available on the Intel SCC and are portable to similar architectures. We present the design and implementation of HyMR, a MapReduce runtime system whereby different stages and the synchronization operations between them alternate between a distributed memory address space and a shared memory address space, to improve performance and scalability. We compare HyMR to a reference implementation and we find that HyMR improves performance by a factor of 1.71× over a set of representative MapReduce benchmarks. We also compare HyMR with Phoenix++, a state-of-art implementation for systems with hardware-managed cache coherence in terms of scalability and sustained to peak data processing bandwidth, where HyMR demon- strates improvements of a factor of 3.1× and 3.2× respectively. We further evaluate our hybrid remote memory access (HyRMA) programming model and assess its performance to be superior of that of message passing.

This study describes an innovative monolith structure designed for applications in automotive catalysis using an advanced manufacturing approach developed at Imperial College London. The production process combines extrusion with phase inversion of a ceramic-polymer-solvent mixture in order to design highly ordered substrate micro-structures that offer improvements in performance, including reduced PGM loading, reduced catalyst ageing and reduced backpressure.
This study compares the performance of the novel substrate for CO oxidation against commercially available 400 cpsi and 900 cpsi catalysts using gas concentrations and a flow rate equivalent to those experienced by a full catalyst brick when attached to a vehicle. Due to the novel micro-structure, no washcoat was required for the initial testing and 13 g/ft3 of Pd was deposited directly throughout the substrate structure in the absence of a washcoat.
Initial results for CO oxidation indicate that the advanced micro-structure leads to enhanced conversion efficiency. Despite an 79% reduction in metal loading and the absence of a washcoat, the novel substrate sample performs well, with a light-off temperature (LOT) only 15 °C higher than the commercial 400 cpsi sample.
To test the effects of catalyst ageing on light-off temperature, each sample was aged statically at a temperature of 1000 °C, based on the Bench Ageing Time (BAT) equation. The novel substrate performed impressively when compared to the commercial samples, with a variation in light-off temperature of only 3% after 80 equivalent hours of ageing, compared to 12% and 25% for the 400 cpsi and 900 cpsi monoliths, respectively.

We present an algebro-geometric approach to a theorem on finite domination of chain complexes over a Laurent polynomial ring. The approach uses extension of chain complexes to sheaves on the projective line, which is governed by a K-theoretical obstruction.
