Controlling coherent electromagnetic interactions in molecular systems is a problem of both fundamental interest and important applicative potential in the development of photonic and opto-electronic devices. The strength of these interactions determines both the absorption and emission properties of molecules coupled to nanostructures, effectively governing the optical properties of such a composite metamaterial. Here we report on the observation of strong coupling between a plasmon supported by an assembly of oriented gold nanorods (ANR) and a molecular exciton. We show that the coupling is easily engineered and is deterministic as both spatial and spectral overlap between the plasmonic structure and molecular aggregates are controlled. We think that these results in conjunction with the flexible geometry of the ANR are of potential significance to the development of plasmonic molecular devices.

A flexible, mass-conservative numerical technique for solving the advection-dispersion equation for miscible contaminant transport is presented. The method combines features of puff transport models from air pollution studies with features from the random walk particle method used in water resources studies, providing a deterministic time-marching algorithm which is independent of the grid Peclet number and scales from one to higher dimensions simply. The concentration field is discretised into a number of particles, each of which is treated as a point release which advects and disperses over the time interval. The dispersed puff is itself discretised into a spatial distribution of particles whose masses can be pre-calculated. Concentration within the simulation domain is then calculated from the mass distribution as an average over some small volume. Comparison with analytical solutions for a one-dimensional fixed-duration concentration pulse and for two-dimensional transport in an axisymmetric flow field indicate that the algorithm performs well. For a given level of accuracy the new method has lower computation times than the random walk particle method.

Rodent brain-adapted measles virus (MV) strains, such as CAM/RB and recombinant MVs based on the Edmonston strain containing the haemagglutinin (H) of CAM/RB, cause acute encephalitis after intracerebral infection of newborn rodents. We have demonstrated that rodent neurovirulence is modulated by two mutations at amino acid positions 195 and 200 in the H protein, one of these positions (200) being a potential glycosylation site. In order to analyse the effects of specific amino acids at these positions, we introduced a range of individual and combined mutations into the open reading frame of the H gene to generate a number of eukaryotic expression plasmids. The functionality of the mutant H proteins was assessed in transfected cells and by generating recombinant viruses. Interestingly, viruses caused acute encephalitis only if the amino acid Ser at position 200 was coupled with Gly at position 195, whereas viruses with single or combined mutations at these positions, including glycosylation at position 200, were attenuated. Neurovirulence was associated with virus spread and induction of neuronal apoptosis, whereas attenuated viruses failed to infect brain cells. Similar results were obtained by using primary brain-cell cultures. Our findings indicate that a structural alteration in the stem 2 region of the H protein at position 195 or 200 interferes with infectivity of rodent neurons, and suggest that the interaction of the viral attachment protein with cellular receptors on neurons is affected.

Changes of the electron dynamics during the mode transition (E- to H-mode) in a hydrogen radio-frequency (rf) inductively coupled plasma are investigated using space and phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy. The E- mode is characterized through relatively weak optical emission which is strongly modulated on a nanosecond time scale during the rf-cycle, with one pronounced maximum per cycle. The modulation in H-mode, with twice the rf-frequency, is significantly weaker while the emission intensities are about two orders of magnitude higher. In particular the transition between these two modes is studied under variations of rf-power input and gas pressure. Characteristic spatio-temporal structures are observed and can be understood in the frame of a simple model combining both coupling mechanisms in the transition regime.

We have previously characterized IGSF6 (DORA), a novel member of the immunoglobulin superfamily (IGSF) from human and rat expressed in dendritic and myeloid cells. Using a probe from the open reading frame of the rat cDNA, we isolated a cosmid which contains the entire mouse gene. By comparative analysis and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, we defined the intron/exon structure and the mRNA of the mouse gene and, with respect to human BAC clones, the human gene. The genes span 10 kb (mouse) and 12 kb (human), with six exons arranged in a manner similar to other members of the IGSF. All intron/exon boundaries follow the GT-AG rule. Expression of the mouse Igsf6 gene is restricted to cells of the immune system, particularly macrophages. Northern blot revealed a single mRNA of 2.5 kb, in contrast to the human gene which is expressed as two mRNAs of 1 and 2.5 kb. The human and mouse genes were localized to a locus associated with inflammatory bowel disease. Analysis of the flanking regions of the Igsf6 gene revealed the presence of an unrelated gene, transcribed from the opposite strand of the DNA and oriented such that the Igsf6 gene is encoded entirely within an intron. An identical organization is seen in human. This gene of unknown function is transcribed and processed, contains homologues in Caenorhabditis elegans and prokaryotes, and is expressed in most organs in the mouse.

