Vertically aligned ZnO nanowires (NWs) with a length of 1.5-10 mu m and a mean diameter of ca. 150 nm were grown by chemical vapour deposition onto a c-oriented ZnO seed layer which was deposited by atomic layer deposition on Si substrates. The substrates were then spin-coated with an ethanol solution containing Pd nanoparticles with an average size of 2.7 and 4.5 nm. A homogeneous distribution of the Pd nanoparticles on ZnO NWs has been obtained using both Pd particle series. The catalytic activity of the ZnO NWs and Pd/ZnO NWs catalysts was measured in the semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol at 303-343 K and a pressure of 2-10 bar. The effect of the solvent used on the catalytic performance of the Pd/ZnO NWs catalyst was studied. The Pd/ZnO catalysts showed alkene selectivity of up to 95% at an alkyne conversion of 99%. A kinetic model is proposed to explain the activity and selectivity of the ZnO support and Pd/ZnO catalysts.

The kinetics of the liquid-phase hydrogenation of citral (3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienal) on Au/TiO2 and Pt-Sn/TiO2 thin films was studied in the temperature range 313-353 K and citral concentrations of 0.25-10.0 mol m(-3). The thin films were deposited onto the inner walls of silica capillaries with internal diameter of 250 mu m. First-order dependence on hydrogen pressure and near zero order dependence on citral concentration were observed for the initial rate of citral hydrogenation over the Pt-Sn/TiO2 and Au/TiO2 thin films. The Au/TiO2 catalyst prevents citronellal formation. The highest yield of unsaturated alcohols was obtained on the Pt-Sn/TiO2 film at a reaction temperature of 343 K, liquid residence time of 30 min and a citral conversion of 99%. We present surface enhanced Raman optical activity (SEROA), as well as Raman, SERS and ROA, spectra of D- and L-ribose. By employing a gel forming polyacrylic acid to control colloid aggregation and associated birefringent artefacts we observe the first definitive proof of SEROA through measurement of mirror image bands for the two enantiomers.

Here we report an example of a mixed thiol monolayer on the surface of Ag nanoparticles which promotes adsorption and quantitative SERS detection of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, “Ecstasy”); the thiols in the mixed monolayers act synergistically since MDMA does not adsorb onto colloids modified with either of the thiols separately.

DNA sequences attached to Au nanoparticles via thiol linkers stand up from the surface, giving preferential enhancement of the adenine ring breathing SERS band. Non-specific binding via the nucleobases reorients the DNA, reducing this effect. This change in intensity on reorientation was utilised for label-free detection of hybridization of a molecular beacon.

Singles only: DNA sequences can be induced to spontaneously adsorb to the surfaces of Ag colloids through their nucleotide side chains (see picture). The SERS spectra of these nonspecifically bound strands are sufficiently reproducible that they can be used to identify single-base mismatches in short (25-mer and 23-mer) strands. Subtracting the spectra of different DNA sequences results in difference spectra that contain features corresponding to the exchanged nucleotides.

Antimicrobial peptides constitute a diverse class of naturally occurring antimicrobial molecules which have activity against a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. Antimicrobial peptides are exciting leads in the development of novel biocidal agents at a time when classical antibiotics are under intense pressure from emerging resistance, and the global industry in antibiotic research and development stagnates. This review will examine the potential of antimicrobial peptides, both natural and synthetic, as novel biocidal agents in the battle against multi-drug resistant pathogen infections.

A happy medium: Volumetric adsorption of carbon monoxide at 308 K and UHR-HAADF-STEM, HREM, and computer modeling techniques were compared. Experimental CO/Au ratios at saturation coverage for two supported gold catalysts were shown to fit very well the predictions of a nanostructural model that considers CO adsorption on gold sites with coordination numbers of less than eight.

