Herein, we present the formulation and the characterization of novel adiponitrile-based electrolytes as a function of the salt structure, concentration, and temperature for supercapacitor applications using activated carbon based electrode material. To drive this study two salts were selected, namely, the tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate and the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide. Prior to determination of their electrochemical performance, formulated electrolytes were first characterized to quantify their thermal, volumetric, and transport properties as a function of temperature and composition. Then, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques were used to investigate their electrochemical properties as electrolyte for supercapacitor applications in comparison with those reported for the currently used model electrolyte based on the dissolution of 1 mol·dm–3 of tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate in acetonitrile. Surprisingly, excellent electrochemical performances were observed by testing adiponitrile-based electrolytes, especially those containing the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide room-temperature molten salt. Differences observed on electrochemical performances between the selected adiponitrile electrolytes based on high-temperature (tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate) and the room-temperature (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide) molten salts are mainly driven by the salt solubility in adiponitrile, as well as by the charge and the structure of each involved species. Furthermore, in comparison with classical electrolytes, the selected adiponitrile +1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide solution exhibits almost similar specific capacitances and lower equivalent serial resistance. These results demonstrate in fact that the adiponitrile +1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide mixture can be used for the formulation of safer electrolytes presenting a very low vapor pressure even at high temperatures to design acetonitrile-free supercapacitor devices with comparable performances.

The voltammetry for the reduction of 2-nitrotoluene at a gold microdisk electrode is reported in two ionic liquids: trihexyltetradecylphosphonium tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate ([P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide ([Emim][NTf2]). The reduction of nitrocyclopentane (NCP) and 1-nitrobutane (BuN) was investigated using voltammetry at a gold microdisk electrode in the ionic liquid [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP]. Simulated voltammograms, generated through the use of ButlerVolmer theory and symmetric MarcusHush theory, were compared to experimental data, with both theories parametrizing the data similarly well. An experimental value for the Marcusian parameter, 1 was also determined in all cases. For the reduction of 2-nitrotoluene, this was 0.5 +/- 0.1 eV in both solvents, while for NCP and BuN in [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6][FAP], it was 2 +/- 0.1 and 5 +/- 0.1 eV, respectively. This is attributed to the localization of charge on the nitro group and the primary nitro alkyls increased interaction with the environment, resulting in a larger reorganization energy.

To evaluate the effect of mass transfer limitations in the three-phase oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol carried out in toluene and an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide), studies have been performed in a rotating disc reactor and compared with those carried out in a stirred tank reactor where mass transfer effects are considered negligible. High catalyst efficiencies are found in the stirred tank reactor with the use of both ionic liquid and toluene, although there is a decrease in rate for the ionic liquid reactions. In contrast, internal pore diffusion limits the reaction in both solvents in the rotating disc reactor. This mass transfer resistance reduces the problem of overoxidation of the metal surface when the reaction is carried out in toluene, leading to significantly higher rates of reaction than expected, although at the cost of decreased selectivity.

The selective heterogeneous catalytic reduction of phenyl acetylene to styrene over palladium supported on calcium carbonate is reported in both an ionic liquid and a molecular solvent. By using a rotating disc reactor in conjunction with results from a stirred tank reactor it is possible, for the first time, to disentangle the mass transfer contributions in the ionic liquid system. For both heptane and 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, the reaction in the rotating disc reactor is dominated by reaction in the entrained film on the disc compared with very limited reaction in the bulk liquid. The lower reaction rate obtained in the ionic liquid compared with the organic solvent is shown to be due to the slow transport of the hydrogen dissolved in the liquid. It is clear from the results presented herein that, although the hydrodynamics of similar reactors used for biological treatment of wastewater are well understood, on using a more viscous fluid and higher rotation speeds necessary for fine chemical catalysis these simple relationships breakdown.

A simple method to predict the densities of a range of ionic liquids from their surface tensions, and vice versa, using a surface-tension-weighted molar volume, the parachor, is reported. The parachors of ionic liquids containing 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations were determined experimentally, but were also calculated directly from their structural compositions using existing parachor contribution data for neutral compounds. The calculated and experimentally determined parachors were remarkably similar, and the latter data were subsequently employed to predict the densities and surface tensions of the investigated ionic liquids. Using a similar approach, the molar refractions of ionic liquids were determined experimentally, as well as calculated using existing molar refraction contribution data for uncharged compounds. The calculated molar refraction data were employed to predict the refractive indices of the ionic liquids from their surface tensions. The errors involved in the refractive index predictions were much higher than the analogous predictions employing the parachor, but nevertheless demonstrated the potential for developing parachor and molar refraction contribution data for ions as tools to predict ionic liquid physical properties.

