This short communication presents a research update of a new low nickel maraging steel, Fe–12.94%Ni–1.61%Al–1.01%Mo–0.23%Nb (wt%). Its yield stress and the tensile strength are 1080 MPa and 1180 MPa, respectively, after ageing treatment. Tensile specimens show ductile fracture. Fractography demonstrated deep dimples. Impact energy is 22 J on half-size specimens.

The mechanical behavior of microfibrilar composites (MFC), consisting of a matrix of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and reinforcement of polyamide 6 (PA6) fibrils, with and without compatibilization, was studied. The composites were produced by conventional processing techniques with various shape and arrangement of the PA6 reinforcing entities: long, unidirectional, or crossed bundles of fibrils (UDP and CPC, respectively), middle-length, randomly oriented bristles (MRB), or non-oriented micrometric PA6 spheres (NOM). The tensile, flexural, and impact properties of the MFC materials (UDP, CPC, and MRB) were determined as a function of the PA6 reinforcement shape, alignment and content, and compared with those of NOM, the non-fibrous composite. It was concluded that the in-situ MFC materials based on HDPE/PA6 blends display improvements in the mechanical behavior when compared with the neat HDPE matrix, e.g., up to 33% for the Young modulus, up to 119% for the ultimate tensile strength, and up to 80% for the flexural stiffness. The interaction between the face coat material of a mould and the titanium alloy will cause oxygen penetration during the casting and solidification process, resulting in the formation of an α-case interaction layer at the metal surface that influences the mechanical properties of the cast components. In this study, the influence of α-case thickness and loading positions in a Ti–6Al–4V (Ti64) alloy on metal hardness, impact properties and bending strength was investigated. The results showed that the metal surface α-case consisted of many coarse α laths which has a higher hardness than metal matrix. The mechanical properties of the alloy are influenced by the α-case. The alloy bending strength was observed to have changed linearly with the thickness of sample.

Various grades of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) supplied by Bayer were studied to determine their suitability for the rotational moulding process. Following grinding, parts were produced using a variety of peak internal air temperatures and cooling rates. The tensile and impact properties of these parts were then analysed and it was found that both the grade and moulding conditions had a large bearing on the quality and mechanical strength of the part produced.

Natural fibers can be used in rotational molding process to obtain parts with improved mechanical properties. Different approaches have been followed in order to produce formulations containing banana or abaca fiber at 5% weight, in two- and three-layer constructions. Chemically treated abaca fiber has also been studied, causing some problems in processability. Fibers used have been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), optical microscopy, and single-fiber mechanical tests. Rotomolded parts have been tested for tensile, flexural, and impact properties, demonstrating that important increases in elastic modulus are achieved with these fibers, although impact properties are reduced. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

Rotational molding suffers from a relatively long cycle time, which hampers more widespread growth of the process. During each cycle, both the polymer and mold must be heated from room temperature to above polymer melting temperature and subsequently cooled to room temperature. The cooling time in this process is relatively long due to the poor thermal conductivity of plastics. Although rapid external cooling is possible, internal cooling rates are the major limitation. This causes the process to be uneconomical for large production runs of small parts. Various researchers have strived to minimize cycle times by applying various internal cooling procedures. This article presents a review of these methods, including computer simulations and practical investigations published to date. The effects of cooling rate on the morphology, shrinkage, warpage, and impact properties of rotationally molded polyolefins are also highlighted. In general, rapid and symmetrical cooling across the mold results in smaller spherulite size, increased mechanical properties and less potential warpage or distortion in moldings. POLYM. ENG. This paper presents the results from investigations into the differences in the rotational moulding and mechanical properties between pigmented polyethylene powder and micropellets. Both high shear and low shear pigment blending methods were examined, as were a range of pigment addition levels. This was followed by a series of mechanical and analytical tests on the rotomoulded articles to determine properties. Whilst micropellets tended to produce a different surface porosity than powder, few bubbles were evident within the wall thickness for both high shear and low shear blending. For high shear blending, with pigment addition levels up to 0.05%, similar impact properties were noticed for both powder and micropellets. Low shear blending resulted in more inconsistent impact values. There were also more visual inconsistencies in articles produced from powder.

A series of thin films comprising gold nanorods embedded in an alumina matrix have been fabricated with lengths ranging from 75 to 330 nm. Their optical properties, expressed in terms of extinction - In(T), where T is optical transmittance, have been measured as a function of wavelength, rod length, angle of incidence, and incident polarization state. The results are compared to a Maxwell-Garnett based theory modified to take into account the strongly anisotropic nature of the medium. Transverse and longitudinal plasmon resonances are observed. The interaction between the nanorods leads to the splitting of the longitudinal resonance with the longer-wavelength resonance being forbidden for direct optical observations. The shorter-wavelength resonance related to the symmetric coupling between longitudinal plasma excitations in the nanorods depends on rod length, polarization state, and angle of incidence of the probing light. The impact of electron confinement on the optical properties of the gold rods is also seen and may be incorporated into the Maxwell-Garnett theory by restricting the mean free path of the conduction electrons to produce excellent agreement between observations and the complete theory. Annealing experiments that modify the physical structure of the gold confirm this conclusion.