Simple and powerful: The reaction kinetics at surfaces of heterogeneous catalysts is reformulated in terms of the involved chemical potentials. Based on this formulism, an approach of searching for good catalysts is proposed without recourse to extensive calculations of reaction barriers and detailed kinetic analyses. This edition of Milton’s Epistolarum Familiarium Liber Unus and of his Uncollected Letters, will appear as 672 pp. of The Complete Works of John Milton Volume XI, eds. Gordon Campbell and Edward Jones (Oxford University Press, forthcoming 2016). A diplomatic Latin text and a new facing English translation are complemented by a detailed Introduction and commentary that situate Milton’s Latin letters in relation to the classical, pedagogical and essentially humanist contexts at the heart of their composition. Now the art of epistolography advocated and exemplified by Cicero and Quintilian and embraced by Renaissance pedagogical manuals is read through a humanist filter whereby, via the precedent (and very title) of Epistolae Familiares, the Miltonic Liber is shown to engage with a neo-Latin re-invention of the classical epistola that had come to birth in quattrocento Italy in the letters of Petrarch and his contemporaries. At the same time the Epistolae are seen as offering fresh insight into Milton’s views on education, philology, his relations with Italian literati, his blindness, the poetic dimension of his Latin prose, and especially his verbal ingenuity as the ‘words’ of Latin ‘Letters’ become a self-conscious showcasing of etymological punning on the ‘letters’ of Latin ‘words’. The edition also announces several new discoveries, most notably its uncovering and collation of a manuscript of Henry Oldenburg’s transcription (in his Liber Epistolaris held in Royal Society, London) of Milton’s Ep. Fam. 25 (to Richard Jones). Oldenburg’s transcription (from the original sent to his pupil Jones) is an important find, given the loss of all but two of the manuscripts of Milton’s original Latin letters included in the 1674 volume. The edition also presents new evidence in regard to Milton’s relationships with the Italian philologist Benedetto Buonmattei, the Greek humanist Leonard Philaras, the radical pastor Jean Labadie (and the French church of London), and the elusive Peter Heimbach.

Dealuminated beta zeolites exchanged with Pd and Fe were prepared to investigate the influence of iron and dealumination on the activity and selectivity of Pd/BEA zeolite for toluene total oxidation. The specific areas determined by BET method and EPR studies allowed to know that the palladium would be more easily agglomerated on the BEA than on the DBEA. Moreover, a quantification of the palladium saturation on the BEA zeolite was deduced by EPR. Effects of dynamic and static oxidation and weak and strong reduction treatments were studied by EPR. Several isolated and interacted Pd+ species and hole centers were detected. The Pd was much reduced after the catalytic test in dealuminated and Fe doped samples. This result could be directly correlated to the catalytic deactivation. The deactivation could be also explain by the type of coke deposed on the catalyst and by the hydroscopic behavior of the samples. Addition of Fe or dealumination could prevent the deactivation and then lead to better catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Enantiopure arene cis-tetrahydrodiols of bromobenzene and iodobenzene have been obtained in good yields, from chemoselective hydrogenation (rhodium-graphite) of the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites. Palladium-catalysed substitution of the halogen, by hydrogen, boron, nitrogen and phosphorus nucleophiles, in the acetonide derivatives, has yielded highly functionalised products for application in synthesis with potential as scaffolds for chiral ligands.

The natural zeolite obtained from the Sivas-Yavu region in Turkey and iron modified forms were studied for the decomposition of N2O and selective catalytic reduction of N2O with NH3. The natural and iron modified zeolites were characterised by XRD, SEM, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD and low temperature nitrogen sorption. The effect iron loading, precursor and valency on the catalytic performance of catalysts were studied. The catalytic activity of the zeolites increased up to about 7.0 wt.% Fe. Above this value, the activity decreased as a result of a reduction in the surface area and pore volume of the zeolite. The highest catalytic activity was observed using catalysts prepared with FeCl2 due to the formation of more reducible iron species in the zeolites. When FeSO4 was used as the iron precursor, sulphate remained on the surface even after extensive washing resulting in a decrease in the N2O decomposition activity and a shift the N2O reduction temperature to higher values. Since the natural and iron exchanged natural zeolites prepared using FeCl2 have comparable activity with synthetic zeolites, the offer a promising alternative catalyst for the abatement of N2O, particularly for the selective reduction of N2O with NH3. The dimerisation of cyclooctene (COE) to 1,9-cyclohexadecadiene, a molecule of interest to the fragrance industry, has been achieved using ruthenium catalysts in organic solvents with significantly better selectivities (47-74%) and yields (39-60%) than previously reported (34% and 30%, respectively). Grubbs' first and second generation catalysts, the Hoveyda-Grubbs' catalyst and a phosphonium alkylidene catalyst were tested in a range of organic solvents and ionic liquids (ILs), including 1:1 IL/dichloromethane mixtures and biphasic IL + pentane systems. The best results (74% selectivity, 60% yield) were obtained using Grubbs' first generation catalyst in 1,2-dichloroethane. The formation of trimer, tetramer and other higher molecular mass products were found to be favoured at low catalyst loadings (0.77 mM). Studies of metathesis reactions using 1,9-cyclohexadecadiene as substrate indicated that the monomer-dimer and monomer-trimer reactions are faster than the dimer-dimer reaction. The use of IL media allowed for the recyclability of the catalyst, although a drop in the yield of dimer generally occurred after the first run. Heterogeneized catalysts, where the IL-catalyst system was immobilised onto silica, resulted in fast reactions leading to poor yields of dimer. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