An electronically polarizable model has been developed for the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate (EMIM+/NO3-), Molecular dynamics simulation studies were then performed on both the polarizable and nonpolarizable versions of the model. Comparisons of shear viscosity and diffusion constants at 400 K show that the effects of polarizability are quite substantial and the polarizable model results are in better agreement with the experimental values.

The structure and dynamics of the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate is studied by molecular dynamics simulations. We find long-range spatial correlations between the ions and a three-dimensional local structure that reflects the asymmetry of the cations. The main contribution to the configurational energy comes from the electrostatic interactions which leads to charge-ordering effects. Radial screening and threedimensional distribution of charge are also analyzed. The motion of a single ion is studied via velocity and reorientational correlation functions. It is found that ions "rattle" in a long-lived cage, while the orientational structure relaxes on a time scale longer than 200 ps. As in a supercooled liquid, the mean square displacements reveal a subdiffusive dynamics. In addition, the presence of dynamic heterogeneities can be detected by analyzing the non-Gaussian behavior of the van Hove correlation function and the spatial arrangement of the most mobile ions. The short-time collective dynamics is also studied through the electric current time correlation function.

The extraction of both UO22+ and trivalent lanthanide and actinide ions (Am3+, Nd3+, Eu3+) by dialkylphosphoric or dialkylphosphinic acids from aqueous solutions into the ionic liquid, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide has been studied and compared to extractions into dodecane. Radiotracer partitioning measurements show comparable patterns of distribution ratios for both the ionic liquid/aqueous and dodecane/aqueous systems, and the limiting slopes at low acidity indicate the partitioning of neutral complexes in both solvent systems. The metal ion coordination environment, elucidated from EXAFS and UV-visible spectroscopy measurements, is equivalent in the ionic liquid and dodecane solutions with coordination of the uranyl cation by two hydrogen-bonded extractant dimers, and of the trivalent cations by three extractant dimers. This is the first definitive report of a system where both the biphasic extraction equilibria and metal coordination environment are the same in an ionic liquid and a molecular organic solvent.

Experimental density measurements are reported, and the derived thermodynamic properties, such as the isothermal compressibility, the isobaric expansivity, and the thermal pressure coefficient are presented as Supporting Information for several imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C2mim][NTf2], 1-heptyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C7mim][NTf2], 1-octyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C8mim][NTf2], 1-ethyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate [C2mim][BF4], and 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tricyanomethane [C4mim][C(CN)3] in the pressure (0.10 <p/MPa <30.00) and temperature (293.15 <T/K <393.15) domains. These ILs were chosen to provide an understanding of the influence of the cation alkyl chain length and the anion influence on the properties under study. Experimental densities are correlated with the Tait equation with an average absolute deviation (AAD) less than 0.04 %. Experimental densities are in good agreement with the densities obtained by some recent predictive methods proposed in the literature.