Nine bradykinin-related peptides were identified in Phyllomedusa sauvagei skin secretion using QTOF MS/MS fragmentation sequencing. The major peptides were (Thr6)-bradykinin, (Hyp3, Thr6)-bradykinin, (Thr6)-phyllokinin and (Hyp3, Thr6)-phyllokinin. The phyllokinins occurred in both sulfated and non-sulfated forms. All (Thr6)-substituted bradykinins/phyllokinins could be generated from a common precursor by differential post-translational processing and modification. The open-reading frame of the cloned precursor cDNA consisted of 62 amino acid residues with a single bradykinin/phyllokinin coding sequence located at the C-terminus. Structural features included a Glu-Arg processing site at the N-terminus of the bradykinin/phyllokinin domain and the absence of an acidic amino acid residue adjacent to the C-terminal Tyr residue in the phyllokinins. However, the neutral amino acid residue (Ile) at position -1 and the basic amino acid residue (Arg) at position -2 from the Tyr residue, constitute a sulfation motif previously identified only in a protochordean.

The development of wideband network services and the new network infrastructures to support them have placed much more requirements on current network management systems. Issues such as scalability, integrity and interoperability have become more important. Existing management systems are not flexible enough to support the provision of Quality of Service (QoS) in these dynamic environments. The concept of Programmable Networks has been proposed to address these requirements. Within this framework, CORBA is regarded as a middleware technology that can enable interoperation among the distributed entities founds in Programmable Networks. By using the basic CORBA environment in a heterogeneous network environment, a network manager is able to control remote Network Elements (NEs) in the same way it controls its local resources. Using this approach both the flexibility and intelligence of the overall network management can be improved. This paper proposes the use of two advanced features of CORBA to enhance the QoS management in a Programmable Network environment. The Transaction Service can be used to manage a set of tasks, whenever the management of elements in a network is correlated; and the Concurrency Service can be used to coordinate multiple accesses on the same network resources. It is also shown in this paper that proper use of CORBA can largely reduce the development and administration of network management applications.

Modelling and control of nonlinear dynamical systems is a challenging problem since the dynamics of such systems change over their parameter space. Conventional methodologies for designing nonlinear control laws, such as gain scheduling, are effective because the designer partitions the overall complex control into a number of simpler sub-tasks. This paper describes a new genetic algorithm based method for the design of a modular neural network (MNN) control architecture that learns such partitions of an overall complex control task. Here a chromosome represents both the structure and parameters of an individual neural network in the MNN controller and a hierarchical fuzzy approach is used to select the chromosomes required to accomplish a given control task. This new strategy is applied to the end-point tracking of a single-link flexible manipulator modelled from experimental data. Results show that the MNN controller is simple to design and produces superior performance compared to a single neural network (SNN) controller which is theoretically capable of achieving the desired trajectory. Aims. In this paper we report calculations for energy levels, radiative rates, and excitation rates for transitions in O IV. Methods. The grasp (general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package) and FAC (flexible atomic code) were adopted for calculating energy levels and radiative rates, and the Dirac atomic R-matrix code (DARC) used to determine the excitation rates. Results. Oscillator strengths and radiative rates are reported for all E1, E2, M1, and M2 transitions among the lowest 75 levels of O IV. Additionally, lifetimes are reported for all levels and comparisons made with those available in the literature. Finally, effective collision strengths are reported for all transitions over a wide temperature range below 106 K. Comparisons are made with earlier results and the accuracy of the data is assessed.

The management of invasive non-native species is a frequent cause of conflict in the field of biodiversity conservation because perceptions of their costs and benefits differ among stakeholder groups. A lack of cohesion between scientific researchers, the commercial sector and policy makers lies at the root of a widespread failure to develop and implement sustainable management practices for invasive species. The crisis of this situation is intensified by drivers stemming from international conventions and directives to address invasive species issues. There are further direct conflicts between legislative instruments promoting biodiversity conservation on the one hand while liberalizing trade at the national, European and global level on the other. The island of Ireland provides graphic illustration of the importance of cross-jurisdictional approaches to biological invasions. Using primarily Irish examples in this review, we emphasize the importance of approaching risk assessment, risk reduction and control or eradication policies from a cost-efficient, highly flexible perspective, incorporating linkages between environmental, economic and social objectives. The need for consolidated policies between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is particularly acute, though few model cross-border mechanisms for such consolidation are available. The importance of engaging affected stakeholders through positive interactions is discussed with regard to reducing the currently fragmented nature of invasive species management between the two jurisdictions.

Asymmetric Diels-Alder reactions using platinum complexes of BINAP, or of conformationally flexible NUPHOS-type diphosphines, have been compared in dichloromethane and selected ionic liquids. Significant enhancements in the enantioselectivity (Deltaee approximate to 20%), as well as reaction rate, were achieved in ionic liquids compared with the organic media.

A series of dinuclear (bipyridine)tricarbonylrhenium(I) and tris(bipyridine)ruthenium(II) complexes have been isolated and characterised, bridged by a flexible diamido ethylene glycol chain. A new stepwise synthetic pathway has been investigated to heterometallic complexes, with the rhenium(I) complexes exhibiting an unusual configuration and inequivalence of the metal centres potentially arising from a surprising hydrogen-bonding interaction between an Re–CO group and an amide proton in low-polarity solvents. This interaction appears to be broken by competing hydrogen-bonding species such as dihydrogen phosphate. This effect was not observed in the corresponding ruthenium(II) complexes, which showed very little interaction with anions. The photophysical characterisation shows that the inclusion of two ester/amide groups to the rhenium centre effectively quenches the fluorescence at room temperature. The ruthenium(II) complexes have considerably stronger fluorescence than the rhenium species, and are less affected by theinclusion of ester and amide groups to the 2,2'-bipyridine chelating group.

Chitosan nanoparticles fabricated via different preparation protocols have been in recent years widely studied as carriers for therapeutic proteins and genes with varying degree of effectiveness and drawbacks. This work seeks to further explore the polyionic coacervation fabrication process, and associated processing conditions under which protein encapsulation and subsequent release can be systematically and predictably manipulated so as to obtain desired effectiveness. BSA was used as a model protein which was encapsulated by either incorporation or incubation method, using the polyanion tripolyphosphate (TPP) as the coacervation crosslink agent to form chitosan-BSA-TPP nanoparticles. The BSA-loaded chitosan-TPP nanoparticles were characterized for particle size, morphology, zeta potential, BSA encapsulation efficiency, and subsequent release kinetics, which were found predominantly dependent on the factors of chitosan molecular weight, chitosan concentration, BSA loading concentration, and chitosan/TPP mass ratio. The BSA loaded nanoparticles prepared under varying conditions were in the size range of 200-580 nm, and exhibit a high positive zeta potential. Detailed sequential time frame TEM imaging of morphological change of the BSA loaded particles showed a swelling and particle degradation process. Initial burst released due to surface protein desorption and diffusion from sublayers did not relate directly to change of particle size and shape, which was eminently apparent only after 6 h. It is also notable that later stage particle degradation and disintegration did not yield a substantial follow-on release, as the remaining protein molecules, with adaptable 3-D conformation, could be tightly bound and entangled with the cationic chitosan chains. In general, this study demonstrated that the polyionic coacervation process for fabricating protein loaded chitosan nanoparticles offers simple preparation conditions and a clear processing window for manipulation of physiochemical properties of the nanoparticles (e.g., size and surface charge), which can be conditioned to exert control over protein encapsulation efficiency and subsequent release profile. The weakness of the chitosan nanoparticle system lies typically with difficulties in controlling initial burst effect in releasing large quantities of protein molecules. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. We investigated how the relative direction of limb movements in external space (iso- and non-isodirectionality), muscular constraints (the relative timing of homologous muscle activation) and the egocentric frame of reference (moving simultaneously toward/away the longitudinal axis of the body) contribute to the stability of coordinated movements. In the first experiment, we attempted to determine the respective stability of isodirectional and non-isodirectional movements in between-persons coordination. In a second experiment, we determined the effect of the relative direction in external space, and of muscular constraints, on pattern stability during a within-person bimanual coordination task. In the third experiment we dissociated the effects on pattern stability of the muscular constraints, relative direction and egocentric frame of reference. The results showed that (1) simultaneous activation of homologous muscles resulted in more stable performance than simultaneous activation of non-homologous muscles during within-subject coordination, and that (2) isodirectional movements were more stable than non-isodirectional movements during between-persons coordination, confirming the role of the relative direction of the moving limbs in the stability of bimanual coordination. Moreover, the egocentric constraint was to some extent found distinguishable from the effect of the relative direction of the moving limbs in external space, and from the effect of the relative timing of muscle activation. In summary, the present study showed that relative direction of the moving limbs in external space and muscular constraints may interact either to stabilize or destabilize coordination patterns.