The oxidation of hydrogen was studied at an activated platinum micro-electrode by cyclic voltammetry in the following ionic liquids: [C(2)mim][NTf2], [C(4)mim][NTf2], [N-6.2.2.2][NTf2], [P-14.6.6.6][NTf2], [C(4)mim][OTf], [C(4)mim][BF4] [C(4)mim][PF6], [C(4)mim][NO3], [C(6)mim]Cl and [C(6)mim][FAP] (where [C(n)mim](+) = 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium, [N-6,N-2,N-2,N-2](+) = n-hexyltriethylammonium, [P-14,P-6,P-6,P-6](+) = tris(n-hexyltetradecyl) phosphonium, [NTf2](-) = bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide, [OTf] = trifluoromethlysulfonate and [FAP](-) = tris(perfluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate). Activation of the Pt electrode was necessary to obtain reliable and reproducible voltammetry. After activation of the electrode, the H-2 oxidation waves were nearly electrochemically and chemically reversible in [C(n)mim][NTf2] ionic liquids, chemically irreversible in [C(6)mim]Cl and [C(4)mim][NO3], and showed intermediate characteristics in OTf-, [BF4](-), [PF6](-), [FAP](-) and other [NTf2](-)-based ionic liquids. These differences reflect the contrasting interactions of protons with the respective RTIL anions. The oxidation peaks are reported relative to the half-wave potential of the cobaltocenium/cobaltocene redox couple in all ionic liquids studied, giving an indication of the relative proton interactions of each ionic liquid. A preliminary temperature study (ca. 298-333 K) has also been carried out in some of the ionic liquids. Diffusion coefficients and solubilities of hydrogen at 298 K were obtained from potential-step chronoamperometry, and there was no relationship found between the diffusion coefficients and solvent viscosity. RTILs possessing [NTf2](-) and [FAP](-) anions showed the highest micro-electrode peak currents for the oxidation in H-2 saturated solutions, with[C(4)mim][NTf2] toeing the most sensitive. The large number of available RTIL anion/cation pairs allows scope for the possible electrochemical detection of hydrogen gas for use in gas sensor technology. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. We report the anodic oxidation of several arenes and anthracenes within room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). In particular, the heterogeneous electron-transfer rates (k(0)) for substituted anthracenes and arenes are also investigated in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) and found not to obey the outer-sphere Marcus-type behavior of these compounds in contrast to the behavior in traditional organic solvents,in particular the predictions for k(0) with molecular size and solvent static dielectric constant. To obtain the electron-transfer rate for 9-phenylanthracene, the dimerization and heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics of its electrogenerated radical cations is studied in [C(2)mim][NTf2] and eight other RTILs and are both found to be largely independent of the solution viscosity.

Imidazolium-tagged bis(oxazolines) have been prepared and used as chiral ligands in the copper(II)-catalysed Diels-Alder reaction of N-acryloyl- and N-crotonoyloxazolidinones with cyclopentadiene and 1,3-cyclohexadiene in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide, [emim][NTf2]. A significant and substantial enhancement in the rate and enantioselectivity was achieved in [emim][NTf2] compared with dichloromethane. For example, complete conversion and enantioselectivities up to 95 % were obtained for the reaction between N-acryloyloxazolidinone and cyclopentadiene within 2 min in [emim][NTf2] whereas the corresponding reaction in dichloromethane required 60 min to reach completion and gave an ee of only 16 %. The enhanced rates obtained in the ionic liquid enabled a catalyst loading as low as 0.5 mol % to give complete conversion within 2 min while retaining the same level of enantioselectivity. The imidazolium-tagged catalysts can be recycled ten times without any loss in activity or enantioselectivity and showed much higher affinity for the ionic liquid phase during the recycle procedure than the analogous uncharged ligand.

The five room temperature ionic liquids: 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([CnMIM][N(Tf)(2)], n = 2, 4, 8, 10) and n-hexyltriethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([N-6222][N(Tf)(2)]) were investigated as solvents in which to study the electrochemical oxidation of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-para-phenylenediamine (TMPD) and N,N,N',N'-tetrabutyl-paraphenylenediamine (TBPD), using 20 mul micro-samples under vacuum conditions. The effect of dissolved atmospheric gases on the accessible electrochemical window was probed and determined to be less significant than seen previously for ionic liquids containing alternative anions. Chronoamperometric transients recorded at a microdisk electrode were analysed via a process of non-linear curve fitting to yield values for the diffusion coefficients of the electroactive species without requiring a knowledge of their initial concentration. Comparison of experimental and simulated cyclic voltammetry was then employed to corroborate these results and allow diffusion coefficients for the electrogenerated species to be estimated. The diffusion coefficients obtained for the neutral compounds in the five ionic liquids via this analysis were, in units of 10(-11) m(2) s(-1), 2.62, 1.87, 1.12, 1.13 and 0.70 for TMPD. and 1.23, 0.80, 0.40, 0.52 and 0.24 for TBPD (listed using the same order for the ionic liquids as stated above). The most significant consequence of changing the cationic component of the ionic liquid was found to be its effect on the solvent viscosity; the diffusion coefficient of each species was found to be approximately inversely proportional to viscosity across the series of ionic liquids, in accordance with Walden's rule.
